Racers try to parlay recent success to future

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North 

Carolina lasted about three weeks 

at No. 1 before suffering its fi rst 

loss and seeing its best player 

hobbled by an ankle injury. Now 

things really get tough for the Tar 

Heels. 

With preseason All-American 

Harrison Barnes recovering from 

a sprained right ankle, fi fthranked 

North Carolina hosts No. 

9 Wisconsin on Wednesday night 

in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. 

Then comes Saturday’s trip to 

Kentucky, which replaced the 

Tar Heels at No. 1 after the loss to 

UNLV over the weekend. 

UNC coach Roy Williams said 

Barnes missed Monday’s practice 

after rolling his ankle while 

chasing a loose ball in the fi rst 

half against UNLV. He returned 

to play 30 minutes, though Williams 

didn’t sound certain that 

the 6-foot-8 forward would be 

ready for the Badgers. But team 

spokesman Steve Kirschner said 

Barnes — the team’s top scorer at 

17 points per game — planned to 

return to “full” practice Tuesday 

afternoon. 

Even with Barnes in the lineup, 

however, the Tar Heels (5-1) will 

be challenged to regroup from the 

surprising loss. 

“I’m sure they’re disappointed 

— I don’t know if I would say 

angry,” Williams said. “I think 

they were disappointed greatly 

in losing. I think they were also 

disappointed greatly in how they 

played. And that’s what we’ve got 

bid to the Football Championship 

Subdivision playoffs. But 

fi nishing 7-4, the program’s best 

record since 2004, with the mere 

hope of a playoff spot was the 

next best thing, especially considering 

where the Racers started 

when coach Chris Hatcher took 

over two seasons ago.

While Friday’s Pac-12 championship 

game is one of the 

outgrowths of league expansion, 

the conference’s dramatic 

makeover will really take shape 

next season. 

That’s when the Pac-12’s $3 

billion television deal takes off. 

Because of equal revenue sharing, 

each of the league’s schools 

will eventually reap more than 

$20 million apiece annually 

from the 12-year contract with 

Fox and ESPN. 

The infl ux means that the 

conference’s athletic departments 

that depend on fi nancial 

help from their universities 

should someday soon be able to 

pay their own bills. 

But for programs with smaller 

budgets, like Oregon State, 

Washington State and Utah, it 

also means a more level playing 

fi eld with schools like Oregon, 

which has a generous booster 

in Nike co-founder Phil Knight, 

and USC, which has a self-suffi 

cient athletic department and 

lots of national TV exposure. 

Utah’s athletic budget is $35 

million — less than half of Oregon’s 

— with about $6 million 

coming from the university and 

student fees to make ends meet, 

according to athletic director 

Chis Hill. 

Before joining the Pac-12, the 

Utes were taking in less than 

$2 million from the Mountain 

West Conference’s television 

The 10th-ranked Cardinals scored the first 16 

points of the game Tuesday in Louisville and Murray 

State could not recover from its slow start. Five Cardinal 

players reached double figures on their way to a 

105-62 victory.

Chelsey Shumpert made a triumphant 

return to the basketball 

court, and it appears that 

Paducah Tilghman’s status as a 

First Region contender is back as 

well. 

Shumpert, who missed much 

of last season with a knee injury, 

tossed in 23 points, handed out 

six assists and had fi ve steals as 

the Lady Tornado thumped defending 

regional champion Calloway 

County 69-57 in both teams’ 

season openers on Tuesday night 

at Otis Dinning Gymnasium. 

“I think I’m back to 100 percent,” 

said Shumpert, playing 

her fi rst offi cial game since mid- 

December, when she tore her 

ACL in a loss to district rival Lone 

Oak. “It’s a big win for us. We’ve 

been trying to beat them for a 

while, and it has to give us a lot 

of confi dence to start the season.” 

But in the words of Tilghman 

coach Rod Thomas, the sweetest 

part of the victory was how his 

team held on in Shumpert’s extended 

absence. She fouled out 

at the 5:16 mark with Tilghman 

holding a 57-47 lead but pushed 

the lead to as much as 14 points 

in the fi nal two minutes. 

“It’s always great to get the 

win, but it’s the way we did it,” 

said Thomas, who was making 

his debut as a head coach after 

taking over for former boss Josh 

Barnett this fall. “To extend the 

lead without her in there ... that’s 

something we couldn’t have done 

last year.”

Television deal boosts 

Pac-12’s have-not teams 

deal. As part of the agreement 

to join the conference, they’ll 

get about 50 percent of what 

the other schools receive in the 

fi rst year of the media deal but 

they’ll eventually pull even. 

Utah has some immediate 

plans for the money. A football 

center, modestly planned at 

around $16 million, will now 

have a few extra touches, bringing 

the cost to $30 million. Hill 

said that overall the Utes will 

focus on closing the gap in facilities, 

for student support services 

and for attracting — and 

keeping — quality personnel. 

If there’s any downside, it’s 

that Utah’s overall athletic budget 

will have to go up now that 

the school has joined a BCS 

conference. 

“And the real difference for us 

has been that week in and week 

out, the games are really tough,” 

Hill joked. 

Oregon State President Edward 

Ray said in an interview 

with The Associated Press this 

fall that the Pac-10’s members 

were insistent on equal revenue 

sharing. But, at the same time, 

they didn’t want schools with 

media deals already in place to 

lose money. He cited USC as a 

program that could have been 

hurt by revenue sharing — but 

ultimately wasn’t.

Chancellor backs Boeheim

Chancellor Nancy Cantor gave men’s 

basketball coach Jim Boeheim a vote of 

confi dence Tuesday amid an investigation 

of child molestation allegations 

against his former longtime assistant

Some commentators and sex abuse victims’ 

advocates had said Boeheim should 

resign or be fi red after three men, including 

two former Syracuse ballboys, accused

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers

The half was a shocker, with 

Ohio State setting the pace 

early, shrugging aside a Duke 

comeback and then pulling 

away for a gaping 47-28 lead at

just a notch back with 12 points

things is we came out 

scared,” Cross said. “When 

you step up in competition 

against a team like Louisville

Murray State missed its 

fi rst nine shots and started 

the game 1 for 18 from the 

fl oor before Mariah Robinson’s 

3 cut the defi cit to 

20-5 with 12:23 left in the 

fi rst half. Louisville held 

the Racers to 17.9-percent 

shooting (7 of 39) in the 

fi rst half. 

“We didn’t make any 

shots. When we attacked 

we changed every shot we 

took, we’d double pump.

of younger receivers beset 

with injuries at times. 

“We’ve gotten a step better 

each season,” Hatcher 

said. “And hopefully this 

upcoming season, our goal 

hasn’t changed, but maybe 

reaching the next level of 

the conference will become 

more realistic for our team.” 

Hatcher anticipates a renewed 

offseason workout 

focus beginning after Christmas, 

but in the meantime, 

he and his staff are on the recruiting 

trail, one of the most 

important factors in creating 

a program able to achieve 

sustainable success. 

The recruiting philosophy 

for the staff is to woo

The Racers will next host 

Saint Louis on Dec. 3 in 

their only December home 

game. Murray State lost on 

the Billikens’ home court, 

59-49 last Saturday.

Coaches are also looking 

for receivers as well as the 

one spot on the roster with 

the least depth right now:

“We only got one coming 

back and that’s Duane 

Brady,” Hatcher said. “You 

talk about depth, we have 

Mike Harris, Duane Brady, 

Tyler Lavea, those are the 

only three running backs in 

the whole program. That’s 

going to be a big area for 

concern, is getting some 

quality running backs in 

here, as well.” 

But every step has been 

one in the positive direction 

for the program, and 

Hatcher remains optimistic 

about the very near future 

of Racer football. 

“We’re trying to get it to 

where we’re a consistent 

contender for the championship,” 

Hatcher said. 

“And I say contender, you 

wish you could win it every 

year, but as long as you’re 

competing for that championship 

every year, you’ve 

got the program where it 

needs to be. We took another 

step in that direction 

this season.” 

HEELS: Struggles are bad omen

of things to improve. And

potential NBA talent on 

the front line. And UNC 

struggled to contain dribble 

penetration or defend the 

perimeter in the 90-80 loss 

to the Runnin’ Rebels. 

The struggles against 

UNLV could be a bad omen 

against the Badgers (6-0), 

who have outrebounded opponents 

by an average of 14 

per game and are shooting 47 

percent from 3-point range. 

But Wisconsin coach Bo 

Ryan said there wasn’t any 

disappointment about not 

getting a shot at the No. 

1-ranked team anymore.

The clothing retailer’s stock

debt crisis. But when Guess 

reports third-quarter results

say the company could 

announce another special

Krispy Kreme earnings 

The doughnut maker’s stock 

may be returning to form. In 

2001, it more than doubled and 

analysts worried it may be a 

bubble. The stock then 

dropped in five of the next 

seven years as low-carb diets 

dulled demand. But Krispy 

Kreme rose 76 percent in 2009 

and another 137 percent last 

year. Its revenue is also grow- 

ing again, and analysts expect 

it to report a sixth straight quar- 

ter of gains today. 

ADP payroll report 

Investors get a sneak pre- 

view of Friday’s jobs report 

today. Payroll processor 

ADP will give an update on 

job growth at private com- 

panies. Economists expect 

it to show private employ- 

ers added 130,000 jobs.

Looking for promising retail stocks? Aim high, or

On Black Friday, holiday sales rose 

7 percent to $11.4 billion, the largest 

amount ever spent, according to 

research firm ShopperTrak. That may 

make retail stocks generally look more 

attractive, but financial analysts say 

you should focus on retailers who cater 

to the high or low end of consumer 

tastes. 

That’s because upscale retailers have been 

doing well this year as a result of shoppers looking 

for handbags and other items they see as 

“affordable luxuries”. 

At the same time, consumers aren’t 

taking home much bigger paychecks. 

Personal Income is only rising gradually. 

Many consumers are still struggling, which 

makes discount chains more appealing.

3 new exhibits opening at Elvis’ Graceland 

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Elvis Presley Enterprises says 

three new exhibits will open next year at Graceland in 

Memphis to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the 

entertainer’s death. 

The first exhibit looks at the 1972 documentary “Elvis 

on Tour,” which chronicles a multi-city concert tour. 

The exhibit, which opens Jan. 5, will include jewelry and 

clothing worn by Elvis during the shows. 

“Elvis ... Through His Daughter’s Eyes,” which opens 

Feb. 1, will highlight Elvis’ relationship with his daughter, 

Lisa Marie Presley. It includes family photos and home 

movies that show her growing up at Graceland. 

The third exhibit, opening March 1, is called “Icon: 

The Influence of Elvis Presley.” It features clothing, musical 

instruments and other items used by performers 

who were influenced by Elvis. 

Elvis Presley died Aug. 16, 1977. 

Parsons plans a Broadway return in ‘Harvey’ 

NEW YORK — Jim Parsons seems to have gotten a 

big bang out of Broadway and wants to return. 

The star of “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS is set to 

star this summer in a Roundabout 

Theatre Company revival of the Pulitzer 

Prize-winning comedy “Harvey” by 

Mary Chase. 

Performances of “Harvey” will begin 

May 18 at Studio 54 with an opening 

set for June 14. It runs through Aug. 5. 

A two-time Emmy winner, Parsons 

made his Broadway debut in Larry 

Kramer’s play “The Normal Heart” ear- 

Parsons 

lier this year. 

He’ll be joined in “Harvey” by Jessica 

Hecht and Charles Kimbrough. 

The play is about a man who gets into trouble over his 

friendship with a 6-foot-tall, invisible white rabbit named 

Harvey. 

Broadway’s ‘Ghost’ will have a familiar feel 

NEW YORK — The Broadway-bound casting of the musical 

“Ghost” will have be hauntingly familiar. 

Producers said Tuesday that Richard Fleeshman and 

Caissie Levy will reprise their starring roles as Sam and 

Molly that they originated in London. 

The musical is based on the 1990 movie in which Patrick 

Swayze played a ghost trying to communicate with 

his girlfriend through a fake psychic in hopes of saving 

her from his murderer. Demi Moore played the girlfriend. 

“Ghost” has new songs by Grammy Award winner 

Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard. Stewart is half of the 

pop duo the Eurythmics. Ballard helped put together 

Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill.” 

Previews will begin March 15 at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne 

Theatre. Opening night is set for April 23. Tickets 

go on sale Dec. 5.

Jackson doc gets 4-year sentence

doctor who was convicted 

in the overdose death of 

Michael Jackson was sentenced 

to the maximum 

four years in prison Tuesday 

in a fi nale to the tormented 

saga of the King of Pop. 

Dr. Conrad Murray sat 

stoically with his hands 

crossed as Superior Court 

Judge Michael Pastor repeatedly 

chastised him for 

what he called a “horrifi c 

violation of trust” while 

caring for Jackson. 

“Dr. Murray created a 

set of circumstances and 

became involved in a cycle 

of horrible medicine,” the 

judge said. “The practice 

of propofol for medicine 

madness, which violated 

his sworn obligation, for 

money, fame prestige and 

whwatever else may have 

occurred.” 

Pastor said one of the 

most disturbing aspects 

of Murray’s case was a 

slurred recording of Jackson 

recovered from the 

doctor’s cell phone. 

“That tape recording 

was Dr. Murray’s insurance 

policy,” Pastor said. 

“It was designed to record 

his patient surreptitiously 

at that patient’s most vulnerable 

point.” 

Michael Jackson’s family 

told Pastor they were 

not seeking revenge but 

want the doctor who killed 

the superstar to receive a 

stiff sentence that serves 

as a warning to opportunistic 

doctors. 

“The Bible reminds us 

that men cannot do justice, 

they can only seek 

justice,” the family said in 

a statement read by attorney 

Brian Panish. “That is 

all we can ask as a family, 

and that is all we ask for 

here.” 

The statement went on

Legal guardianship may be path

Dear Annie: We are the 

grandparents of a beautiful 

4-year-old girl. We have 

been watching her for the 

past three months because 

her parents had their water 

service shut off due to lack of 

payment. A month ago, they 

had their gas and electricity 

shut off, as well. They are living 

off of the welfare system 

with no other means of support. 

In the past, my wife and I 

have paid a lot of money to 

keep their utilities on, but 

this time we took a stand and 

decided not to. Instead, we 

opted to assist in taking care
