2004 Accomplishments
STRENGTHENING THE PROFESSION
Implicit in the word “philanthropy” is the belief that ethical and effective
fundraising is the cornerstone that strengthens the sector. In addition to
increasing knowledge and training professional fundraisers, it is AFP’s goal to
achieve recognition and understanding of
the positive economic impact of the profession
and the nonprofit sector and to
increase the public trust in fundraising and
the profession.
At the heart of AFP and one of the reasons it
was founded, is the need to promote and
uphold the principles and tenants of the
AFP Code of Ethical Principles and
Standards of Professional Practice.
In 2004 AFP worked towards achieving these goals through a continuation
of the media partnerships with The New York Times and Canada’s National
Post. Both newspapers publish special sections focusing on philanthropy.
The New York Times publishes an annual “Giving” section, and AFP helps to
promote readership and advertising support, as well as contributes editorial
ideas and comment. The National Post produces a special “National
Philanthropy Day®” supplement in close
partnership with AFP. AFP not only promotes
the section, but also helps in determining
the editorial content, developing
story ideas and providing comment.
Chapters across Canada use the supplement
in their own NPD activities, distributing it
to attendees at their various events. AFP’s
goal in working with both these highly
respected publications is to increase the
5
awareness and trust in fundraising in the general public. AFP also partnered
with New York-based SankyNet, who provided pro bono support to produce
and promote the National Philanthropy Day® website. The site was visited
by more than 100,000 unique visitors, mostly driven by the National
Geographic Society website.
AFP responds to more than 600 media inquiries a year, promoting ethical
and effective fundraising and its impact on the communities it serves and
society in general. Another popular program, with both members and the
media, is the annual AFP State of Fundraising report. AFP annually studies
its members, asking them how their fundraising efforts compared to the
prior year, as well as asking respondents to identify the challenges and
opportunities facing them.We also ask respondents to predict future
fundraising success.
ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC POLICY
It is imperative that AFP helps lead
efforts to shape the legislative and regulatory
environments in which
fundraisers and nonprofits operate, as
well as increase awareness about
issues affecting the sector.
In 2004 in the United States,AFP led
the charge for charitable incentive legislation
(formerly CARE Act and HR7)
and kept it on the radar scope and will
continue to advocate for incentives in the 2005 legislative session. AFP will
continue to monitor and influence all levels of government, focusing particularly
on legislative issues as they pertain to philanthropy.
