You will have more fun and excitement than you have ever experienced in any other type of shooting competition! Have you gone to a local USPSA match and seen people shooting incredibly fast and accurately? If you were like us, you probably felt a little intimidated, but deep down inside you would love to be able to do the same thing, and maybe even beat them. You know you can—it just takes dedication, practice, hard work, practice, forgetting about everything else in your life (just kidding, maybe), practice, a little bit of luck, and /ots of practice. Once you've decided to accept the big challenge and try your first match, you'll be hooked. The first big decision you will face is whether to shoot in Limited or Open category. Either choice is the right one, so don't be afraid of making the wrong decision. If Limited category were equated with stock car racing, then Open category would be the Indy 500. The difference between competing in Limited or Open is the gun you use. Basically, the same holsters, magazines (for the most part), belts, mag pouches, and the like can be used for either category. Most new shooters prefer to start in Limited with whatever firearm they have handy. It could be a revolver, any of the high capacity 9mm's, or a revered Government Model .45. Initially, you simply need a pistol that you are comfortable shooting, a holster, belt, mag pouches, and eye and ear protection. You will probably want four magazines IN THE BEGINNINTG that you have tested in your pistol and can trust to work reliably. Add 100 rounds of ammunition, and you should be ready for your first match. Go to the range early, talk to the match director, and listen to some of the other competitors. They have a wealth of 'Knowledge they will share with you. Everyone wants new shooters to enjoy their first few matches so that they will want to come back and, hopefully, relay to their gun-enthusiast friends what a wonderful sport IPSC really is. It's the only way our great sport can continue to grow. In future issues, some of the topics we will discuss will be Limited vs. Open competition and the equipment needed for each, ammunition and components, good practice drills, and tips about how to prepare for your first major competition. By the way, let us introduce ourselves. Merle is the 1994 USPSA Open National Champion and has finished in the top five at the last two USPSA Limited Nationals. He is also a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit.
