The ’80s<br />
Lawrence E. McKinney ’87 died<br />
June 12, 2010. He held degrees<br />
in education from Indiana State<br />
University and Indiana University<br />
and earned an endorsement in<br />
Canadian studies from <strong>Franklin</strong><br />
<strong>College</strong> in 1987. He worked many<br />
years as a South Bend Schools<br />
administrator and after retirement<br />
became a field supervisor<br />
for the education program at<br />
<strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>College</strong>. His memberships<br />
included the Retired<br />
Teachers Association, the<br />
Exchange Club and Phi Delta<br />
Kappa. He was a Branigin<br />
Scholar. Several years ago, Carole<br />
McKinney, associate adjunct<br />
professor of education at<br />
<strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>College</strong>, along with her<br />
husband, Larry, and friend Mary<br />
Ann Collier, a <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
Trustee, established the Collier-<br />
McKinney Endowed Scholarship<br />
for students majoring in education.<br />
The scholarship honors<br />
Lawrence and his wife, Helen, as<br />
well as the parents of Carole and<br />
Mary Ann. Lawrence’s survivors<br />
include Helen, three sons and<br />
nine grandchildren. He was a<br />
resident of Columbus, Ind.<br />
The ’90s<br />
Jennifer L. (Carr) Merchant ’99<br />
died June 20, 2010. She was a<br />
kindergarten teacher at Stephen<br />
Foster Elementary School in<br />
Indianapolis. She also was a<br />
member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.<br />
Survivors include her husband,<br />
Jeffrey, and a son. She was a<br />
resident of Brownsburg, Ind.<br />
Friends of<br />
<strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
Alice A. Carr died June 23, 2010.<br />
She was employed as a librarian<br />
at <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>College</strong> for 15 years,<br />
retiring in 1978. She enjoyed<br />
knitting, reading, gardening,<br />
traveling and Bible study. She<br />
was a member of Community<br />
Congregational Church and<br />
taught Sunday School. Survivors<br />
include a son, William, his wife,<br />
Barbara (McKinney) Carr ’68, a<br />
daughter, Marjorie (Carr) Ridley<br />
’71 and three grandchildren. She<br />
was a resident of <strong>Franklin</strong>, Ind.<br />
Charles C. Cash died July 16,<br />
2010. He remembered <strong>Franklin</strong><br />
<strong>College</strong> in his estate plans. While<br />
he had no known family ties to<br />
the college, Charles indicated he<br />
supported <strong>Franklin</strong> because it<br />
“is a good business college.”<br />
In 1980, he started Mr.’s<br />
Minimanykey Barn after taking<br />
the Foley-Belsaw locksmithing<br />
correspondence course. Charles<br />
owned and operated the business<br />
in Crothersville until moving to<br />
Shelbyville in 2006. He was always<br />
intrigued with furthering his<br />
knowledge, and he earned<br />
numerous certificates for courses<br />
completed in subjects that<br />
ranged from effective speech<br />
salesmanship and business<br />
accounting to beekeeping and<br />
computer technology. He was<br />
preceded in death by his wife,<br />
Zelma. Survivors include several<br />
nieces and nephews. He was a<br />
resident of Shelbyville, Ind.<br />
Carol Bush Hunt died June 30,<br />
2010. She was a friend of<br />
<strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>College</strong> through the<br />
American Baptist Association.<br />
She was an elementary school<br />
teacher for more than 40 years<br />
and taught in the <strong>Franklin</strong> (Ind.)<br />
Community School Corp. at<br />
Needham Elementary School for<br />
27 years. She was preceded in<br />
death by her first husband, the<br />
Rev. Stanley G. Bush, who was<br />
active in the American Baptist<br />
Churches USA and pastor of<br />
Second Mount Pleasant Baptist<br />
Church in Johnson County,<br />
Ind., for 26 years. To honor the<br />
couple’s passion for education<br />
and the greater <strong>Franklin</strong><br />
community, their son, Sam Bush,<br />
and his wife, Alaine, established<br />
the Stanley G. and Carol D.<br />
Bush Endowed Scholarship<br />
for students at <strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
several years ago. Survivors<br />
include her husband, Thurston,<br />
three sons and seven grandchildren.<br />
She was a resident of<br />
Indianapolis.<br />
Gordon L. McClure Sr. died<br />
Oct. 12, 2010. Gordon was the<br />
head of campus security at<br />
<strong>Franklin</strong> <strong>College</strong> for several years,<br />
and after retirement he worked<br />
for the Johnson County Sheriff’s<br />
office. He also was retired from<br />
the U.S. Marine Corps and the<br />
U.S. Army. He served two tours in<br />
Vietnam and was a Purple Heart<br />
recipient. Survivors include his<br />
wife, Cathy, a daughter, a son<br />
and four grandchildren. He was<br />
a resident of Greenwood, Ind.<br />
Charlotte West died July 8, 2010.<br />
She was married to former<br />
trustee Arch West ’36, inventor<br />
of Doritos® chips; he survives.<br />
Charlotte was active in several<br />
civic organizations, including the<br />
Farmer’s Branch Women’s<br />
League and North Dallas Shared<br />
Ministries. She was a founder and<br />
active member of Ridgeview<br />
Presbyterian Church. For many<br />
years, Charlotte and Arch served<br />
as FEMA reservists, traveling<br />
widely to assist people stricken by<br />
disasters. The couple also were<br />
faithful supporters of the college’s<br />
<strong>Franklin</strong> Fund for<br />
Scholarships. In addition to<br />
Arch, other survivors include<br />
three sons, a daughter, 12 grandchildren<br />
and six great-grandchildren.<br />
