10 YEARS ANNIVERSARY
Dear Reader,
Many European cities are affected by
the constant increase in motorised
transport. Traffic and mobility are
among the major challenges of our
time. Activities to reduce energy consumption
and the negative impacts on
the environment – e.g. steadily rising CO2 emissions –
very often exclude transport measures. At local and regional
levels, key actors such as decision makers, public
authorities, planners, journalists, researchers, University
staff, energy and management agencies and many other
practitioners deal with transport issues and need up-todate
information and tools to assist them with their implementation
of effective measures. The European Commission
therefore aims to strengthen their knowledge
and foster the exchange of experience.
Back in November 1998 during the “Innovation in Urban
Transport” Conference in Graz, Austria, ELTIS, the European
Local Transport Information Service was launched
by DG TREN.
Now, ten years later, ELTIS has celebrated its 10th anniversary.
To mark the occasion ELTIS has rewarded
selected users for their active involvement. Ilie Cretu and Ioana Mihailescu from the Romanian City of Sibiu
received the ELTIS Award for the submission of case study N° 1,000 and Szilvia Zsargo from Budapest
received the Award for active participation in the ELTIS User Association. European Commission Policy
Officer Marcel Rommerts presented the awards at a ceremony during the CIVITAS FORUM in Bologna.
Over the past three years ELTIS has developed rapidly. Since the beginning of 2006 the number of case
studies has increased by ca. 300% to currently more than 1,320. Instead of having on average 1-10 news
items / month, ELTIS now provides 1 per day. The users appreciate this development. The download numbers
clearly demonstrate the fact that more and more people are using ELTIS. By the middle of 2008 the
magic target of 300,000 requests/hits / month was reached and we’re still counting.
It is a pleasure to provide, free of charge, all the materials of ELTIS (many in a wide range of languages)
for downloading from our website, www.eltis.org. Whenever possible, it makes sense for practitioners and
researchers to use existing knowledge. Why re-invent the wheel? We hope that the news and information,
teaching and training materials, case studies (with content on measures and campaigns and their results)
and tools for practitioners available on ELTIS will be reflected in future local policies and strategies. Interested
parties are most welcome to submit their own case studies and results to feed into the enormous
data base of Europe’s N° 1 information platform on urban transport.

Concerns about Urban Freight and its role in
transport systems, are quite recent. There are few
methodological approaches and design tools in this
domain but a large bunch of experimentations and
demonstrations realised in various cities. Experience
sharing and explained show cases are then
the most efficient way for transferring knowledge; in
this way the ELTIS platform is a powerful tool to help
Local Transport Authorities and their associates to
design and to implement adequate solutions as well

ELTIS is a rich source of good ideas and examples of

other presented cases and to share our own experience
and hopefully support other communities.
ELTIS has also helped us to connect to other local communities
and made us part of a larger European network
of towns and transport-related institutions. We rely on

We hope to contribute even more in its excellent results
and wish its team many successful decades of excellent
