10 YEARS ANNIVERSARY
Dear Reader,
Many European cities are affected by
the constant increase in motorised
transport. Traffic and mobility are
among the major challenges of our
time. Activities to reduce energy consumption
and the negative impacts on
the environment – e.g. steadily rising CO2 emissions –
very often exclude transport measures. At local and regional
levels, key actors such as decision makers, public
authorities, planners, journalists, researchers, University
staff, energy and management agencies and many other
practitioners deal with transport issues and need up-todate
information and tools to assist them with their implementation
of effective measures. The European Commission
therefore aims to strengthen their knowledge
and foster the exchange of experience.
Back in November 1998 during the “Innovation in Urban
Transport” Conference in Graz, Austria, ELTIS, the European
Local Transport Information Service was launched
by DG TREN.
Now, ten years later, ELTIS has celebrated its 10th anniversary.
To mark the occasion ELTIS has rewarded
selected users for their active involvement. Ilie Cretu and Ioana Mihailescu from the Romanian City of Sibiu
received the ELTIS Award for the submission of case study N° 1,000 and Szilvia Zsargo from Budapest
received the Award for active participation in the ELTIS User Association. European Commission Policy
Officer Marcel Rommerts presented the awards at a ceremony during the CIVITAS FORUM in Bologna.
Over the past three years ELTIS has developed rapidly. Since the beginning of 2006 the number of case
studies has increased by ca. 300% to currently more than 1,320. Instead of having on average 1-10 news
items / month, ELTIS now provides 1 per day. The users appreciate this development. The download numbers
clearly demonstrate the fact that more and more people are using ELTIS. By the middle of 2008 the
magic target of 300,000 requests/hits / month was reached and we’re still counting.
It is a pleasure to provide, free of charge, all the materials of ELTIS (many in a wide range of languages)
for downloading from our website, www.eltis.org. Whenever possible, it makes sense for practitioners and
researchers to use existing knowledge. Why re-invent the wheel? We hope that the news and information,
teaching and training materials, case studies (with content on measures and campaigns and their results)
and tools for practitioners available on ELTIS will be reflected in future local policies and strategies. Interested
parties are most welcome to submit their own case studies and results to feed into the enormous
data base of Europe’s N° 1 information platform on urban transport.
I would like to congratulate most sincerely on the occasion
of the 10th anniversary of ELTIS.
Transport serves the well being of our citizens. This
must involve a high level of awareness of sustainability,
sensitivity for the environment and responsibility for the
same level of well being of the next generations.
Zoltan Kazatsay
Deputy Director General
Directorate for Energy and Transport
If ELTIS wouldn’t already exist, it would be necessary to
invent it and establish it at once! There are so many networks
in Europe. However, I have rarely been that convinced
about the usefulness of a network as I am about
ELTIS. Let me congratulate on the 10th anniversary. I
wish and hope for many more anniversaries. This is a
festive day not only for the founders and contributors
but also with regards to the efforts for a better and more
sustainable mobility in Europe. Stuttgart, as a centre for
mobility in Europe, is happy to join the celebrations.
Martin Schairer
Vice Mayor of the City of Stuttgart,
Germany
At the ocassion of the 10th Anniversary of the ELTIS, I would
like to express my admiration for all the achievements and
more than succesful realization of its mission during recent
past decade.
To express my gratitude to the e-platform as such, I would like
especially to underline the importance which www.eltis.org
brings to the experts as well as to the wider community in the
field of searching for and giving proper and extensive information
in creating synergies by combining sustainable mobility
(walking/cycling) and health benefits (more regular, daily
physical activity / cleaner air). To the best of my knowledge, it
represents absolutely the biggest and the best one site source
for these important parts of promotion of healthier, active
lifestyle, which is of invaluable importance in preserving health
and preventing different types of chronic, non-communicable
diseases, among which the cardiovascular are the most
prevalent.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Regional
Environmental Center for Central and Eastern
Europe (REC), I would like to congratulate you
on the 10th anniversary of your organization and
wish to assure you that the entire staff of the REC
is honoured to have become part of this great
success story!
REC will do its best that “Europe’s number one
web portal on sustainable urban mobility” becomes
widely known and actively used in the new
member states and neighbouring countries of the
European Union.
I have often used ELTIS for reference material
for books and papers, as well as a valuable
teaching resource both here at Loughborough
and for external training. It is one of the best
sites on the internet for information about European
best practice in clean urban transport
- I congratulate ELTIS on its ten year anniversary,
and long may it continue!
the International Association of Public Transport
(UITP) - which represents some 3,100 public
transport operators, authorities and industry
actors from over 90 countries - is particularly
pleased to congratulate you on 10 years of
providing information, exchange and support
on urban transport and mobility in Europe. We
wish you every continued success in the years
to come.
The tenth birthday of ELTIS proves that
the idea of one consolidated European
information source on urban transport
and mobility was a good one. Despite its
modest means, ELTIS has grown in ambition,
contents and use. I thank all ELTIS
users for their input and support, and all
organisations that have helped to build
up ELTIS for their efforts. I wish ELTIS a
successful future.
Congratulations!
Concerns about Urban Freight and its role in
transport systems, are quite recent. There are few
methodological approaches and design tools in this
domain but a large bunch of experimentations and
demonstrations realised in various cities. Experience
sharing and explained show cases are then
the most efficient way for transferring knowledge; in
this way the ELTIS platform is a powerful tool to help
Local Transport Authorities and their associates to
design and to implement adequate solutions as well
as to find contact persons to learn about difficulties,
barriers and opportunities, key success
factors.
Gratulation an ELTIS!
ELTIS is a rich source of good ideas and examples of
successful implementation in the field of urban transport,
and for this reason it is of course of great interest
to us as we progress with the implementation of
our own transport policy here in Graz. We are also
very proud that many of the case studies in the ELTIS
database come from Graz, and that in this way our city
can act as a best practice example for the wider public
in the whole of Europe, and beyond. In summary, I
wish ELTIS every success in the future in continuing its
excellent work.
Lisa Rücker
Vice Mayor of the City of Graz
Austria
The ELTIS data base has been proved a very
valuable and indispensable tool for me, both as
a researcher and as a practitioner. ELTIS has established
itself as the one-stop shop for reliable,
useful and integrated information on all aspects
of urban transport for all of us involved in this
field. My sincere congratulations to all people
and organisations that contributed in making
ELTIS such a
success story.
I would like to congratulate the ELTIS community in its
10th anniversary!
Ten years of hard work and contributions of many
European transport professionals have shown that this
service was needed. ELTIS was a dream established
with very modest means and, lots of hope, by a very
small group of European mobility experts. The ELTIS
community has expanded enormously since then
and, keeps on growing. I take the opportunity to thank
all ELTIS users and organisations behind it for their
support throughout these years and, look forward to
celebrate an even most successful 20th
birthday.
Given the severe problems generated by traffic in
our cities as well as for our citizens, the environment
and the economy everywhere in the world,
the transfer of knowledge [in terms of sustainable
developments and the utilization of relevant
research results from EU-projects] is tremendously
important. With regard to the preliminary papers of
the German Presidency of the EU-Council for the
Charter of Leipzig ELTIS was a treasure trove of
innovative examples and new solutions concerning
urban traffic, crossing language and cultural
boundaries. Congratulations ELTIS!
Congratulations to the ELTIS team for your excellent
effort! Your commitment, professionalism and
creativity shown while updating ELTIS web page,
organising training events, networking and more,
has been simply superb.
I hereby take the opportunity to especially thank
you for organising ELTIS training which Tallinn
transport professionals have had the pleasure
to attend. Thank you for your support, cooperation
and human scale approach! Wish you all the
enthiusiasm and energy for continuing on your
good work!
I would like to congratulate ELTIS team for excellent
job done in providing urban mobility information across
Europe. As me and my colleagues from Krakow have
participated in different training sessions organized by
ELTIS (i.e. in Graz and Budapest) especially
I appreciate professionalism and efficiency of these
events organisation. Basing on our common interests
and excellent cooperation, we decided to organise next
ELTIS training session in Krakow! (April
2009).
Dear ELTIS team,
we congratulate ELTIS to ten years of support
for sustainable mobility.
Since two years we share in ELTIS’s database
of case studies, and this has been a fantastic
success: ELTIS has tripled the number of
mobility management case studies. ELTIS is
for us the most extensive and most reliable
source of sustainable transport information,
but also an excellent support for dissemination.
We wish ELTIS further success and
support for the coming years, and are looking
forward to many more years of cooperation
and growth.
It is with great pleasure that RENAEL (Network
of Italian Energy Agencies) congratulates you on
the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the ELTIS
Portal.
I know what kind of effort goes into earning such
a result and how hard you must have worked to
achieve such a success. You have been a great
example to the Italian energy agencies in developing
and promoting sustainable urban transport.
Congratulations and best wishes for
continued success!
Over a 1200 best practices case studies in 10 years
is quite an achievement. Together with the CIVITAS
website, ELTIS forms a great portal for local transport
initiatives. Congratulations!
Congratulations to ELTIS for these 10 years
spent in providing information service about
public transport. It is a real chance to be able
to benefit from such a platform which facilitates
the trans-national cooperation. It is a reservoir of
best-practices useful for all actors in the world of
transport & mobility.
CONGRATULATIONS, ELTIS!
At the very special occasion of 10th anniversary, we wish
to extend our sincere congratulations to the whole team
of ELTIS web portal, which, in our experience indeed is
„Europe’s number one web portal on urban transport and
mobility“.
As a small town faced with the challenges of transport
over the recent years we have been trying to find local
solutions, always looking for advice and best practice examples.
ELTIS has provided us with many such inspiring
examples. It has also enabled us to assess the results of
our own programmes and projects in comparision to the
other presented cases and to share our own experience
and hopefully support other communities.
ELTIS has also helped us to connect to other local communities
and made us part of a larger European network
of towns and transport-related institutions. We rely on
ELTIS for reliable, first-hand information and guidance.
We hope to contribute even more in its excellent results
and wish its team many successful decades of excellent
work towards our common aim. Thank you, ELTIS! Many
happy returns.
Projects and databases come and go,
ELTIS stays! I’ve seen several attempts
to install a info service like ELTIS on the
European level, some of them bad, some
of them good and still exisiting, but none of
them with the depth and the width of ELTIS!
Good luck for at least the next
10 years.
Congratulations to ELTIS for its 10th anniversary and
to the staff of FGM-AMOR for their excellent work! As a
worldwide network for sustainable urban mobility, Cities
best practice examples, available online in many
languages, that allow to transfer successful strategies
and instruments to other cities around the world quite
easily.
It is just a coincidence but my daughter
was born in november 1998 and now, I
wouldn´t know what to do without her.
Today, if you ask me about a database for
mobility and urban transport apart from
ELTIS I’ll need time to think. Someone said
you are nº 1 in the world. Congratulations,
Already ten years?! In the last decade
ELTIS has been part of my daily work
- to learn and to connect with colleagues
of all over Europe working on projects that
I am starting or already working for sometime
and need some advise. When other
Portuguese colleagues ask me about some
topics or projects on transport and mobility I
always give them two advises: go to ELTIS
and just connect!
As an environmental organisation we appreciate
very much the information and
services from ELTIS. It is a perfect possibility
for us to foster our know how in the field
of transport and mobility. Since we now
also co-ordinate a STEER project that will
transfer its results into ELTIS we feel happy
even more to be part of this big
success.
I’ve used ELTIS many times both in my
PhD research on road pricing, then later
in research about arterial streets and now
in my work in consultancy. It is one of
the most useful resources on sustainable
urban transport on the web and in recent
years it’s become even better. I wish ELTIS
many happy returns on its tenth birthday,
and hope it will be around on the European
transport scene for many
years to come.
Fostering sustainable mobility ranks among the big
challenges of our society. The ELTIS portal is an
excellent tool for bringing successful experiences
closer to those ones who are concerned about their
mobility habits, as well as those ones who are deciding
on transport planning and management. The
European Commission’s Intelligent Energy Europe
programme uses extensively the portal and contributes
lessons of experiences through its STEER
projects. Best compliments on the 10th anniversary!
Our daily practice clearly shows:
effective and durable transport planning solutions
are increasingly based on a learning from excellent
examples elsewhere.
Our efforts to continuously improve our regional
transport system are greatly sustained by ELTIS.
The platform has been inspiring us since its outset
and - most important - it has helped establish durable
contact with planning bodies from across the
continent. - My sincere thanks to all who contribute
to ELTIS - we’ll keep on using it!
