The Warriors hammered Central 47-29 on Thursday night in Carter County middle school basketball action on Warrior Hill. Happy Valley surged to an early 8-0 advantage and led by 25 through three quarters. “I thought we attacked the zone defense a lot better tonight,” Happy Valley coach Dan Carder said. “We’ve not been as successful against the zone, but we really attacked it tonight. I thought our guys really took good shots, and we moved the ball really good. “Our on the press I think bothered them a little bit. I’m not saying our defense is good transition, but defensively we got them out of the game right there in the first half.” Hunter Nave gunned in 15 points to pace the Warriors (8- 4). Paige Dugger led Hampton in scoring by finishing with eleven points, while Dorothy Dugger and Martin both added seven apiece. “Brittany Marvel is a big part of our offense, and I’m not saying if we would have had her at the end that we would have won, but it would have been close,” said Little Milligan coach Ginny White. “We also missed a lot of free-throws there at the end, and if we would have hit them then we could have still been in the game there at the end.” Little Milligan JV Girls- 15 Hampton JV Girls- 30 It was a good start for the Hampton JV Girls against Little Milligan, as a first quarter rout ended up leading to a 30-15 final over the Buffaloes. Hampton jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with Paige Dugger posting six points and Megan Lynch adding four. Makayla Payne connected on six out of eight of the ‘Dogs second quarter points to enjoy a 22-6 lead at the half. Little Milligan received a three-point goal from Kourtney Tolley during the third period, while she led the Buffaloes in scoring with five points. Hampton held a 28-11 lead by the end of the third quarter, as the Buffaloes were unable to make up any ground during the final period. College Thursday night. With the win, the Buffaloes improve to 10-4 on the season and remain tied for second place in the conference with a 4-1 AAC record while Bryan falls to 1-4 in the AAC and 2-12 overall. Leading the way for Milligan was sophomore Jeff Barnes with his 20 points and eight rebounds. Senior forward Adrian Harrison added 15 points and grabbed six rebounds while Serge Babo blocked two shots to go with his seven rebounds in the win. The next game for Milligan is Saturday afternoon against AAC foe Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Ga. with a 4 p.m. scheduled tip off. Women Bryan 77 Milligan 65 Donovan Grindstaff. “We didn’t play with the intensity that we normally play with,” Central coach Lamont Barnett said “I know that this is a big rivalry for us, and I think to start with we came out flat. We got behind. We tried to change a few things to help us out, and we just didn’t execute like we normally do at either end of the floor. “Our defense is usually our strength, and that fell apart a little bit. That kind of had a little effect on our offense.” Carder said this is the breakout game Nave has been on the brink of. Nave scored nine in the third quarter, when Happy Valley extended its cushion from 22-7 to 39-14. “We’ve been waiting for that,” Carder said. “He’s a guy that we count on a lot. He’s our biggest guy, our center, and we need that kind of game out of him. He really attacked the goal today, beat them down the floor and got position.” It was 10-3 heading in the second quarter. Woods scored cuted to mere perfection during the second-half to pull away from Little Milligan in a 44-21 final. The Buffaloes were able to keep the game close during the first ten minutes of action, but the ‘Dogs defense overwhelmed them late in the contest. Hampton held a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter after a couple of nice passes from Spencer Nave to Austin Clawson and Tyler Trusler. “Spencer Nave did a good job of passing the ball and so did Matt Waldrop,” said Hampton JV boys coach Joe Street. “Our point-guards did played well by getting their heads up and looking ahead for the pass.” Clawson led the ‘Dogs in scoring by finishing with 12 points, while Nave added eight with six assist. Little Milligan threaten to take the lead after a couple of free-throws by James Hassett to pull the Buffaloes to within one-point with four minutes left in the half. The ‘Dogs went on an 11-2 run during the last two minutes f the first-half to take a 25-15 lead by half-time. The Hampton defense shut down the Buffaloes on offense, as they held them to only six points during the second-half. “Little Milligan beat us in the tournament at the first of the year, but the boys came out and played really well,” said Street. “We played good defense and broke the press to get some easy buckets.” DAYTON, TN— The Milligan College women’s basketball team suffered a 77-65 loss Thursday evening at the hands of No. 12 Bryan College. This was the first AAC contest for Milligan since December 8. With the results, Milligan now holds a 5-7 overall record and a 2-3 conference record while Bryan moves to 5-0 within the conference and 12-4 overall. Sophomores Rikki Baughman and Leah Anderson each scored a team-high 17 points for Milligan Thursday night. Anderson also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds while Kara Monk added 12 points off the bench in the contest. The Lady Buffs will return to action Saturday afternoon at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Ga. The AAC match up is scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m. Women ETSU 71 Lipscomb 51 JOHNSON CITY— All 12 ETSU players saw action four in the second period as the Warriors went up by 15. McKinney and Edards grabbed five rebounds each. Bowling came up with three steals, while Edwards and Gouge made two each. The Warriors were 3 of 5 on free throws. (AP) — Joe Ross Merritt scored a game-high 17 points to lead Samford to a 55-41 victory over Tennessee-Martin Thursday night. Samford (8-6, 5-0 Ohio Valley Conference) turned in its best defensive performance so far this season, limiting Tennessee-Martin (3-13, 1-5) to its lowest scoring game this season. “We won the game, but we definitely won it ugly,” Samford head coach Jimmy Tillette said. “I have to give a lot of credit to Tennessee- Martin. We played well defensively, especially against them, because they have a very physical basketball team.” The Bulldogs held Tennessee-Martin to 35.7 percent shooting from the field. Samford finished with 47.7 percent from the floor. Travis Peterson and Randall Gulina both scored 13 points for Samford. Peterson finished with a team- high five rebounds, while senior Jerry Smith added four assists. The Bulldogs led 26-18 at halftime.
