<strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Fixture</strong> <strong>System</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>jobber</strong> <strong>drills</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>tools</strong> <strong>with</strong><br />
<strong>short</strong> functional length<br />
The <strong>Nova</strong> fixture system offers the best economy of all <strong>4pvd</strong> fixture systems <strong>for</strong><br />
rotating substrates, which basically have to be coated on one tip mainly (<strong>drills</strong>, mills,<br />
punches, taps, countersinks, etc.).<br />
In <strong>Nova</strong> fixtures the tips of the substrates are oriented directly to the evaporators. So<br />
these tips receive the highest <strong>de</strong>position rate. Besi<strong>de</strong> of this no other fixtures system<br />
can fit in as many substrates into the coating area. As the substrates themselves do<br />
not rotate in the <strong>Nova</strong> fixtures, this system is very simple, cheap, <strong>and</strong> reliable <strong>and</strong> has<br />
very long maintenance intervals.<br />
<strong>Nova</strong> fixture <strong>with</strong> twisted <strong>drills</strong><br />
<strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Fixture</strong>s can be used successfully, if the following conditions are met:<br />
The PVD process can achieve sufficient adhesion <strong>and</strong> colour uni<strong>for</strong>mity over<br />
all the coating length.<br />
The diameter of the loa<strong>de</strong>d fixture is larger than 2,5 times the over all length of<br />
the substrate.<br />
The quantity of substrates <strong>de</strong>livered <strong>with</strong> each or<strong>de</strong>r is high enough to fill at<br />
least one module completely.<br />
<strong>4pvd</strong> offers two st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>de</strong>signs of <strong>Nova</strong> modules. For relatively small geometries e.<br />
g. twisted <strong>drills</strong> up to 6,0mm diameter full circle modules (as shown above) are<br />

preferred. These are loa<strong>de</strong>d directly onto the substrate table or its planetary drives (if<br />
their size is big enough).<br />
For larger substrates the full circle is divi<strong>de</strong>d into four or more segments, which than<br />
look like the image below.<br />
<strong>Nova</strong> Quart module <strong>with</strong> <strong>drills</strong> d=11mm<br />
Full circle modules are simply stacked on a rod in the centre of the substrate table or<br />
the planet. Quart modules require a special base jig to be loa<strong>de</strong>d on the substrate<br />
table. Some base jigs are shown at the end of this chapter.<br />
<strong>Nova</strong> Quart base jigs<br />
With the right peripheral equipment nova fixtures may also be used <strong>for</strong> cleaning <strong>and</strong><br />
shipping of the substrates. We may consult you on the way to realize this matter.<br />
The next pages show some exemplary <strong>Nova</strong> modules.<br />
These dimensions are common <strong>for</strong> all st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>Nova</strong> modules: Module height is<br />
100mm, upwards tilt of the substrate axis is 15°. From the data on the next pages<br />
you can get the other main data of these modules as the quantities of substrates per<br />
module or the distance from tip to tip (s1 – s2)<br />

The <strong>Nova</strong> Bar system can be helpful <strong>for</strong> the sampling process <strong>for</strong> new products <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong> special <strong>tools</strong> in small quantities. Like the other <strong>Nova</strong> modules it consists of a base<br />
jig which can be filled <strong>with</strong> little cartridges. The new thing is that the <strong>Nova</strong> Bar base<br />
jig can be mounted on a substrate table instead of a planetary drive. This allows you<br />
to run samples or special <strong>tools</strong> in the orientation of <strong>Nova</strong> fixtures together <strong>with</strong> your<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ard loads. As the image below shows, you may also use this fixture system to<br />
load only a few oversized <strong>tools</strong> together <strong>with</strong> your st<strong>and</strong>ard products in one batch.<br />
<strong>Nova</strong> Bar base jig <strong>with</strong> different modules <strong>and</strong> <strong>tools</strong><br />
<strong>Nova</strong> Bar offers a very high flexibility <strong>for</strong> the coating of different diameters <strong>and</strong> length.<br />
At the same time it can be used to increase the utilization of your PVD furnace even<br />
<strong>with</strong> smallest or<strong>de</strong>r lines. Furthermore the <strong>Nova</strong> Bar system is pretty simple, very<br />
robust <strong>and</strong> available at low investment cost.<br />
The <strong>Nova</strong> Bar system can be combined in one batch together <strong>with</strong> other fixtures<br />
systems, because it occupies the space of one or more satellites. Other than all the<br />
other fixture systems the <strong>Nova</strong> Bar system can increase the utilization of the coating<br />
zone if mixed products have to be coated.<br />
The cartridges <strong>for</strong> substrates are clipped into the <strong>Nova</strong> Bar base jigs. One base jig<br />
can take one to three cartridges in each level. The <strong>de</strong>sign of the cartridges is very<br />
simple <strong>and</strong> they are cheap <strong>and</strong> can be <strong>de</strong>livered quickly.<br />

<strong>Nova</strong> Bar modules are hanged up onto the <strong>Nova</strong> Bar base jigs. The modules are first filled <strong>with</strong> the<br />
fixture tubes <strong>and</strong> substrates. Substrates may be plugged into the modules directly. If masking of the<br />
shank area is requested, tubes or your st<strong>and</strong>ard fixture tubes can be plugged into the modules. The<br />
axles of the substrates are tilt upwards by 15° to avoid the substrate changing their positions.<br />
Substrate or tubes are fixed in the modules <strong>with</strong> a spring, but they can be shifted along the axle in the<br />
module. Additionally the module can be placed into different positions in the base jig. With this one<br />
module can take substrates of a total length from 50mm up to 200mm. The quantity of modules per<br />
