Frustrated by low CD rates?
Charitable gift annuities offer prudent alternative
By Tom Armor
Director of Advancement and Leadership Giving
Secure and stable payments, income tax deductions, partial bypass of capital gains tax,
possible reduction of estate taxes — these and other benefits may make a Franklin
College gift annuity a prudent option for you right now.
You may want to compare your current CD rate with a more favorable financial option,
the charitable gift annuity. The national average rate for a one-year CD is currently at
approximately .80 percent. With a Franklin College gift annuity, you not only receive the
satisfaction of helping to further the mission of the college, you receive annuity payments
for the rest of your life at rates that are considerably higher than current CD rates.
For example, Mary is 80 years old and would qualify for a 7.2 percent rate on a charitable gift
annuity. This is over 6 percent more than the rate she would receive with a CD. In addition, when
one considers the income tax-savings and the tax-free payout from the gift annuity, the effective rate
may be 9 or 10 percent.
Age 1-year CD rate Gift Annuity rate Difference
65 .80% 5.5% +4.7%
70 .80% 5.8% +5%
75 .80% 6.4% +5.6%
80 .80% 7.2% +6.4%
85 .80% 8.1% +7.3%
Market volatility of recent years has generated concern over rapid changes in equitiy
values. A second factor you may want to take into consideration is the fixed payout and
the security of the charitable gift annuity. The gift annuity is a contract with Franklin
College, and is secured by the annuity reserve fund, the unrestricted endowment and
generally all of the assets of the college. With this level of security and stability, those
who are tired of market volatility and market risk may be very interested in charitable
gift annuities.
There’s something else our gift annuity donors receive - membership in the Franklin
College Horizon Society. This special group of forward thinking people partner with us
in planning for the future. Their gift annuities and other planned gifts let us know that
vital resources will be available to help Franklin College fulfill its mission and serve the
next generation.
