84- Lakes and Forests of Dorado, Dorado, <strong>Puerto</strong> <strong>Rico</strong><br />

Area Description:<br />

This area is located west of the town of Dorado in the northern part of the island. These<br />

areas inclu<strong>de</strong> the forests, woodland plots, Mata Redonda and other lakes in the property of<br />

Dorado Beach Hotel and the lakes south of road 693 on the golf course of the Cerromar Beach<br />

Hotel. In the property, there is one of the few remaining stands of Pterocarpus officinalis in the<br />

island, consi<strong>de</strong>red an important habitat for wildlife species.<br />

Ownership/Protection:<br />

The properties are private owned by the Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort and Country Club;<br />

and Cerromar Beach Hotel (now know as Hyatt Haciendas <strong>de</strong>l Mar).<br />

Special Recognition:<br />

These lands were recognized as a CWA by Raffaele and Duffield (1979); and by<br />

Cardona and Rivera (1988). Moreno and Pérez (1980) agree with its classification of CWA. The<br />

Lakes and Forest of Dorado are consi<strong>de</strong>red the area with the large number of the threatened<br />

White-crowned pigeon in <strong>Puerto</strong> <strong>Rico</strong> (Bonilla, 2003). Although the area as a whole has<br />

suffered some disturbance and <strong>de</strong>gradation, these lands remains an area of primary wildlife<br />

value.<br />

<strong>Wildlife</strong>:<br />

An on-site inspection of this area was ma<strong>de</strong> in March 2004 to corroborate its wildlife<br />

values. A total of 40 birds species were recor<strong>de</strong>d for the complete area and the floral<br />

composition are represented with 10 species.<br />

Tyrannus dominicensis, Northern mockingbird Mimus polyglottos, Zenaida dove Zenaida<br />

aurita, White-winged dove Z. asiatica, Scaly-napped pigeon Patagioenas squamosa, Whitecrowned<br />

pigeon P. leucocephala, Red-legged thrush Turdus plumbeus, Brown pelican<br />

Pelecanus occi<strong>de</strong>ntalis, Caribbean Coot Fulica caribaea, Common moorhen Gallinula<br />

chloropus, Green heron Butori<strong>de</strong>s virescens, Pied-billed grebe Podilymbus podiceps, Blacknecked<br />

stilt Himantopus mexicanus, Spotted sandpiper Actitis macularia, Kill<strong>de</strong>er Charadrius<br />

vociferus, Belted kingfisher Ceryle alcyon, Northern waterthrush Seiurus noveboracensis,<br />

Yellow-crowned night heron Nyctanassa violacea, Great blue heron Ar<strong>de</strong>a herodias, Great egret<br />

dove Columbina passerina, Smooth-billed ani Crotophaga ani (Moreno and Pérez, 1980;<br />
