The By-Spiel Story
By-Spiel Project
Founded in 1998 by Andreas Fulgosi, the By-Spiel Project has set out to explore the universe
of jazz sound using traditional instruments from accross a number of cultures as well as more
recent instruments. The Project creates a multitude of contrasts in its original compositions. It
walks the line between groove and improvisation and finds inspiration in traditional musical
motifs from Australia to Finland, via Africa and the Balkans. The Project has been born of a
thirst to communicate in a universal language.
Over the years, the group has forged its identity from the growing repertoire of its musicians’
compositions and has found an entusiastic audience, particularly in Germany where it recorded
its first record with its guest performer, the avant garde German trombonist Albert
Mangelsdorff.
Along with the musicians’ main instruments, the Project uses the conque, the didgeridoo, the
Alpine horn, touareg cruches, guitar synthesizer, voices and some instruments created by the
musicians themselves.
The group has also played at a number of festivals : the Berlin Jazzfest, the Prague jazz
festival, the Ouagadougou jazz festival, the Saint-Louis jazz festival in Sénégal, the Guinea
jazz festival, Accra jazz nights in Ghana, the Savona jazz festival in Italie. The Project’s tours
have taken it to Germany, the Czech Republic, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Ghana, Guinea,
Madagascar and Italy.
Over recent years musicians playing with the group have included the Italian trumpeter Daniel
Verdesca, the Swiss saxophonist Joël Musy, the American trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist
Bill Holden, the Swiss drummer Philippe Böllenrücher, the French drummer Tobie Langel,
the Swedish trumpeter Lars Lindvall, the Swiss saxophonist and clarinettist Maurice
Magnoni. All of these musicians have greatly contributed to enriching the work of the Project.
Andreas Fulgosi has been reshaping the group since 2002, creating a space for collaboration
with guest musicians. This has promoted exchange, enhanced the Project's work and provided
fertile ground for new concepts. The 2005 Madagascar tour saw the group morph into a septet
with Olombelo Ricky on voice and percussion, Thierry Razakamiadana on saxophone and
Johnny Razafimanahirana on guitar and bass.
The encounter with Ali Farka Toure and his musicians in 2005 transformed the By-Spiel
Project’s compositions and approach to music. From that moment, western Africa’s musical
culture became a major influence on the group and interaction with African musicians has
increased. During the tour of Mali in 2006, Bassekou Kouyate (on the ngouni), Neba Solo
(on the balafon) and Olombelo Ricky collaborated with the group.
The Project members in 2007 are the guitarist Andreas Fulgosi, the drummer percussionist
Luigi Galati, the trombonist and multi-instrumentalist Pascal Schaer, the clarinettist Nicola
Orioli and the Burkinabe percussionist Baba Konate.
The Swedish trumpeter Lars Lindvall and the Madagascan percussionist and vocalist
Olombelo Ricky collaborate with the group for some concerts in Switzerland and elsewhere.
By-Spiel Project
Andreas Fulgosi’s playing reveals a slightly saturated sound, accompanied by syncopated
phrasing. He does not hesitate to play with melodic and harmonic tensions, giving a unique
texture to his compositions, in which he delights in exploiting the sounds and universe of the
electric guitar.
Originally a classical cello player before fully devoting himself to the guitar, he deepens his
knowledge of improvisation at the AMR (an association for the encouragement of improvised
music), Geneva.
After attending the Montreux Jazz School and the Bern Jazz School, he studies with Mick
Goodrick, John Scofield and Wolfgang Muthspiel.
In the early 90’s he forms his first band as a leader, the BLT quartet (modern jazz).
His collaboration with German ballerina and choreographer Sibylla Klein on the shows
"Empty Space", "Wo gehen die geträumten Träume", "Shocking Life" and "Tauko", a
Finnish exhibition, for which he writes and interprets the music, widens the range of his
musical approach.
Andreas Fulgosi forms the By-Spiel project, eager to make full use of the world of sounds in
jazz music through the use of traditional instruments from different cultures as well as modern
instruments mixed with electronics. Thus, he creates a multitude of contrasts within his
original compositions. He releases « Looking Outside », recorded with German avant-gardist
trombone player Albert Mangelsdorff and «Madagascar« , following the encounter with
Madagascan percussionist Olombelo Ricky.
The other ensembles he leads and composes for are also part of his musical environment :
"Blood on the Floor" (compositions inspired by the music of the Sex Pistols) and the quartet
"Dusty Road"(guit, pedal steel, b, dms, modal electric jazz).
He is also member of the Fulgosi-Perez quintet (modern jazz), Red Brick Organic trio
(guit, Hammond B3, dms). "VAL AFUMO" (live improvisation on the movies of American
cineast Mike Ballou), "Stringvox" duo and "Palatone" (live poetry and music).
Andreas Fulgosi has performed with: Lars Lindvall (tp), Olombelo Ricky (perc), Albert
Mangelsdorff (tb), Jean- Jacques Pedretti (tb), François Gallixe (b), Pia Karaspuro (dance),
Maurice Magnoni (sax, cl), Ali Farka Touré (voc, guit), Bassekou Kouyaté (N'gouni), Ba
Cissoko (kora), Neba Solo (balaphon), Michel Bastet (p), Serge Zaug (sax), Bill Holden (tp),
Patrice Moret (b), Luigi Galati (dm), Jérôme Regard (b), Samuel Blaser (tb), Nicola Orioli
(cl,sax), Pascal Schaer (tb), Lionel Friedli (dm), Philippe Aerts (b), Marcelo Aguirre (dm),
Peter Morrens (complete artist), Juha Valkeapää (vocal perform) and Claudia Urio (voc).
He played in the Berlin Jazzfest, the Prague Jazz Festival, the Munich Jazz Festival, the Görlitz
Jazz Festival, the Ouagadougou Jazz Festival, the Saint-Louis Jazz Festiva (Sénégal), the
Guinea Jazz Festival , the Accra Jazz Nights (Ghana), the Savona Jazz Festival (Italiy) and
Jazz Festival Madajazzcar (Madagascar).
Baba Konate
Percussio n is t, tea cher, cr af ts man
1 974 (Burk ina F aso)
By-Spiel Project
Baba Konate comes from a long line of griots (West African poets and praise singers)
whose music is passed on from father to son. He began learning percussion at the age
of 5 and his talent and passion for music soon earned him a position as a soloist
within his family.
At the age of 18 he founded the Badema troop, comprising percussionists, dancers
and singers. At the same time he was trained as an artistic director by the teachers
Alassaned Kongo and Yaya Konate from the Ministry of Arts and Culture of Burkina
Faso.
Today, he divides his time between concerts in Africa and Europe, participating in
National Culture Weeks, teaching and making percussion instruments (djembe, tama,
dumdum and balafons)
Babe Konate is a musician with vision who strives to bring his musical traditions into
contact with the rest of the world. This spirit of engagement has brought him together
with many musicians from other cultures and these encounters have driven him to
develop his music and his ideas: an endeavour which has naturally brought him to
work with jazz, blues or modern music groups.
Baba Konate has been director of the Badema troop since its creation in 1992. The
troop regularly gives concerts and performs at festivals and cultural competitions in
Burkina Faso. In 2004 he toured France with his group, giving a number of percussion
workshops (Musique du Bac, J B de la Salle, France.
Since 2002, he has been a sideman in the By-Spiel Project and has joined them on
tour in Switzerland, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Madagascar. He's also played with the
group at a number of festival: Jazz à Ouaga (Burkina Faso), Saint-Louis Jazz festival
(Senegal), French Cultural Centre in Dakar, Just4U in Dakar (Senegal), Madajazzscar
(Madagascar), Jazz at L'A.M.R, Geneva (Switzerland).
In his work teaching musical language at the Conservatoire de Genève, he has joined
forces with a professor there, Pascal Schaer, to develop teaching materials (sheet
music, CD, etc) to help students learn rhythm, tempo and group work.
He has performed with Pascal Schaer's quartet at numerous concerts in Switzerland
and France, notably at the Altdorf (Lucerne) and Laffi Bala (Chambery) international
festivals. He is also a sideman of the Swiss group NK.
In 2005 he has continued to run teacher workshops at the Conservatoire de Genève
as also runs children's workshops on musical awareness and elementary and
advanced music in Burkina Faso
and Geneva.
Baba Konaté has performed with:
clar ine ts , a lto s ax aphone, co mposer, tea cher
1 959 (It al y)
By-Spiel Project
Nicola's plays the clarinet with powerful, seductive virtuosity. His past as a classical
musician has given him a deep understanding of music's traditional idioms. He draws
from the well of European musical culture to craft improvisations with a palette of
colours that suprise and then subside to give way to flights of soaring lyrical beauty
that propel his music ever higher. His mastery of the art of continual breath enables
him to instil a mood that invites the ear to discover his instruments' hidden sounds.
At the age of 12, he began playing the clarinet in his village band, which he later went
on to lead for ten years. Together with the band, he won first prize at two
international competitions (Arezzo 1984 and Florence 1992). Aged 16, he began to
study the saxophone at the Parma Jazz School. He later studied clarinet at the
Pescara Music College where he graduated with distinction in 1985. His career as
clarinettist saw him join a number of symphony orchestras as well as the Catania
Opera Theatre Orchestra (Italy).
In 1992 he left Italy for Switzerlnd where he worked as a musician/composer for
several theatre companies with whom he toured Europe, Western Africa and the
United States. Since 1998 he has been working principally in theatre but also teaches
the clarinet and the saxophone at the Lausanne School of Jazz (Switzerland).
He leads the projects Virtual Sax and MAF quartet. He is also sideman in the Maf-Yo
quartet, Edition Spéciale, Luca Pagano Quintet, Jazz Cookies, Les Chaussettes
Synthétiques, Alain Della Maestra's Big Band and the By-Spiel Project.
1 964 (M adagas car)
This artist gives himself completely, he projects himself into his work, body and soul.
That's why Olombelo Ricky draws no dividing line between his spiritual, creative and
analytical sides. And that's why his is such an outstanding artist; he has crafted his
self in nature's image: brimming with diversity but resonating in harmony.
Straight to the Source
Traditional music and art in Madagascar is not seen as being separate from spirtuality,
values and customs. Olombelo Ricky's wisdom and musical depth have their roots in
the soil of this fertile culture. He was born into a world of music and nurtured by his
grandmother, herself one of Madagascar's living legends. Here, in an environment
where the stuff of tales and legend was daily fare, Olombelo Ricky built the very core
of his creative drive.
He continued his studies at Antananarivo and joined his uncle's group, the Salomon
Band and Ramz Franck Melody Jazz as a singer-percussionist and perfected his art
under the guidance of a talented Madagascan musician - Tovo Andrianandrainy.
From 1979 to 1983 he played with the group Mahera at their folk concerts and
subsequently embarked on a solo career in 1989. For almost 13 years Ricky has been
researching his roots in the culture of the Vazimba, Madagascar's indigenous people,
- 6 -
By-Spiel Project
while at the same time perfecting his skills and deepening his understanding of
traditional music and instruments.
This period has left its mark on his music: the Aponga or percussions, traditional
rhythms such as the Sireko (funereal song for the aged and the wise), the Sery, the
Antsabe, the Koendra (sacred Vazimba song for prayers, marriages and funerals), the
Balitika (Antaisaka dance rhythm from the South-East) and the Katreky are evident in
his compositions and sometimes mixed with other, multicultural influences.
Each year, after the baccalaureat exams, Olombelo Ricky and his musicians mix
performance and ritual for the "Manala azy", a rite of passage and purification and an
unmissable annual youth event.
Ricky is a believer in synergy between the Arts, which is why he seels fertilization
between different artistic disciplines. He's also one of the first Madagascan artists to
use dance, story-telling, theatre and representational art to enrich his performances,
and, above all else, the first to have created and developed contemporary works of art
such as Armagedon, Intelo, Vohidrazana (with Ariry Andriamoratsiresy and Puse),
Angano Mozika, Voajanahari (with Dama, Hajazz, Ramaka and Richard
Razafindrakoto)
Ricky has received national and international recognition for the quality and originality
of his work. He receives frequent invtiations to perform his work, which is of such
benefit to world music as a whole. He wants to convey Madagascan identity as he
perceives it and shares his artistic experiences via collaborations, notably with the
Théâtre Talipot (Reunion), Airto Moreira (Brasil), Changuito (Cuba), Spiritual
Healers (South Africa), Amampondo (South Africa), Pedexulu (South Africa,
Luigi’s subtile, creative and interactive play makes him stand out . With his powerful
drive, he brings to By-Spiel Project a language tinged with unexpected atmospheres,
coming from the percussion of material such as kitchen ustensils and other objects
inspiring curiosity to the public, and bringing to perfection the sound created by the
other musicians. Entering the service of music and always being in touch with others,
his very intutive accompaniment show an intense/high sensibility that makes him a
precious By-Spiel project musician.
Luigi discovers the drums at the age of 15 with his first teacher, Marco Scarinzi. He
then studies the instrument during six years with Norbert Pfammatter before entering
the Swiss jazz School of Berne, where he studies with Billy Brooks and Ueli Müller. He
obtains his teaching diploma with Leonzio Cherubini and Olivier Clerc at the Swiss jazz
School of Montreux. During all these years, he follows courses with Charlie Blatter
and musical experiences will increase through his association with various music
groups such as « le Bidon Clique » ( Carnaval percussion Band), as percussionnist in
the « Spectacle des jardins de la paix » (put on stage by Gérard Demière), with the
« Big Band » of Biel and Montreux as well as with the « in Person » group that
travelled the roads loaf Switzerland and France in 1995/1996.
