AFP…Advancing Philanthropy through Education, Training and Advocacy. 2004 Accomplishments AFP continues to be very involved in responding to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee charitable sector draft proposals, having submitted in-depth written comments and testified before the Committee in 2004. AFP is represented on the Independent Sector Initiative to provide further review of the charitable sector. AFP successfully worked with the California Attorney General’s office to make significant changes to SB 1262, the charity/fundraiser registration bill. We also successfully worked to have the FCC again delay implementation of the “do not fax” rule. As 2004 was an election year in the United States,AFP implemented an online Vote for Philanthropy website, with information about candidates, their voting records on issues of importance to the nonprofit sector, as well as information on the candidates running for President. AFP continues to participate on the Canada Revenue Agency’s Charities Advisory Committee and Charities Technical Committee.We submitted comments to and testified before the Canadian Standing Committee on Finance and appeared before the Senate Banking Committee and also successfully petitioned for a delay of the Canadian “do not call” list regulations. AFP also worked to advance grassroots lobbying efforts by strengthening the AFP chapters’ capacity to engage in advocacy efforts at the state, local and provincial levels. CHAPTER PARTNERSHIPS Chapters are the local face of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and as such are critical partners in strengthening not only the organization, but the profession we serve. 6 AFP has increased the international headquarters capabilities to provide member information to chapter leadership in an easy and accessible format through technology and the use of the Internet. By developing online chapter reports for membership updates, joins, reimbursements and member transfers, chapters can more easily and accurately track member activity. AFP also completed work on the AFP Marketing Plan, which assists chapters in identifying member prospect audiences, messages, tactics and strategies to increase membership and build awareness about AFP in their local communities. A new benefits of membership DVD was developed and distributed to all chapters to help in orientation, recruitment and retention of chapter members. AFP also put a new member/chapter services model in place with area regional chapter managers working closely and directly with AFP chapters to help recruit and retain AFP members.These programs and plans are designed to improve individual member and chapter understanding of the comprehensive benefits provided by AFP membership. CONNECTING COMMUNITIES AFP is committed to connecting and serving a diverse and international community of development professionals.Through AFP diversity initiatives,AFP is committed to increasing the number and providing more resources to serve diverse populations. It is the hope of AFP leadership to begin a dialogue among diverse communities of fundraising professionals, organizations, funders and researchers to learn more about expanding the participation of diverse communities in fundraising and of learning more about the needs of diverse professionals. AFP also worked on producing the First Hemispheric Congress on Fundraising in Mexico City to provide educational opportunities to Latin American fundraising professionals. In addition,AFP began translating its popular Ready Reference series and courses into Spanish and French. AFP continues to make translation a priority in reaching out to diverse communities. AFP also signed a strategic alliance with The Resource Alliance, a nonprofit provider of education to the nonprofit sector.The Resource Alliance is based in London and produces several conferences and educational events on an annual basis.They share AFP’s goals on educating fundraising professionals and as such are partners with AFP on the Hemispheric Congress on Fundraising in Mexico City. We also continue to educate members and professionals in the nonprofit sector about the value of belonging to an international community of fundraising professionals through involvement in AFP. AFP introduced two 7 new classes of membership — the collegiate membership and the business membership. Both of these membership categories reach out to groups that can benefit from an affiliation with AFP and a commitment to upholding the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice. Work on developing and marketing to prospects in these new membership categories will begin in 2005. ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS AFP will continue to be an effective and efficiently operated organization with appropriate governance and management structures in place, striving to strengthen the profession and the nonprofit sector. AFP will work in concert with the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada to provide funding support for strategic initiatives. In 2004, the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada both developed strategic initiatives focused on furthering the mission and work of AFP.
