The Elizabethton High
School Wrestling team can
now add the title of Region I
Small School Champions to
the list of their accomplishments
so far this season.
The Cyclones defeated
Union County High School
48-21 on Thursday evening at
Treadway Gymnasium to
claim the championship.
The victory moves Elizabethton
to 14-6 on the season
and it also qualifies the Cyclones
for the Sectional Tournament
which will be held at
Seymour High School.
“I was real happy with the
kids tonight. They performed
well,” said Cyclones coach
Bill Potter. “We had a good
practice yesterday where they
worked real hard and they
came out tonight and responded
well.
The match kicked off with
the 140 lb. weight class grapplers
and Knox Enyasa got
Elizabethton off to a good
start by pinning Union Coun-
ty’s Jordan Naylor in 3:09.
However, the Patriots answered
with three straight
victories in the 145 lb., 152 lb.
and 160 lb. weight classes.
Dillion Collins pinned
Chris Hubbard at 145 in 3:36.
Matt Collins followed that up
by pinning Justin McMillian
in 0:41 and then Chad Alverson
beat Zeke Cornett by a
minor decision to give Union
County a 15-6 lead.
Cyclones 171-pounder
Josh Richardson pinned
Spencer Keck in 1:50 and 189pounder
Zach Coggins won
by forfeit to allow Elizabethton
to regain the lead at 18-15.
The Patriots took the lead
for the last time at 21-18 when
Frankie Morgan, who won
the state championship in the
189 lb. class last season but is
wrestling 215 this year,
pinned Nick Papantoniou in
1:18.
Elizabethton got wins in
the last five matches to pull
away from Union City.
Zach Potter won by forfeit
in the 285 and under class.
119-pounder Andrew
Richardson pinned Tyler
Moyers in a quick 1:18.
“Andrew and Josh
Richardson both looked good
tonight,” said Coach Potter.
“Andrew has really come
along and Josh has a real
good season going.”
After Brandon Woodby
won by forfeit at 125 lbs., Dalton
Williams and Steven
Pierce recorded pins in the
130 lb. and 135 lb. weight
classes, respectively, to close
out the match.
Williams pinned Eric
Brown in a mere 0:54 seconds
while Pierce took down
Christian Marlow in 2:45.
Elizabethton has several
matches scheduled before
they take part in the sectionals
at Seymour.
The first of those dates is
on Saturday when the Cyclones
travel to Smyrna High
School to compete in an individual
tournament that will
feature wrestlers from 16 different
schools.
“I am looking forward to
this weekend,” said Coach
Potter. “I think we have several
kids that will do pretty
well down there.”
Twilley’s last second heroics
lifts ETSU past Lipscomb in OT
JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee
State freshman point
guard Dequan Twilley partly
contributed to a Buccaneer loss
in overtime against Belmont
earlier this week. He bobbled
the basketball and struggled to
find open shooters in the final
five minutes of regulation.
The extra period didn’t faze
him Thursday.
Three freshmen played like
seniors and the Bucs overcame
their overtime jitters with a last
second trey from Twilley to
topple Lipscomb 75-72 at
Memorial Center.
With State’s two leading defenders
Andrew Reed and
Eryk Thomas out of the game
with five fouls, freshmen Twilley,
Mike Smith and Blake
Mishler lifted the young Bucs
over an experienced Bison
team favored to finish in the
top two of the Atlantic Sun this
season.
“Those freshmen didn’t
play like freshmen,” said ETSU
coach Murry Bartow. “Those
guys made plays.”
With free throws spoiling
State’s party Tuesday night,
Smith and Mishler came
though in the clutch with a
pair of singles each down the
stretch.
The Bucs (9-7, 3-1 A-Sun)
led by three before Lipscomb’s
Eddie Ard drilled a three with
under a minute left.
A turnover by Nuckles appeared
to spell doom for the
home team. On the other end
of the floor, however, Brian
Hunter takes two from Unaka Rangers
It was suppose to be basketball
but WWF Wrestling
couldn’t have been more entertaining
than Thursday’s
Junior High game at Unaka
Elementary School. The
Hunter boys were heavily favored
but Unaka didn’t back
down. The Tigers managed a
hard fought 52-30 win inside
the Stoney Creek Cracker box
over their community rival.
The Rangers of coach Don
Parkey stood toe-to-toe with
Hunter and actually led 8-7
after one. Baskets from Derrick
Wilson and John Harding
helped erase a 3-0 Tiger advantage.
Devin Aldridge and Zack
Naylor put Hunter back in
front but a nice move by Wilson
gave the Rangers a one
point advantage.
The lead ballooned at 15-9
on a three by Hardin and a
bucket from Zack Wudarcki.
Two layups off steals from
Josh Peterson pulled Hunter
within one then Jordan Taylor
gave them the lead with a
put-back underneath.
Unaka led 19-16 but
Hunter’s full court press accounted
for the next eight
points putting the Tigers in
front to stay. Taylor provided
the second quarter offense
with eight while Peterson
dropped in six.
Weston Colbaugh stopped
the run by connecting from
the corner still Hunter led 28-
21 at intermission.
Unaka failed to make a
field goal during the third as
Hunter outscored them 12-3.
Fisk missed a long ball and
Mishler delivered a clutch rebound.
Following a timeout, State
struggled to find an open shot
as time wound down. Courtney
Pigram spotted Twilley beyond
the arch and the Shel-
Elizabethton’s Josh Richardson tries to escape from the grasp of Union City’s Spencer Keck.
Richardson pinned Keck in 1:50 during the Regional match at Treadway Gymnasium on
Thursday evening.
Four points each by Taylor
and Justin Nave extended the
margin to 15 then Naylor’s
bucket in the final minute
gave the Tigers a 17-point
cushion after three.
The game got ugly in the
fourth with two technicals
fouls being assessed against
Hunter yet the “Hatfields and
McCoys” continued play.
Naylor provided five points
for Hunter while Hardin duplicated
the feat for Unaka including
a long three at the
After officially being
named this week as the
Hampton Jr. High girls head
coach for the remainder of
the season, Kari Stout had
the task of facing Little Milligan
in her first debut.
It was a success for the
new Lady ‘Dogs coach who
got plenty of support off the
bench to come away with a
39-29 final.
“I was a little nervous
coming in for I’ve played
ball for 14 years and now
starting to coach and wanting
to learn,” said Stout. “All
of a sudden now it’s a head
coaching job, so I never really
got the opportunity to
learn. I’m just working on
what I know and going over
drills in practice and doing
the best I can just to help
these girls.” “I’m really excited
about being the head
coach, but also a little nervous.
Hampton trailed by onepoint
at the end of the first
period after Chelsey Weddle
poured in five of their seven
first quarter points.
Brittany Marvel provided
the spark for Little Milligan
by scoring six points during
the first quarter, including a
pair of free-throws with :05
seconds left.
The ‘Dogs trailed by three
in the first couple of minutes
of the second quarter before
going on a 10-2 run and taking
an 18-15 lead into the
half.
Hampton got a huge lift
from their bench which
played nearly all of the second
period to grab the momentum
before heading to
half-time.
byville-native drained the 26footer.
“First off, I wanted the oneone-one,”
Twilley said. “(During
the timeout) I told coach to
let me take it. When it left my
hands it felt pretty good.”
Buffalo stampede
“My bench has been playing
really well, and I’ve told
these girls that I don’t have
any five starters,” said Stout.
“Who ever works hard in
practice and hustles is who
will play.” “The bench really
stepped up for me tonight
and because of them we
won.”
A basket from Heather
Martin gave Hampton a five
point advantage to start the
third quarter, but the Buffaloes
responded by reeling
off the next eight points.
Back-to-back buckets
from Brittany Russell followed
by an outside shot
from Danielle Guinn who
finished with nine put Little
Milligan up 23-20 with 2:54
left during the third.
Hampton regained the
lead after scoring the last six
points of the period with two
free-throws coming from
Dorothy Dugger that gave
them a 26-23 lead heading
into the fourth.
The ‘Dogs struck first in
the final period with a bucket
down-low from Martin
and drive by Paige Dugger.
A three-point goal by
Guinn cut the deficit to four,
but the ‘Dogs full-court pressure
forced Little Milligan to
make several mistakes down
the stretch.
“We fell apart against the
press during the third and
fourth quarter there, and it
got us out of our game a little
bit,” said Little Milligan
coach Ginny White. “We
threw the ball away a few
times and then they got discourage
from that and it’s
hard to bounce back when
your confidence gets down.”
Marvel fouled out early in
the fourth finishing with 12
