City distributes water
The City of Austin, led by Councilwoman
Laura Morrison and supported by the Austin
Water Utility, teamed up with Mobile
Loaves and Fishes, a social outreach ministry
for the homeless and indigent working
poor, June 25 to distribute bottles of water
to those in need.
Austin/Travis County Emergency Medical
Services has responded to 37 heat-related
emergencies during days with 100-plus degree
temperatures since June 12.
“In times of extreme temperatures, the
body loses fluids and electrolytes. These fluids
must be replaced to avoid heat exhaustion
or heat stroke,” said Dr. Philip Huang,
Austin/Travis County Health and Human
Services medical director.
Mobile Loaves and Fishes provides food,
clothing and dignity to people in need.
The nonprofit utilizes a force of thousands
of volunteers to make nightly deliveries
throughout Austin. For more information,

Lease renewed with Film Society
Austin City Council voted to renew a lease
agreement with the Austin Film Society for
more than 20 acres of land at the city’s former
airport. The lease renewal, approved in
a June meeting, enables the film society to
continue using the former Robert Mueller
Municipal Airport for studio complexes.

the city and film society first entered a lease
agreement in 2000. The lease calls for the
premises to be used as a studio complex for
the production of films, television programs,
commercials and multimedia productions.
Under the agreement, the film society
pays the city $100 per year and, in lieu of fair
market rental, AFS finds film, television and
multimedia companies to house at the site.
Council members also added an amendment
that the film society cannot grant any
sublease without council approval, if that
sublease requires more than $50,000 in cumulative
improvements.
Art guitars donated to city
Austin resident and businessman Milton
Verret is donating eight of the original “Big
Guitars” to the City of Austin. Verret purchased
the “Big Guitars” at auction in October
2007 during GuitarTown, a gala event to
raise money for several Austin charities.
For more than a year before the auction,
the guitars were displayed throughout the
city at various Austin locations. Gibson
Guitars commissioned them all and were
decorated by local artists as part of the
temporary exhibit Austin GuitarTown.

Auction totaled $120,000 of the
more than $589,000 paid to four Austin
area charities: Health Alliance for Austin
Musicians, Austin Museum of Art,
American YouthWorks and the Austin

“From the moment I saw the guitars on
display in Austin, I started working on a
way to keep them here, in the Live Music
Capital of the World,” Verret said.
Verret worked with the city to have the
guitars exhibited at city hall before the official
donation ceremony.
Mayor Will Wynn accepted the “Big Guitars”
on behalf of the city during the mayor’s
final city council meeting June 18. The “Big
Guitars” will remain on display at city hall
until they are moved to their permanent
Austin locations this summer.
