22- Los Caños, Culebra, <strong>Puerto</strong> <strong>Rico</strong><br />

Area Description:<br />

Located in the east of the town of the Island, between the <strong>Puerto</strong> <strong>de</strong> Manglar and<br />

Cementerio Bay CWA’s, Los Caños is approximately 29 ha in size and it is composed of<br />

mangrove stands, islets and interconnecting channels. It is an important area for migrant and<br />

resi<strong>de</strong>nt shorebirds, and it is part of the Culebra National <strong>Wildlife</strong> Refuge (Cardona and Rivera<br />

1988). <strong>Wildlife</strong> use of the area is poorly known.<br />

Ownership/Protection:<br />

Los Caños is part of the Culebra National <strong>Wildlife</strong> Refuge, administered by the U. S.<br />

Fish and <strong>Wildlife</strong> Service.<br />

Special Recognition:<br />

Because it’s an important roosting area for the rare White-crowned pigeon, and the<br />

threatened White-cheeked pintail, is still classified as a prime wildlife area.<br />

<strong>Wildlife</strong>:<br />

Birds<br />

White-crowned pigeon Patagioenas leucocephala and the Scaly-naped pigeon P.<br />

squamosa roost in this CWA (J. Saliva pers.comm.). Others birds are the White-cheeked pintail<br />

Anas bahamensis, Black-necked stilt Himantopus mexicanus, Green heron Butori<strong>de</strong>s virescens<br />

and the Greater yellowlegs Tringa melanoleuca.<br />

Threats:<br />

Private properties around this CWA can be <strong>de</strong>veloped, causing habitat loss and<br />

<strong>de</strong>gradation, and probably, contamination by sediments on the bay, caused by erosion and<br />

runoff.<br />

Conservation Recommendations:<br />

To continue the patrolling of the area by personnel of law enforcement of USFWS in<br />

or<strong>de</strong>r to control possible activities that can affect the quality of this CWA.<br />
