Picasso’s tops list of 2006 favorites
After having enjoyed
many meals in a variety of
restaurants during 2006, I
thought I would look back
on some of the highlights before
moving ahead in 2007.
As always, these opinions
are based on a snapshot of
my reactions to a restaurant
during one or more visits. Also,
this column reflects only
the establishments I visited
last year.
Best Lunch Spots: I love a
great lunch place, and Elizabethton
boasts some of my
favorites, including The Coffee
Company and Michael’s
Annex in the Duck Crossing
Antique Mall. Another of my
favorite lunch spots, which I
don’t get to visit as often as I
would like, is Main Street
Café in downtown historic
Jonesborough. I would be remiss
if I didn’t also include
City Market of Elizabethton,
Mad Martha’s of Roan
Mountain and Cranberries of
Johnson City as honorable
mentions in this category.
These establishments serve
such creative lunch fare as
sandwiches, salads and
soups as well as some incredible
desserts.
Best Barbecue: I would
place Firehouse Restaurant
and Dixie Barbeque, both
Johnson City eateries, among
the best of the area’s eateries
catering to barbecue fans.
Two of my favorite side dishes
are served at these restaurants.
I love Firehouse’s
cheesy Hashbrown Casserole
and the smoky and sweet
Dixie Baked Beans at Dixie
Barbeque.
NEW YORK (AP) — Faced
with the need to replace Ed
Bradley in the middle of the
TV season, “60 Minutes”
won’t even bother.
His workload will be
spread around, and, in a
unique arrangement for the
CBS newsmagazine, his top
producer will run a reporting
unit for stories available to all
on-air correspondents.
“It’s a long-term project to
find the next full-time person
who can show the abilities that
are expected of a ‘60 Minutes’
correspondent,” said Jeff
Fager, the show’s executive
producer.
Even before Bradley’s
death on Nov. 9, it was a transition
year for TV’s longestrunning
newsmagazine. Mike
Wallace has retired, Morley
Safer has cut back his hours
and Dan Rather is gone. Katie
Couric and Anderson Cooper
are new contributors.
Bradley, who died at 65 of
leukemia, had only a year to
enjoy a status of first among
equals at the ensemble. His
was the first face shown during
the weekly introductions,
a subtle indication of status
that only Wallace had previously
achieved, and he was
gone before many even realized
it.
“He was the king,” said fellow
correspondent Bob Simon.
“He had the most authoritative
presence and style on the
broadcast and that’s not replaceable.”
Bradley also was an offscreen
leader at one of TV’s
most notorious dens of competition
and ego.
During the 1995 crisis that
became the subject of the
movie “The Insider,” when
“60 Minutes” caved to corporate
pressure and delayed a
tough report about tobacco
companies, “half the office
wasn’t talking to the other
half,” correspondent Lesley
Stahl recalled. Bradley
brought everyone to his apartment
and said he wouldn’t let
them leave until they thrashed
it out, she said.
“The reaction to Ed’s dying
was something I’d never
seen,” Stahl said. “I’ve been
around here a long time and
there was a quality of reaction
from the public that was personal
in a way I can’t explain
and everyone here has had the
same thing. We have all been
Best Mexican: El Patio in
Bristol and El Chico in Johnson
City remain two of my
favorite Mexican eateries.
These two restaurants offer
menus with slightly more
creative diversity than found
on most other menus at similar
restaurants. Azteca in Erwin
and El Torito in Elizabethton
deserve an honorable
mention.
Best Italian: Motz’s Italian
in Colonial Heights and
Crazy Tomato in Johnson
City both finished almost
even in my mind for the best
Italian meal I enjoyed in
2006.
Best Asian/Eastern: I fell
in love with two Korean
eateries in 2006 — Red Chili
located in downtown Elizabethton
and Pepper Heads
Cafe in Kingsport. In fact,
Red Chili ranks among my
best dining experiences of
last year and I am looking
forward to more visits in the
coming year. I want to give
an honorable mention to
Sahib, an Indian restaurant
that opened in Johnson City
last year. These restaurants
represent a welcome and
growing trend of acceptance
of tastes from around the
world.
flooded with e-mails.”
Steve Kroft inherits
Bradley’s slot as the first correspondent
whose face is shown
during the show’s introduction
(“I’m Steve Kroft ...”).
This, after all the years in
which he was rided as the
“new guy.”
“I think in some ways he
symbolizes ‘60 Minutes’ at its
best,” Fager said. “He is the
best reporter in the business
and you don’t get better in
terms of writing and reporting.
His stories are always
good. He doesn’t do clunkers.”
Kroft’s stories have led the
broadcast three times this season,
more than any other correspondent.
Over the past
year, he’s investigated human
growth hormones, illegal immigration,
Iraqi reconstruction
and organized crime in a small
town in Italy.
heavyweight champion
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone)
steps out of retirement
himself against a new rival
decades after his initial
glory. When a computer simulated
boxing match declares
Rocky Balboa the victor over
current champion Mason
“The Line” Dixon, the legendary
fighter’s passion and
spirit are reignited. But when
his desire to fight in small,
regional competitions is
trumped by promoters calling
for a rematch of the cyber-fight,
Balboa must weigh
the mental and physical risks
Best Chain Restaurant: I
only visited 11 chain restaurants
in 2006. Two of my favorites
are located in Elizabethton.
Applebee’s, which
opened in late 2005, and Lone
Star Steakhouse, which
opened in 2006, rank as two
of the best establishments
among chain restaurants
with locations in the area.
Best Fine Dining: Picasso’s
Fine Dining, a relatively
new restaurant in Johnson
City, won this category, but
the restaurant has some worthy
competition. House of
Ribs and Café Lola, both located
in Johnson City, provided
me with memorable meals
in 2006. Receiving well-deserved
honorable mentions in
this category are two other
Johnson City restaurants,
Russo’s and Four Winds Tea
Room.
Best Steaks: Many restaurants,
especially chain restaurants,
offer steaks. The Peerless
in Johnson City offers
some of the best prime cuts.
Diners won’t go wrong with
the Prime Rib at The Peerless,
which has been in operation
since 1938. Honorable mentions
in this category include
Logan’s Steakhouse of Johnson
City and Lone Star Steak-
Stahl has done a number of
political, science and business
stories, including her October
interviews with two high-profile
women who lost their corporate
jobs. Simon, who made
his way to a remote earthquake-ravaged
area in Pakistan
for a story on two New
Yorkers who were treating victims,
is trying to do more domestic
stories. Scott Pelley,
meanwhile, has done more international
work. Early in the
season, Couric did stories but
has largely concentrated on
the evening news since then.
Cooper, who will occasionally
contribute stories to “60 Minutes”
while staying at CNN,
debuted last month with a story
on the Abu Ghraib whistleblower.
None of the correspondents
interviewed expressed any
problem with doing a few
more stories this year; they’re
new barn, he begins a second
profound friendship with the
most unlikely of creatures —
a spider named Charlotte —
and their bond inspires the
animals around them to
come together as a family.
When the word gets out that
Wilbur’s days are numbered,
it seems that only a miracle
will save his life. A determined
Charlotte — who sees
miracles in the ordinary —
spins words into her web in
an effort to convince the
farmer that Wilbur is “some
pig” and worth saving. Rated
G. Starring: Dakota Fanning,
Julia Roberts, Oprah
Winfrey, Dominic Scott Kay
and John Cleese. Showtimes:
Daily: 1 and 3 p.m.
“NIGHT AT THE MUSE-
UM.” A good-hearted
often clamoring for airtime,
anyway. Fager’s ability to
spread time around was a particularly
delicate issue last season,
with Wallace active and
Rather joining the cast from
the “CBS Evening News.”
At the time he became seriously
ill, Bradley had left behind
no stories that his colleagues
will have to pick up
on.
Bradley’s sense of whimsy,
his cackle of a laugh, will be
remembered by all who heard
it. Like all “60 Minutes” correspondents,
he was a generalist
who would mix investigations
with softer features.
“The thing you reach for at
‘60 Minutes’ is to develop your
own voice, to be as much an
individual in the true sense of
yourself on camera,” Stahl
said. “Ed was able to show a
lot of parts of himself on camera
and not block it off.”
dreamer, Larry Daley, despite
being perpetually down
on his luck, thinks he’s destined
for something big. But
even he could never have
imagined how big, when he
accepts what appears to be a
menial job as a graveyardshift
security guard at a museum
of natural history. During
Larry’s watch, extraordinary
things begin to occur.
Amidst the chaos, the only
person Larry can turn to for
advice is a wax figure of
President Teddy Roosevelt,
who helps our hero harness
the bedlam, stop a nefarious
plot, and save the museum.
Rated PG. Starring: Ben
Best Family Dining: I decided
to let Bridges Café in
Elizabethton and Shirley’s
Home Cookin’ in Hampton
share honors in this category.
Bridges Café offers an eclectic
menu equal to anything diners
will find in chain restaurants
while Shirley’s offers
home-cooked favorites
served family-style. These are
restaurants everyone in the
family, from the grandparents
to the kids, can enjoy. I
am also giving an honorable
mention to Olde Farmhouse
Restaurant in Greeneville
which serves an incredible
family-style meal in the picture-perfect
surroundings of
an old country farmhouse.
Best Dining Experience of
2006: I came to this decision
much easier than I expected.
Picasso’s Fine Dining in Johnson
City made a fantastic first
impression. Everything about
the meal — from a loaf of
freshly baked Rosemary
Bread, delectable seafood entrees
and luscious desserts —
scintillated the taste buds.
The restaurant also provides
some smart, stylish surroundings
to enhance the
dining experience.
A Welcome Return: Carter
at Main suffered a fire on
New Year’s Eve in 2005 that
knocked the restaurant out of
operation for several months.
Fortunately, the restaurant reopened
later in 2006 and continues
to provide fine dining
in an historic Elizabethton
DEAR ABBY
STAR- FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 2007 - Page 3
Man’s affair with
one sister threatens
marriage to other
DEAR ABBY: A few years
ago I had an affair with a
woman I met at a local benefit.
I’ll call her “Desiree.” As
luck would have it, a few
years later, Desiree would become
my sister-in-law.
My wife has
always been
jealous of her
“more attractive”
sister. She
reminds me of
that fact every
time we visit.
Now Desiree
is having money
problems, and she’s
threatening to tell my wife
about our “history” if I don’t
accommodate her needs.
My marriage is already on
thin ice because I ran over
my wife’s dog and forgot our
anniversary in the same
week. What should I do? —
BLACKMAILED IN BUR-
BANK
DEAR BLACKMAILED:
If you knuckle under to
your sister-in-law’s threats,
her money problems will be
over and you will be paying
her off for the duration of
your marriage. Be smart.
Nip this in the bud by
telling your wife everything.
It isn’t your fault that
you met her sister first. You
should thank your lucky
stars that you wound up
marrying the right one.
—————
DEAR ABBY: I am a
young woman who has entered
the work force for the
first time. I work at a large
company that employs very
few women. Abby, I am a
very average girl who has
never been the center of attention,
but here at work it’s
a different story. Here, I get
treated like a supermodel.
People fawn over me, ask
me personal questions, ask
me out and just want to be
my friend. It’s hard to get
work done with so many
men coming by every day,
and it’s embarrassing for me.
I have tried to be cold to
some of them to get them to
stop coming by, but it doesn’t
work. How can I discourage
random people from coming
by just to say “Hi” and have
a conversation all the time?
They don’t start conversations
with all the men who sit
near me, so why should they
start one with me? It’s making
me want to leave the
company and never come
back. — PLAIN JANE IN
DEAR PLAIN JANE: The
Only
time has come to have a talk
about this. What appears to
be “friendliness” is hampering
your work performance
and could be construed as
sexual harassment. Please
do not leave the company.
Instead, make a formal report
about what has been
happening. It is up to management
to put a stop to this
— and if they don’t, it
should be reported to the local
labor board.
—————
DEAR ABBY: My sister
sent out an invitation for a
baby shower to be held for
her son’s wife. The invitation
gave the address where the
shower was to be held, and
at the bottom of the invitation
was a handwritten note
that read: “To be held at
‘Greg’s’ new home.”
I interpreted the note as a
“suggestion” that guests
bring a housewarming gift as
well as a baby gift. Otherwise,
the invitation would
have just given the address.
Is this a new gimmick now?
To try to get as many gifts as
people can? I acknowledged
the invitation by sending my
regrets.
It just hit me the wrong
way. I now keep my distance
from the family and do not
attend any family functions. I
rarely visit or have contact
with any of them. I would
appreciate your opinion. —
SISTER “LIZZY” IN ARI-
ZONA
DEAR “LIZZY": I don’t
know your sister, but if the
note at the bottom of the invitation
was a bid for an extra
gift, it was certainly a
veiled one. Because you
asked for my opinion, I’ll
give it to you straight: I
think you overreacted.
