Born in 1948 in Latvian. Painter.<br />

She currently lives and works in Riga.<br />

At a young age she moved to Riga from the Latvian countrysi<strong>de</strong> to study painting, first at the Jānis Rozentāls Art High School<br />

and then at the Latvian Aca<strong>de</strong>my of Art.<br />

Career<br />

In the 1970s she and Miervaldis Polis started a new trend of photorealism in Latvian painting. Although painting is the<br />

primary field of the artist’s creative activity; she has practiced also graphics and stage <strong>de</strong>sign. Līga Purmalewas was stage<br />

<strong>de</strong>signer for Petr Tchaikovsky’s ballet «Swan Lake» (2002) and A<strong>do</strong>lphe Adam’s ballet «Le Corsaire» (2003) at the Latvian<br />

National Opera.<br />

Līga Purmale’s works are inclu<strong>de</strong>d in the collections of the State Museum of Art (Riga), the Artists’ Union of Latvia Museum<br />

(Riga), the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), the KIāvs Sīpoliņš Foundation (Canada), Ainars Gulbis privat collection and<br />

other private collections in Latvia and abroad, Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University (USA).<br />
