experiences spacetime as distances between objects and the passing of time.
That is not the worst description. The physicist must be a bit more detailed since
he wants to perform calculations, explain experiments, and predict the results of
new experiments.
Spacetime is four dimensional. It is curved - there are no straight lines
since gravity is present everywhere in the universe. It can twist – this is the new
point that using Cartan geometry in Evans spacetime adds. It has distances from
one point to another. A variety of actions can occur within it.
“The vacuum” is a related concept. In quantum mechanics the vacuum
refers to the mostly empty space surrounding particles. The Minkowski
spacetime is a mathematical construct and Evans defines it as the vacuum. We
also use the word vacuum (without “the”) to mean the very low density space
between planets and suns.
The use of mathematics to define the spacetime of our everyday universe
for calculations leads to defining spacetime itself as that mathematics. (One of
these may be a chicken or an egg.) Einstein clearly stated that physics is
geometry. Evans has echoed him. We can see the logic in the idea. Lacking
any concrete definition of spacetime, we use that which is most appropriate -
geometry. Until such time comes that someone finds a better underlying
concept, we must tentatively accept the idea that spacetime is geometry.
Unified field theory again requires revision of the existing concept of
spacetime just as Einstein twice revised it. Einstein added a dimension for
special relativity; then he added curvature for general relativity. Evans adds spintorsion
for unified field theory. We will see how Evans uncovers how the forces
are related to the spacetime. This starts on the very small scale of the particle
and vacuum and can go all the way to black holes and galaxies.
The Four Forces
Physics recognizes four forces which are depicted in Figure I -4.
