While we put 2006 behind us, hopefully we will not forget the lessons learned last year, and at the same time have made an effort to teach someone else. Union Baptist Union Baptist Church, 1411 Highway 321, Hampton, will host The Principles, Johnson City, in concert on CHICAGO (AP) — There are only small signs that Augustine Tolton was here. A few buildings, including a home for senior citizens, carry his name. But the Roman Catholic church where he preached his sermons to flocks of adoring parishioners on Chicago’s South Side is long gone. And few know the story of the man himself — a slave who grew up to become the first acknowledged black Catholic priest in the United States. “When he was alive, his life would probably not have been considered that newsworthy. He lived at a time when to be a person of color automatically meant that you were not a person of significance,” said Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory, who served from 2001-2004 as the first black president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “So the very fact that he was able to accomplish what he accomplished under severe limitations was to his credit.” Even Gregory, a native Chicagoan, did not know Tolton’s story until he was well into adulthood. “We need to find vehicles to make him better known today,” he said. To that end, a book about Tolton’s life — “From Slave to Priest” — is being published by San Francisco-based Ignatius Press. The biography was written by Sister Caroline Hemesath, who first published the work in 1973. Ignatius Press hopes it will now find a wider audience. Tolton’s story is one of struggle and perseverance. The second of three children, he was born in 1854 to Catholic parents who were slaves in Missouri, just a few years before the start of the Civil War. Richard Sheppard is the pastor. Gap Creek Gap Creek Christian Church Minister Leon Langston will resume his series of messages from the book of Second Corinthians on Sunday morning, Jan. 7. The sermon title is “Telltale Signs of a Carnal Christian,” based on Second Corinthians one of many slaves who escaped to join the Union army and fight for black freedom — and who died battling for that cause, according to Hemesath’s book. Augustine, along with his mother, Martha Jane, and his two siblings, escaped across the Mississippi River to Illinois, frantically rowing a boat while ducking Confederate gunfire. Eventually, they landed in Quincy, Ill., where Martha Jane, Augustine and his brother Charley worked in a tobacco factory. Tolton met priests and nuns throughout his life who helped him, including some who taught him to read. Others, however, were angry that a black boy was being educated with whites and they tried to stop him from realizing his dream of becoming a priest. After years of rejection by U.S. seminaries, pleas on his behalf from sympathetic Catholics finally allowed Tolton to study in Rome, leading to his ordination in 1886, when he was 31. Tolton had hoped to become a missionary in Africa as an escape from American racism. Instead, he was assigned to a church in Quincy and later Chicago — a bitter disappointment that he nonetheless dutifully accepted. He went on to face more hardship and resentment, and little financial support for the black churches he oversaw. “If anybody had an excuse to leave the Catholic Church, it was him,” said Harold Burke- Sivers, a deacon in a Portland, Ore., parish, who is also African-American and who wrote the introduction to the newly issued biography. But Tolton recognized that Catholics who discriminated against him were violating church teaching on the dignity 12:11-21. A new Sunday school class for younger adults will begin on Sunday morning. On Sunday night, the sermon theme is “The Christ of the Loving Heart,” and will include Holy Land slides of the geographic places mentioned in these events in the life of Christ. The Harvey Family BRISTOL — The Harvey Family will sing at Edgemont Towers, Edgemont Avenue, on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m. Life story, struggles of first recognized black U.S. priest of all people and he dedicated himself to changing that, said Burke-Sivers. “He saw what the church could be,” he adds. Tolton was credited with becoming a unifying force for black Catholics, especially in Chicago. “Good Father Gus,” as his parishioners often called him, was known for his eloquent sermons, his beautiful singing voice and his gift for playing the accordion. Upon his arrival in Chicago in 1889, some of the black parishioners who came to see him “knelt at his feet and murmured words of gladness or wept for sheer joy because they had a pastor, ’one of their own,”’ Hemesath wrote in her book. He spent much of his time attempting to raise funds for the now-defunct Saint Monica’s Church in Chicago. “These dear people feel proud that they have a priest to look after them. Even Protestants, when sick, will send for me in preference to their preachers, and they treat me with the greatest respect,” Tolton wrote in a letter to one philanthropist. “That makes me feel that there is great work for me here.” By 1893, however, Hemesath wrote that Tolton was beginning to be plagued by “spells of illness,” though he shrugged them off, preferring to focus on his work and his parishioners. That work was cut short when he collapsed and died during a brutal Chicago heat wave in 1897. He was 43. Burke-Sivers believes it is a story that is still relevant — not only for black Catholics. “Young people can look to Father Augustine’s legacy and be inspired — and be able to say, ‘If he could do it, so could I,”’ Burke-Sivers said. Dan says he and Cara are looking forward to “whatever the Lord opens up for us to do. I can do a lot of things, and I’m not sure just what ministry He’ll put me into...but I made a commitment to Him long ago that wherever He leads me, there I will go. I intend for that to be in force as long as I am on this earth. Right now, we’re just waiting for God’s leadership, where to go next and what to do next.” The couple are active in the ministry at the church they attend, Cedar Grove Baptist Church. “We’ve helped out with VBS, spoken there some, and sung there some, and I am involved in visitation with the women,” Cara said. “We live sort of behind the church, and his dad pastored there many years ago.” For someone entering missionary work today, Dan says the greatest challenge would be the same as when he and Cara began their PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Fuller Theological Seminary plans to build a new high-tech worship center in a nod to the contemporary worship styles that are popular in evangelical churches. The prominent evangelical seminary, one of the nation’s largest, will build a 35,000-square-foot complex that will house two chapels, classrooms, offices and performance facilities. The complex’s centerpiece will be a 500-seat main chapel with 63 ranks of organ pipes, a grand piano and the latest in digital electronics to control house and ministry. “Trying to learn to live cross-culturally, adapt to another culture, to another people’s way of thinking and be effective in the time of it is quite a challenge. One of the problems I think we have now worldwide is that white Americans are not accepted as well as we were in the past.” God’s calling and protection go hand-in-hand, according to Dan. “Once you’re called of God to do this kind of work, the Lord takes care of those things,” he said. “He doesn’t promise an easy time. There are times that are extremely difficult. “Our last six years in Manila I directed the Mobile Out of School Training program for our mission. I also wore the hat of the computer fix-it guy,” Dan said. “The Philippines is a great big pile of gravel,” Dan said. “It’s not really hard solid rock much.” Seventy-one-hundred islands comprise the Philippines, Cara said. A Boone, N.C. native, Dan moved to East Tennessee when he was five years old and his father, Ben Wood, was called to be the pastor of a stage lights. The worship center is part of a multimillion-dollar, 20year development plan for the campus. Fuller officials say the sound and light focus in the new worship center reflect broader trends in American worship that emphasize performance and varied expressions of faith. In the chapel, panels on the walls and ceiling may be moved to enhance the sound of a string orchestra, while a sophisticated sound system will be able to accommodate hip-hop performers with their bass-heavy take on the Local pastor to attend White House briefing Soul’s Life Center pastor Roger Gray will travel to Washington D.C. to attend a White House briefing on President Bush’s upcoming priorities. Missionary couple retires after 26 years of service in Philippines Butler church. “After five years, we moved to Cedar Grove, where he pastored for about 11 years,” Dan said. “I transferred in mid-sixth grade to Happy Valley. I’m the last person to graduate from the old Happy Valley building.” Cara and Dan have a daughter, Dena, a computer programmer in Atlanta, Ga. The couple also have two sons, Matthew and Stephen, who also reside in Georgia. They also have four granddaughters. A Happy Valley High School graduate, Dan graduated from East Tennessee State University. He earned a M.Div. degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. Cara graduated from Murphy High School in Atlanta. She went to Howard College, Birmingham, Ala., earning a degree in elementary education. The school later became Samford University. Cora earned a M.RE degree, specializing in children’s work, from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. (AP) — Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter was ordained a deacon last month by Maranatha Baptist Church, the independent Associated Baptist Press reported. Rosalynn Carter, 79, has been active in the congregation, along with ex-President Jimmy Carter, who draws thousands of visitors to the rural church by teaching Sunday school there.
