A week or so before the Autumn Classic, I got
a call from Chepit Dulay who was wondering if
I would be attending the Asian Championship
held in the Philippines. Apparently my invitation
was still floating somewhere in the Pacific Ocean
because I had no clue whatsoever about the
match. Since I'd have to change all my equipment
around to comply with international IPSC
rules for Limited Class and I'd have to leave on
the Sunday the Autumn Classic concluded, I figured
why not! I've always wanted to check out
the Philippines anyway. After some quick arrangements
with Chepit getting the proper permits
faxed, I was ready to head East—or head
West to get to the East.
While I was waiting for my bags at the airport
in Cebu, I was met by a local guy who introduced
himself as Troy and said he was shooting the
match also. Being the observant type, I quickly
spotted the "Customs Official" name tag on his
shirt and breathed a huge sigh of relief. As anyone
who has traveled internationally with guns
knows, customs can be a nightmare. Troy, my-
self, and three shooters from Hong Kong breezed
through customs and checked into our hotel,
about a half-mile from the range. After settling
in, our hosts rounded us up and took us down the
road for lunch. We walked around checking out
several different fish markets, picked out the fish
and shellfish we wanted, and took them to another
place that cooked them for us. That is the
way to eat seafood! You can't get seafood fixed
like that in the States. It was awesome! I knew
this was going to be a good trip, especially for a
man who doesn't like to miss a meal.
I spent the next day getting used to the place
and checking out the range. The range was
unique in that it was a huge, and I do mean
huge, hole in the ground with one road leading
down into it. I later learned that the hole was
made by excavating dirt to build up the ground
for the airport. The club then leased the "hole"
from the state and turned it into a great range.
The next morning, we got down to business. I
was squadded to shoot with the "Ozzies," Craig
Ginger, Errol Thomas, Ross Newell, and Ken
Carter. Those heavy hitters from down-under
were squadded with the top guns from the Philippines,
including the Jet, Jomini Abaya, Marvin
Sanchez, and quite a few more speedy homeboys.
The Jet caught up with us after lunch; his plane
had landed from the States only that morning!
Whew! I'm not quite that hard-core of an international
traveler.
It was a difficult match with challenging stages
and plenty of droppers, swingers, and partial targets
to keep you honest. The courses were sort of
a combination of "American" and "Internationar
stages, American in that the round count was
high for the number of stages, and International
in that there were more shooting "areas" instead
of boxes providing more lateral gun movernent
from each position.
The battle shaped up with Errol and Craig
starting out strong and with the Jet and Jomini
right in there. Errol shot well in a really tough
match, making no mistakes of any consequence.
The Jet dropped a shot on one of the longer field
courses, which ended up being a factor since he
finished second overall by about 10 match points.
After the match I overheard Errol say that he
dropped only 29 points in the entire match!
That's impressive. At today's pace it's not often
you see a "no-mistakes" win. Congratulations to
Errol.
