POCKET PRO TIMER
FROM COMPETITION ELECTRONICS
Ron Bailey presented me with
one of his new, small timers
and let me give it the acid test.
Built to sell for about a hundred
bucks, the Pocket Pro timer is
a great little machine. It measures
only 3 by 4-1/4 inches and
is about 1-1/2 inches thick. I
think it's going to be one of my
favorites.
My first 'personal' favorite
was a Pro Timer II, also from
Competition Electronics. It was
simple to operate, yet complete
enough to do everything I
needed. I had to quit using it,
not because it failed, but because
a friend unknowingly
changed out the rechargeable
battery which is now unavailable.
The new Pocket Pro uses
standard 9 volt batteries and
incorporates an automatic
power off feature when it hasn't
been used for a while. This is
not an uncommon feature, but
is certainly welcome. Even after
it turns off it still remembers
the last shot string and any par
times you've set. Another obvious
improvement over the Pro
Timer II is the size of the display.
I guess Ron figured I
needed a larger display to go
with my older eyes. The Pocket
Pro has the same deep start
tone that can be easily heard by
people with bad ears.
This timer is simple to operate.
You turn the power on by
pressing a button, and when
the shooter is ready, just press
the start button on the side.
That's the basic method of operation
and probably the way
you'll use the timer 98 percent
of the time, but it has more advanced
features as well.
A slide switch gives you the
option of instant or random delayed
start. With random delay
selected, the timer will sound
between three and five seconds
after the start button is
pressed. Other buttons let you
set par times or review each
shot of the shooter's string. If
you have a stage with a stop
plate you can connect the timer
to a normally closed switch to
stop the time when the plate is
knocked down. I've also used vibration
switches Telcroed' to
the back of a steel IPSC target
to detect hits with .22 rimfire,
but that's another game.
I think you'll like the Pocket
Pro. From it's sturdy clip to the
compact size to the back-to-basics
operation, its a gem. Give
