THE ESTATE

The estate was purchased by <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> Hesse <strong>in</strong> 1957.<br />

At that time, it was only 7 ha / 17 acres <strong>in</strong> size.<br />

Major changes and improvements s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n, especially from 2005 on (arrival <strong>of</strong> Dr. Clemens Kiefer):<br />

- sell<strong>in</strong>g-<strong>of</strong>f certa<strong>in</strong> non-suit<strong>in</strong>g areas (unfavorable geographical location, quality aspect)<br />

- at <strong>the</strong> same time <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>of</strong> acreage to 33 ha <strong>in</strong> total<br />

- m<strong>in</strong>imization <strong>of</strong> grape varieties and ma<strong>in</strong> focus on Riesl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

- <strong>in</strong>vestments and modernisation <strong>of</strong> cellar technology & long traditions<br />

A new era began at PRINZ VON HESSEN <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fall <strong>of</strong> 2005, when Dr. Clemens Kiefer became <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e estate’s director. "Over <strong>the</strong><br />

last couple <strong>of</strong> years, we have taken a path that was rocky, but very necessary,” says Dr. Kiefer. “With <strong>the</strong> close co-operation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> Hesse, we scrut<strong>in</strong>ized every part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ery, and created <strong>the</strong>m anew.“<br />

Donatus Pr<strong>in</strong>z <strong>von</strong> <strong>Hessen</strong> adds: "It is a deep desire and an utter pleasure to awaken <strong>the</strong> potential <strong>of</strong> our v<strong>in</strong>eyards that, until now,<br />

has been slumber<strong>in</strong>g – <strong>in</strong> fact, barely ever tapped.”<br />

THE ESTATE

Consumers should be <strong>of</strong>fered w<strong>in</strong>es that are easy to understand:<br />

Dist<strong>in</strong>ctive style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> PRINZ VON HESSEN Riesl<strong>in</strong>gs – clear, pure, vivid.<br />

„It was, and still is, a big challenge for us to br<strong>in</strong>g 800 years <strong>of</strong> family tradition toge<strong>the</strong>r with today‘s<br />

modern w<strong>in</strong>e demands <strong>in</strong> a harmonious way – so that <strong>the</strong>y streng<strong>the</strong>n each o<strong>the</strong>r.“<br />

(Donatus Pr<strong>in</strong>z <strong>von</strong> <strong>Hessen</strong>)<br />

The <strong>in</strong>teraction <strong>of</strong> „tradition and modern“ is reflected through <strong>the</strong> entire w<strong>in</strong>e estate. While <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>es, with <strong>the</strong>ir bright, lively and fresh expression, demonstrate a modern style, <strong>the</strong><br />

focus on Riesl<strong>in</strong>g is testament to Rhe<strong>in</strong>gau tradition.<br />
