YEATS EN_ ONE DAY IN early fall, Sue Sirrs, our APALA editorial board rep and principal of Outside! Planning & Design Studio, cycled over to take a few late season picture of THE WALL, the 93 m 2 (1000 ft 2 ) living wall installed in the spring of 2010 at Nova Scotia Community College. How had it fared after two summers and one gruelling winter facing the worst weather Halifax had to off er? As Sue snapped away, a bird landed on the wall. “It sang its little heart out,” she said, “and I was overwhelmed…It had worked!” Sue’s story, which is told in more detail on page 13, illustrates our winter theme, well understood by every LA: dreams can indeed become lush realities, if our dreaming is coupled with a hard look at what those diffi cult dreams demand. Sue’s story also bears testimony to a lesser known dream, which is front and centre as we begin production of each new issue of LP magazine. We dream BIG, but it can be an arduous journey from the blank page to a publication that is rich and meaningful. Sometimes, as happened this issue when our Guest Editor had to withdraw, our early plans are derailed by life. For the CSLA Editorial Board, this was just another reason to get creative. You’ll meet many of our regional reps in this issue: Andrew Burton Anderson whose dreams of frankincense and sustainability took him to the cloud forests of Dhofar; Ryan James whose admiration for Neil Turnbull led him to explore the whys and wherefores of Hedgerow Farm; Ron Middleton who found wonder in Pangnirtung; Juliette Patterson who earned a competition victory against tall odds. And so many others worked behind the scenes: Wendy Graham, who painted our pages with exuberance, Natalie Walliser who prepped our translations for the Web, Peter Briggs, who kept our dreams on a budget. Each LP issue – each blank page – is another “sterile landscape” to be transformed, but the LP Editorial Board is a force to be reckoned with. By combining their knowledge and their networks, they showcase each region, translating our individual and collective dreams onto our pages. Our winter issue is full to overfl owing. FR_ AU DÉBUT DE L’AUTOMNE, Sue Sirrs, représentante de l’APALA au sein de notre rédaction et directrice chez Outside! Planning & Design Studio, a pédalé jusqu’au Nova Scotia Community College pour photographier le « mur vivant » de 93 m 2 (1000 pi 2 ) installé au printemps 2010. Quels eff ets avaient eu deux étés, un hiver, et certaines des plus pénibles températures qu’on puisse connaître à Halifax? Sue appuyait sur le déclencheur quand un oiseau s’est posé sur le mur. « Il gazouillait si fi èrement… comme pour couronner le projet! » Cette histoire, racontée à la page 13, illustre bien le thème de ce numéro d’hiver, un thème cher aux AP : nos rêves peuvent devenir réalité, pour peu qu’on anticipe les obstacles avec lucidité. Les membres de la rédaction rêvent eux aussi... Ce n’est pas l’ambition qui manque; mais le parcours qui mène d’un amas de feuilles blanches à une publication éloquente est semé d’embûches. La vie nous réserve des surprises, et en l’occurrence, notre rédacteur invité a dû se retirer. Notre comité, loin de se laisser abattre, a alors décidé de faire preuve d’encore plus de créativité. Vous aurez donc la chance de rencontrer dans ces pages plusieurs représentants régionaux : Andrew Burton Anderson, dont les rêves écolos étaient parfumés à l’encens, et qui s’est aventuré dans les forêts du Dhofar; Ryan James, qu’une admiration pour Neil Turnbull a fait tracer un portrait de la ferme Hedgerow; Ron Middleton, qui s’est émerveillé à Pangnirtung; Juliette Patterson, qui s’est surprise à remporter une compétition… Sans compter nos comparses en coulisse : Wendy Graham, qui a coloré nos pages avec entrain, et Peter Briggs, qui a habilement jonglé avec le budget. Chaque page blanche est un « paysage stérile » à transformer. Mais nos rédacteurs et collaborateurs ne manquent pas d’inspiration. En usant de leurs connaissances et de leurs réseaux, ils nous font découvrir des horizons, et bercent nos rêves, à la fois individuels et collectifs. Des occasions de rêver, ce numéro hivernal – comme chaque numéro – en off re à profusion. WINTER HIVER 2012 7
