ORGANIZATION
The conservation of marine life and the sustainable use of living resources in
the North-East Atlantic Ocean are the main objectives of technicians and
researchers of the University of the Azores IMAR Centre (IMAR-DOP/UAç).
Those objectives are chaired with the news generations of young students and
newly graduated researchers in marine sciences that integrate IMAR-DOP/UAç.
The Northeast Atlantic, and in particular the Azores Region, is an area of
international interest for oceanographic, fisheries and biodiversity studies. The
members of IMAR-DOP/UAç have been involved with development of different
activities within these fields, in a multidisciplinary effort to conjugate this
knowledge into a better understanding of the dynamics of this region, and its
biological, physical, chemical and geological relation with other oceanic regions
of the world.
There is an effort by all IMAR-DOP/UAç members to emphasize the national
and international recognition of Azores University in oceanic studies. With this
objective in mind several protocols and partnerships were signed with others
institutions dedicated to marine science research. All IMAR network is part of an
effort of opening horizons, framing research activities in larger partnerships. This
is emphasizing with the presence of 35 invited scientists that visit IMAR-
DOP/UAç and have worked here during 2001, in projects like VENTOX, MAROV
and GEMAS.
The IMAR/DOP team starts to grow during 2001, when the first Post-docs
from the 10 that will arrive until 2002 summer, start their studies within the IMAR-
DOP/UAç team. Those 10 new members of IMAR-DOP/UAç came from different
places in the world (UK, Holland, Italy, France, India and Romania) they will
improve the actual studies (genetics, ethology, and oceanography) and open
new areas (bio-statistics).
The University of the Azores IMAR Centre has at its service R/V “Arquipélago”
and other three small boats like L/V “Águas-Vivas”. Those platforms are an
advantage in the organization of annual cruises and other teamwork. The centre
localization, near Horta Harbour and, consequently, easy access to the ocean, is
also an advantage in oceanic studies.
In fact the research vessel, the biological, chemical and oceanographic
equipment, and local environmental data (hydrologic, biologic and from fisheries)
can be easily acquired for the validation and incorporation in models. These
capacities were improved with the acquisition of new equipment, the highresolution
satellite reception antenna (HRPT). This satellite receives data on sea
surface temperature (SST - NOAA) and ocean colour (SeaWiFS). This
improvement is more significant with the implementation of a new international
laboratory for the study of hydrothermal vents – LabHorta, in last June.
This centre supports and helps pure and applied research. It is highly involved
in co-operation activities with public and private institutions from Portugal and
other countries, including universities, research centres and institutes,
enterprises and professional associations. Since the end of November IMAR-
DOP/UAç is one of the partners, together with ISR Lx; EI - IST; IMAR-DOP/UAç
and CREMINER-FFCL, of Associated Lab of the Ministry of Science and
Technology. We also carry out services for industry and public administration. It
is maintained an effort for the promotion and divulgation of his research activities
in mass media (national and international newspapers, radios and televisions
stations), in museums, in school system and by internet (IMAR/DOP homepage:
www.horta.uac.pt, IntraDOP: www.horta.uac.pt/intradop, and Fórum Oceanos:
www.pg.raa.pt/oceanos).
In this ambit we give special attention to studies about:
• Biology and Ecology of fisheries resources.
• Oceanic trophic relationships.
• Dynamic and management of marine resources (tuna fishes and similar,
demersal resources, sharks, small pelagic, crustaceans and littoral resources).
• Fisheries experiments (search for new resources and fisheries techniques).
• Biology and genetics of oceanic squids.
• Biology, ecology and dynamics of species associated with seamounts.
• General ecology and behaviour of littoral communities of fishes and
invertebrates.
• Community ecology of marine birds.
• Physic and biologic oceanography (oceanic circulation and dynamic, remote
sensing, physic-biologic inter-actions on the Azores region).
• Eco-toxicology of heavy metal in the ocean.
• Oceanic hydrothermal vents ecology.
• Cetacean ecology, mainly related with whale watching activities.
The research activities are part of European programs (FWP5, Mast III, LIFE,
DG-XIV), national programs (FCT, PRAXIS, PDCTM), regional programs
(PRADIC) and bilateral co-operation with the USA (FLAD, NASA, NSF and
CoML).
LIST OF RESEARCH PROJECTS IN COURSE, STARTED AND/OR APROVED IN
2001
European funding
FIEFA - Providing a Framework to Improve the Assessment of the Main
Demersal and Pelagic Fisheries in Western European Waters
EU Study Contract 97-0059
The main objectives of this project are to implement a well designed and
integrated international sampling, data management and data analysis scheme
for the most important commercially exploited stocks in ICES Sub-areas VI, VII,
VIII, IX and X, with a view to improving the quality of data available for stock
assessment and management. The proposal will build on the progress achieved
in EU Study Contract 94-0013 (Improvements of data collection for stock
assessment in ICES Sub-areas VI, VII, VIII, IX and X). The project will enable the
partners and the EU, plan for the next phase of the CFP in 2002 by improving the
fisheries database in the member countries so that, the quality of data, the ability
to exchange data and the ability to consider fisheries rather than individual stocks
will be enhanced.
BASBLACK - Environment and biology of deep-water species Aphanopus carbo
in the NE Atlantic: basis for its management.
EC DG-XIV Study Project 97/0084
The objective of this project will be to provide the basis for the development
and implementation of a programme for the routine study and management of
the black scabbardfish. Owing to the lack of biological and environmental
information critical for the assessment and management of the species a special
effort will be put into investigations of its biology, stock discrimination and habitat
characterization.
MARÉ - Integrated Management of Coastal and Marine Areas in the Azores
EU – LIFE DG XI/ B4-3200-98-509.
The Azores archipelago consists of 9 islands and 20 islets located on the Mid-
Atlantic Ridge. Despite this geographical isolation, the marine environment has
been affected by increasing human activity. As a consequence of the ecological
deterioration during the last two decades, various isolated legislative measures
4

have been taken for the conservation of marine species and habitats. However,
they generally resulted in absence of management of the activities that take
place in the protected areas and/or deficient enforcement of the legislation. With
the recent application of the EC "Birds" and "Habitats" Directives in the
Archipelago, conservation benefited from a new strategic perspective by the
designation of 18 Sites with Conservation Importance (SCIs) and 13 Special
Protection Areas (SPAs) on coastal and marine habitats. With a view to prevent
what has happened with previous scattered measures, it is becoming urgent to
implement an integrated program of management planning and an enforcement
of the measures taken. The success of these strategies will depend on the
integration in terms of ecology and management of the different components of
the littoral environment.
Instead of advancing with isolated actions of a group or a particular species,
the present project proposes to elaborate and implement management plans for
a complex of areas and species that are already favoured by decrees of
unconnected protection. Three different levels of approach will be integrated:
littoral habitats, marine bird populations and populations of cetaceans and marine
turtles.
This project will follow a course of action that includes scientific inventory,
elaboration of regulation plans, public inquiry, preparation of management plans
and finally the implementation of specific management measures. In the course
of these actions one will establish an earnest program of environmental
education with the perspective of alerting the different sectors of society and their
active involvement in management measures. Only through this strategy will it be
possible to create favourable conditions to implement successfully the Network
Natura 2000 in the Azores with an impact beyond the project. Concerning coastal
(both littoral and sublittoral) habitats, 5 SCIs were chosen, inserted in different
ecological and socio-economical contexts. The island of Corvo, especially,
should represent an illustrative example for the development of the general
objectives of the project. Being the smallest island of the archipelago, Corvo
exhibits a well-preserved coastal environment and contains a small population,
receptive to proposals on environmental conservation. Therefore, it seems to
unite all conditions for a sustainable management plan. On the other hand, SCIs
located on the channel between Faial and Pico islands are subject to strong
pressure from tourism, fishing and urban activities. Consequently, the
management needed has to be of a different type, involving a greater variety of
socio-economic sectors. Finally, the islets of Formigas and the Dollabarat reef
represent the setting for a third management model. At present they are subject
to growing human disturbance, like demersal fishery and spearfishing, but the
area has the potential to be made into an authentic oceanic sanctuary.
Another goal for this project is the elaboration of management plans for the new
SPAs, which will be designated during a review process underway, along with
enhancement of conservation action in 7 existing SPAs towards the recovery of
population levels of Sterna dougallii. Besides, genetic studies will be undertaken
to confirm reproductive isolation between two sympatric and temporally
segregated populations of Oceanodroma castro occurring in the Azores. The
5

esults of this study will convey a revision of the taxonomic status of this species
listed in Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, which is expected to result in the
recognition of two distinct species with an increased vulnerable status, requiring
immediate conservation measures.
Regarding cetaceans, a database of the present populations of the different
species will be compiled and the consequence of the increasing touristic
pressure due to whale watching for the populations will be monitored. This is a
recent activity in the Azores, but a large expansion is expected since it is the
region in the North Atlantic with the highest diversity of cetaceans. A special
importance is given to the resident groups of Tursiops truncatus (species
included in Annex II of the EC Habitats Directive). The data collected will be used
in calculating the capacity load for the whale watching and in elaborating and
implementing a complex of management measures, which could lead to the
proposal of new protection areas.
Concerning marine turtles, the present project will seek to supervise tagging,
access the impacts of accidental capture of turtles by the fishing fleet and study
the distribution of the populations. The results of these studies will help in
adopting practical measures for protecting the different species of turtles,
especially the loggerhead (Caretta caretta), a priority species of the “Habitats
Directive”, which has its nursery ground around the Azores on its migratory route
in the North Atlantic.
VENTOX – Deep-Sea hydrothermal vents: a natural pollution laboratory.
UE – EVK3-CT1999-00003
The VENTOX project is intended to underpin this important European
endeavour by providing innovative insights into the long-term (i.e. evolutionary)
adaptations of a unique group of organisms, the deep-sea hydrothermal fauna
(and associated microbes), which are unique amongst life on earth in having
been exposed to high levels of environmental contamination (low pH, high CO 2,
poisonous sulphides, heavy metals and hazardous radionuclides) throughout
their evolutionary history. Furthermore, vent species have shallow-water
relatives that are important both in terms of biodiversity (community structure)
and commercial exploitation (e.g. shellfish). The evolutionary adaptations and
responses of vent species to their highly toxic and hostile environment are
therefore extremely relevant to our understanding of the short and long-term
consequences of contaminant exposure in shallow-water marine ecosystems.
The contaminant history of the deep-sea vent fauna extends back to at least the
Mesozoic (further in the case of vent bacteria); by comparison, anthropogenic
pollution is only a very recent phenomenon (covering the past 100 years).
Without such a long-term, evolutionary perspective on contaminant impact in
marine ecosystems, it is not possible to consider the development of truly viable
long-term management strategies.
The primary objective of this RTD proposal is to carry out innovative research
into the specialised adaptations and processes found in representatives of the
6

mid-Atlantic deep-sea hydrothermal vent fauna and the associated vent microbial
populations, with an emphasis on those aspects (environmental, community,
population, whole organism, physiological, genetic, biochemical and molecular)
which enable them to survive under extreme chemical and physical conditions in
an environment which provides a useful analogue of contaminated marine
environments elsewhere, with the notable difference that the time scale of
contamination is geological, thus having deep-seated evolutionary implications,
rather than very recent, as is the case of anthropogenic pollution. While the
fundamental aim is to bring forward the state of the art in this specific research
area, an important secondary objective is to generate results and material, which
are relevant to SME-based exploitation.
The setting up of a land-based laboratory at a research centre within the
Azores archipelago, within close proximity to active deep-sea vent sites, which
are able to be kept supplied with live animals from acoustically-retrievable cages,
is a major conceptual and technical breakthrough in both vent and deep-sea
research in general, particularly when combined, as is the case here, with the
use of the extremely innovative IPOCAMP pressure vessel. Taken together
these technological advances promise to significantly bring forward the state of
the art relating to both the fundamental and applied aspects of vent research
leading, hopefully, to discoveries of human benefit.
SAMFISH – Improving Sampling of Western and Southern European Atlantic
Fisheries.
UE – DG XIV / DGXIV-99-009
The main objectives of this project are to maintain and strengthen
international sampling of fisheries, data management and data analyses for the
most important commercially exploited stocks in Western and Southern
European waters (ICES Sub Areas VI, VII, VIII, IX and X), with a view to
improving the quality and exchange of data for stock assessment and
management.
The five main objectives of the project are:
1. To provide an integrated sampling program for the commercial exploited
stocks which are assessed by ICES and subject to annual TACs (category 1
stocks) in order to support the assessment of the stocks for ICES WG.
2. To enhance the information on stocks not currently assessed (category 2
stocks).
3. To identify, describe and identify the uncertainties in the estimate of numbers
at age and length for category 1 stocks and category 2 stocks where possible.
4. To improve data management.
5. To improve communication between research and the industry.
DELASS – Development of Elasmobranch assessments.
UE – CFP – Study DELASS-CT99-055
DELASS, Development of Elasmobranch Assessments is an international
research project in which 15 European research institutes and 2 sub-contractors
participate. The duration of the project is three years (2000 - 2002). The main
objective of DELASS is the improvement of the scientific basis for the
management of fisheries taking elasmobranches species. By the end of the
contract period DELASS should provide assessments of 7 species of North East
Atlantic sharks and 2 rays species.
National funding
CORRAM - Octopod cephalopods: relation of the resources with marine
environment.
FCT - PRAXIS XXI / 2-2.1-MAR-17071-95
This project aims to obtain basic biological information on commercial
cephalopods from Portuguese coast, mainly on common-octopus, that
represents the 2nd and 3rd most important species in economic value in the
national fisheries. The core of the project, common to all participants, concerns in
collecting simultaneously biological data (fisheries, reproduction, growth, feeding)
on the common- octopus in different geographic areas from mainland Portugal
(Viana do Castelo, Cascais e Tavira), Azores and Madeira, at least during an
year, based in monthly samplings. At same time, each of the participants will
conduct research in other subjects as experimental fishing, suitability of
assessment models to cephalopod resources, population genetics, physiology,
eco-toxicology, abundance and distribution studies in relation with environmental
factors. In the end of the project it is expected to have biological information that
could contribute for a better management of the national cephalopod resources.
Trophic ecology and population structure of juvenile, pelagic stage loggerhead
sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the North Atlantic Ocean.
FCT - PRAXIS XXI / P-BIA-11310-1998
The project aims at increasing our knowledge on the little known biology of
pelagic stage loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). These sea turtles provide
a1 st model organism to establish a research group and national and international
network capable of studying the ecology and autecology of pelagic open ocean
organisms.
Research at Madeira and Azores focuses around the evolutionary reasons for
the existence of a pelagic life history phase for turtles. Given the unpredictability
in space and time of food resources in the open ocean, it is strange that
loggerhead sea turtles should use these areas as developmental habitat to cover
increased energetic demands for their growth. The intention is to address this
question through an "optimal foraging-energetic budget" approach, that will
8

measure food availability in the field given the turtles actual behaviour and
compare it to physiological demands. The present proposal is inserted in this
long term strategy.
Here and as a 1 st step we propose to study in more detail the diet of pelagic
sea turtles and determine their trophic status through the analysis of stable
isotope ratios of nitrogen and carbon. With this information we will then conduct
feeding trials to help understand the digestive and nutritional ecology of these
turtles. To start to understand population composition and dynamics in the
pelagic environment we propose furthermore to determine its composition in
regard to sex and age. Last we pretend to explore the idea of using sea turtles as
monitors of anthropogenic contaminants by analysing various pollutants from
their tissues. From a methodological point of view all aspects proposed here rely
on capture of sea turtles at sea and the extraction from these, in the leastharmful
way, of samples to obtain as much information as possible.
Ecology and conservation of the temporally segregated populations of the
madeiran storm petrel Oceanodroma castro breeding in the Azores.
PRAXIS/P/BIA/1319471998
The Madeiran storm petrel is a high pelagic seabird, breeding on remote
oceanic islands. It is highly vulnerable to ground predators and populations are
thought to have declined in recent times. Through much of its breeding range,
the Madeiran storm petrel occurs in two temporally discrete breeding
populations, one nesting in the summer months, the other breeding during the
winter. Recent work carried out by the Department of Oceanography and
Fisheries (Monteiro & Furness 1998) has suggested, on the basis of
morphological analysis, that the two temporally segregated forms breeding in the
Azores islands may be considered as distinct species, which heightens
conservation concern for the species complex. The current project aimed to
deepen our understanding of the ecology of both forms and to examine the use
of artifical nesting chambers as a conservation measure to increase both the size
of the breeding population and the reproductive success of nesting pairs. Nest
boxes were specially designed and equipped with electronic balances to
remotely record food delivery by adults to the nestlings. Further remote
monitoring devices recorded the visits of individual adults to the nests. A total of
149 nest boxes were installed and over the course of three breeding seasons
(summer 2000, winter 2000/2001 and summer 2001) eggs were laid in 63
artificial nest sites (12, 23 and 28 nests in each season respectively). Storm
petrels breeding in nest boxes were considerably more successful in producing
fledged chicks than petrels nesting in natural cavities, where eggs were easily
damaged, or the nest contents destroyed by larger petrel species enlarging the
nest chamber. The percentage increase in breeding success was 274%, 197%
and 361% in each season respectively. Given the low numbers of birds natural
sites (and estimate 100 pairs for the summer population and 200 pairs in the
winter), and their low breeding success, the increase production of fledged chicks
9

from nest boxes is highly important. The chicks fledged from nest boxes during
the summer of 2001 represent an equivalent reproductive output of 101 pairs
breeding in natural sites, and an effective doubling of the colony size.
For each population, data were obtained on the following parameters: adult
nest attendance; adult foraging success; energy expenditure of incubating birds
(weight loss method, Bolton 1996); incidence of egg-neglect; duration of
individual incubation shifts; duration of total incubation period; rate of food
delivery to the nestling; duration of nestling fasting periods; rate of chick growth
Life cycle of two migratory Anguilliform species - Anguilla anguilla (L.) and
Conger conger (L.) - in the North Atlantic
FCT – 2/2.1/MAR/1728/95
The main goal of this project is to contribute for a better understanding of the
biological cycles of the species Anguilla anguilla (L.) and the Conger conger (L.).
In relation to the first species we intend to its transatlantic migrations. Concerning
the second species we intend to study the relation between spawning region(s),
distribution, duration of larval phase, sexual differentiation, fecundity and growth.
MAROV - Mapping of Marine Habitats of the Azores using Robotic Ocean
Vehicles.
PDCTM/P/MAR/15249/1999
The key scientific result of the project is the generation of detailed maps of a
set of Sites of Community Importance (SCIs - EU Habitats Directive) in the
Azores, with the objective of deriving guidelines for their management. The
project will determine habitat attributes that significantly affect the distribution and
dynamics of harvested species. Special attention will be given to determining
valuable zones for fish reproduction (for example, groupers and trigger fish), and
monitoring fish community structure and abundance. The project is highly
multidisciplinary, displays a clear symbiosis between marine science and
technology, and implements the key components in the chain that gives support
to modern systems for marine habitat mapping: data acquisition, pre-processing,
and transmission, multi-scale data integration, and information processing and
dissemination.
Small pelagic fishes from Azores: Biology and Fisheries
FCT – 4.70.94/PRADIC-CT
In the past, the monitoring of the small pelagic fishery in the Region has been
sporadic, hence, this fishery is currently poorly described, the existing information
10

inadequately explored, and information on the biology of some species still very
limited. This project aims to fill in these information gaps by creating
simultaneous scientific bases, so that, in the future, a small group responsible for
the assessment and counselling concerning the management of this resource is
established at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries (DOP).
CRUSTAÇO - Experimental fishing of deep-sea crustaceans of the Azores.
Impact of whale watching activities on cetacean populations: assessment and
regulations
SRE / DRT / (SRTA) SRE – DRT - 1996/97 (DOP 1)
A short observation program was established in the islands of Faial, Pico and
São Miguel, during the summer of 1996 with the objective of studying the impact
of whale watching activities, in order to prepare specific legislation for this
increasing activity. Based on other country legislation’s, and our in situ
observations and assessment of cetacean populations a preliminary regulation
was elaborated in February 1997.
Analysis of mercury in canned fish
(SRAP) SRAPA/ DRA 1996-97 (DOP3) - COFACO-DOP/UAç protocol.
Mercury is a toxic substance that accumulates mainly in marine life
organisms. It is important for public health to evaluate and control toxicity levels
of this metal in trophic marine chains. Important as well, is to extend this
knowledge to control the pollution degree of fish/fish products, whenever
requested by the economic agents.
BARCA - Bases for the characterization of tow coastal artisanal fisheries of the
Azores: gill nets and triggerfish.
SRAPA / DRP / SRAPA – DRP – 1998 (DOP 2)
BARCA as started in 1999 at DOP, financed by the regional authority fisheries
department, and is coordinated by Ricardo Serrão Santos and developed by
11

Jorge Fontes and Miguel Machete. It addresses the study of coastal gill net
fishery and the triggerfish fishery. In the first stage, we interviewed fisherman
from several Islands in order to understand the social, economical and
technological aspects of these fisheries. We also perform experimental gillnet
fishing for estimation of selectivity parameters, collect and analyse historical data
necessary to propose adequate regulation for the Azores archipelago. Triggerfish
life history basic aspects are being studied in order to analyse the chances for
wider scale alternative fishery.
NTPA – Study for the implementation of new fisheries techniques in the Azores.
SRAPA / DRP / SRAPA – DRP – 1999 (DOP 1)
The aim of this project was testing the implementation of new fisheries
techniques, namely computerised freight "Electric Jigging Machine - Type: 03 -
16" da Oilwind, in Azorean fisheries.
DETRA – Remote sensing techniques implementation in the Azores – Studies of
mesoscale variability and fisheries support.
SRAPA / DRP 2000
Remote sensing techniques are fundamental to oceanographic studies.
Satellite Oceanography is still a recent field, and it is important that Portugal,
namely, the Azores, present themselves as strong candidates to the
implementation of these techniques to ocean studies. Within this framework, a 3year
project called “Implementation of Remote Sensing Techniques in the Azores
– Mesoscale Variability and Fisheries Support (DETRA)” was submitted in 2000
to the Regional Secretary of Fisheries in the Azores, through the Center of IMAR
at the University of the Azores (IMAR-DOP/UAç). Main objectives of DETRA are
to implement this new scientific area to study marine ecosystem dynamics in the
Azores. To accomplish this, DETRA proposed the installation of a high resolution
satellite station (HRPT) in Faial, Azores (Portugal), to obtain real time AVHRR
(NOAA) and near-real time SeaWiFS (SeaStar) imagery. In April 2001, the HRPT
station of the Azores (named by NASA as “HAZO”) was installed successfully,
becoming the first HRPT station in the Azores to receive SeaWiFS data. HAZO
station receives about 4 to 6 AVHRR and 1 to 2 SeaWiFS images per day. These
images are processed from raw data up to Level-3 data (Sea Surface
Temperature or SST and Ocean Colour) at IMAR-DOP/UAç. This imagery will be
used in different fields of research within the framework of Ocean Sciences.
NOAA imagery will be also used to support fisheries activities.
GEMAS – Evaluation, management and monitor of underwater sandbanks
around Faial, Pico and São Miguel
SRAPA / DROTRH - 2001
The aim of this project is the location and volume determination of underwater
sand banks, around Faial, Pico and São Miguel Islands. The Regional
12

Directorate for Territorial Order and Water Resources will use this information for
the attribution of sea sand extraction licences. In the end of this study will be
presented a management extraction plan for each island, and the consequently
monitoring. For the development of this project the IMAR/DOP has associated to
the Department of Marine Geology of Geologic and Mining Institute (IGM), and to
the Volcanic and Geo-thermic Observatory of the Azores (OVGA).
FISHOR – "Fishing experience of orange-roughy (Hoplosthetus atlanticus)"
The aim of this fishing experience was the prospecting, monitoring of relative
abundance, distribution and biological sampling of orange-roughy, as well as, of
the main by-catch species. For this experience was used the deep-water trawl.
Ocean Forum – Discussion forum about the ocean in the internet
DRCT 2001
The Ocean Forum is an internet forum (www.pg.raa.pt/oceanos or
www.horta.uac.pt/ct) were the oceans are in discuss. In this web page it is
possible for everyone to put questions about the oceans or about all life that
depends on it, or propose a debate of anything related with the ocean.
POPA - Dolphin-safe observer program for the fisheries of the Azores
APASA - AICPA - EII – SRAPA / DRP - LOTAÇOR, EP.
Based on undeniable scientific standards, the main objective of "POPA" is to
ensure no intentional harm or mortality to cetaceans by fishing crews on tuna
fishing vessels and that no cetacean meat be brought on board the vessels. To
ensure this objective is achieved observers will be placed on board of tuna
vessels to observe activities of captains and crewmembers and to investigate
vessels to ensure no tools deemed capable of causing harm to cetaceans. They
will also be responsible for scientific data collection on cetaceans and other
marine species (e.g. pelagic fishes, turtles and seabirds) and on acquiring data
about the fishery (e.g. capture, fishing efforts, ship’s log).
Therefore, and following a priority sequence, the main objectives of this
program are: i) To monitor the largest part of the tuna fleet, safe-guarding against
intentional cetaceans mortality, harm, or harassment in order to build solid
scientific information that can be used to grant the "dolphin safe" label; ii) To use
the information from the cetacean observers program to estimate the population
stocks of the cetacean species most frequently observed in the Azores; iii) To
observe those marine species that are less known in the Azores in terms of
scientific data available: cetaceans, seabirds, turtles, and pelagic fish. These
studies include the distribution and biological sampling of animals accidentally
caught. Deliberate marking of some species is also intended (e.g. turtles). iv) To
13

collect biological data relative to: 1) the tuna species captured during the fishery;
2) the species used as live bait (e.g. biometrics, gonads, stomach, hard
structures) as well as; 3) data related with the tuna fishery (e.g. captures, effort,
fishing grounds, fishery techniques).
Swordfish longline fisheries observation program.
NMFS/EUA–UniversityofFlorida-1997
An observer program on board longline fishing boats was started in 1998.
This has the collaboration of the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research. The
aims of this project is to quantify and describe sea turtle bycatch in Azorean
waters, results are cause for concern. Motivate fishermen for conservation
(undersized fish, plastic garbage, etc.), especially for sea turtle conservation.
Demonstrate how to extract hooks and release turtles carefully.
AERONET - AErosol RObotic NETwork.
NASA - 1999
The AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork) program is an inclusive
federation of ground-based remote sensing aerosol networks established by
AERONET and PHOTON and greatly expanded by AEROCAN and other
agency, institute and university partners. AERONET is a 10-year project. The
goal is to assess aerosol optical properties and validate satellite retrievals of
aerosol optical properties. The network imposes standardization of instruments,
calibration, and processing. Data from this collaboration provides globally
distributed observations of spectral aerosol optical depths, inversion products,
and precipitable water in geographically diverse aerosol regimes. Three levels of
data are available from this website: Level 1.0 (unscreened), Level 1.5 (cloudscreened),
and Level 2.0 (Cloud-screened and quality-assured). Descriptions
may be found of program objectives, affiliations, the instrumentation, operational
issues, data products, data-base browser "demonstrat", research activities, links
to similar data sets, NASA EOS links and personnel involved in AERONET. In
October 1999, NASA signed an agreement with the University of the Azores for
cooperation in the AERONET Program. Main objectives of this cooperation
14

included the installation of an AERONET/SIMBIOS station in the Azores, as
representative of the North Atlantic, and also to encourage scientists from both
countries and institutions to develop research programs based on the Portugal
network data along with aerosol data available from the global AERONET
database located at NASA´s Goddard Space Flight Center, in Maryland. In April
2000, the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries at the University of the
Azores, with the supervision of Dr. Christophe Pietras from NASA/GSFC and Dr.
Ana Martins from IMAR/DOP-UAç (also responsible for the AERONET station in
the Azores), installed successfully an AERONET station at Horta, Faial, Azores.
This station is working since that time and transmits, every hour, atmospheric
data to NASA by GOES satellite.
Fishing experience for the reduction of by-catch of marine turtle in the Azores.
NMFS/EUA–UniversityofFlorida–2000
With this experiment, done in straight collaboration with the ACCSTR and the
National Marine Fisheries Services (USA), we try to determine the effects of gear
modification on sea turtles bycatch rates and the capture of the target species. In
a first stage a commercial longline vessel was chartered and 4 different hook
types were tested. Results are already being published. For a second stage it’s
planed the testing of different baits, well as the use or not of light sticks.
Study of the coastal shallow-water hydrothermal site D. João de Castro Bank.
Franco-Portuguese co-operation (IMAR-DOP/ IFREMER-DRO-EP)
Azores archipelago is characterized by a unique complex geologic system
that permits the existence of deep-water and shallow-water hydrothermal vents.
In the EEZ of the Azores are known four places ranged from 20 to 3000 metres
deep: D. João de Castro, Menez Gwen, Lucky Strike and Rainbow. The
particular composition of hydrothermal fluids increases the concentration of toxic
compounds (heavy metals, H2S, CH4) in the mix zone. The aim of this project is
to starts the chemical (metals, H2S and O2) e fauna characterization of shallow
water hydrothermal vent field D. João de Castro, as well as to determine the
possible impact of this fluids in the food chain.
MAR-ECO - Patterns and Processes of the ecosystems of the Northern Mid-
Atlantic.
CoML
The Mid-Atlantic ridge is the target of an emerging international ecosystem
study under the Census of Marine Life programme. This pilot project shall gather
new knowledge on biodiversity, distribution patterns, and ecological processes,
and the overriding aim is “to describe and understand the patterns of distribution,
abundance and trophic relationships of the organisms inhabiting the mid-oceanic
North Atlantic, and identify and model ecological processes that cause variability
15

in these patterns”. The project will focus on pelagic, benthopelagic and
epibenthic macrofauna, and analyse distribution and abundance patterns in
relation to the abiotic and biotic environment, as well as trophic relationships and
life history strategies. Fish, crustaceans, cephalopods and gelatinous plankton
and nekton have the highest priority in the study.
A major challenge of the project is to overcome observation difficulties at large
depths and in rugged terrain. A central aim is thus to utilise modern remote
sensing technology (acoustics, optics) using advanced instrument carriers (e.g.,
towed vehicles, ROVs, AUVs etc.)
The project will be carried out as a multi-ship operation in 2003-2004, and the
ongoing planning is a collaborative effort involving many nations around the
North Atlantic. The project will work on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and in adjacent
waters from the Azores to Iceland, both by surveying large areas by acoustics
and mid-water trawling, and by focussing on selected sub-areas for intensive
sampling and observation by traditional and novel methods and technology.
Overlapping with the field seasons, the period 2004-2008 will be an analytical
phase, including also submission of data to OBIS.
Scientific divulgation articles
One of our main goals is the scientific divulgation of studies and work done at
IMAR-DOP/UAç. Apart from the list of publications below presented, scientific
divulgation have been made trough the internet by several webpages maintained
in IMAR-DOP/UAç. In those pages have been actualised with important news
related with marine research. We also have divulged our studies in regional and
national televisions, or radio stations.
We maintain regular collaborations with Portuguese edition of “National
Geographic Magazine” and with Portuguese magazine “Mundo Submerso”, and
some sporadic collaboration with generalist magazines (Quo, Visão, Saber and
others). As a result some articles have been made about our work or about team
members of IMAR-DOP/UAç (Fig. 1).
Portuguese edition of “National Geographic Magazine”.
In Ocean Forum webpage (www.horta.uac.pt/ct) the main objective is the
discussion of subjects related with the ocean and all life dependent on it. This
forum has a service of answering questions related with ocean, which in 2001
28

have answered more than 150 questions, and is information was seen for more
than 2000 visitants.
