Diabolo Rail Project,
Brussels Airport,
Belgium
Brussels Airport
New high‐speed
railway line from
Brussels to Antwerp
South connection
to Brussels
Evacuation tunnel
North connection
to Antwerp
To encourage the future development of Brussels-
Zaventem as a business location, two infrastructure
projects have been initiated to enable
access to Zaventem international airport from the
north. This will add to the airport' s attractiveness
for passenger and goods traffic.
On the one hand, the Diabolo Rail Project
comprises the conversion of the existing dead-end
station at Zaventem international airport into a
through station and its connection to the new
high-speed railway line from Brussels to Antwerp,
which will be built in between the dual
carriageways of the E19 motorway.
Evacuation
shaft
Bored tunnels
On the other hand, the accessibility of Brucargo
freight airport will be improved by the
construction of additional entrance and slip roads
for the Cargo motorway bridge and the
construction of a new cyclist bridge, and a fly-over
enabling direct access to the Cargo area.
The core of the Diabolo Rail Project are two
machine-driven tunnels, each approx. 1,070 m in
length, driven under aircraft parking stands, the
most important runway of the airport and some
taxiways. A slurry-supported Mixshield TBM was
used to bore these two tunnels.
