Grotz acknowledged that much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world's<br />

mainstream scientific community doubts <strong>the</strong><br />

claims made by Tesla fans like himself and<br />

Beaden.<br />

"But," he added, "Tesla always was rejected by<br />

<strong>the</strong> establishment."<br />

After Tesla began building AC dynamos, motors<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r devices with financial backing from<br />

Westinghouse, Edison and his General Electric<br />

Company waged a campaign to discredit AC by<br />

emphasizing its dangers, according "to Tesla<br />

biographer Margaret Cheney in her "Tesla, Man<br />

Out <strong>of</strong> Time."<br />

Edison would force dogs and cats to stand on<br />

steel plates energized by AC current and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

throw a switch, electrocuting <strong>the</strong>m. He called <strong>the</strong><br />

process "Westinghousing," Cheney wrote.<br />

Ultimately Tesla lost out to Edison and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

foes, even though his AC power system<br />

prevailed.<br />

The visionary died in 1943 in a New York hotel<br />

room he shared with several pigeons that he considered<br />

his only friends, <strong>the</strong> biographer said.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> war, Tesla's relatives in Yugoslavia<br />

petitioned Washington to receive 17 trunks <strong>of</strong><br />

papers and laboratory equipment that he had<br />

stored in a New York garage.<br />

In 1952 <strong>the</strong>se items were sent to Belgrade where<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are housed in a Tesla museum.<br />

But, said Grotz, "What do you suppose are <strong>the</strong><br />

chances that everything was first copied by <strong>the</strong><br />

KGB?"<br />

"In <strong>the</strong> USA we don't even give him credit for<br />

inventing '<strong>the</strong> radio and <strong>the</strong> Soviet bloc is<br />

building Tesla museums," said <strong>the</strong> engineer.<br />

"Why do <strong>the</strong>y respect him so much?"
