CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North
Carolina lasted about three weeks
at No. 1 before suffering its fi rst
loss and seeing its best player
hobbled by an ankle injury. Now
things really get tough for the Tar
Heels.
With preseason All-American
Harrison Barnes recovering from
a sprained right ankle, fi fthranked
North Carolina hosts No.
9 Wisconsin on Wednesday night
in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Then comes Saturday’s trip to
Kentucky, which replaced the
Tar Heels at No. 1 after the loss to
UNLV over the weekend.
UNC coach Roy Williams said
Barnes missed Monday’s practice
after rolling his ankle while
chasing a loose ball in the fi rst
half against UNLV. He returned
to play 30 minutes, though Williams
didn’t sound certain that
the 6-foot-8 forward would be
ready for the Badgers. But team
spokesman Steve Kirschner said
Barnes — the team’s top scorer at
17 points per game — planned to
return to “full” practice Tuesday
afternoon.
Even with Barnes in the lineup,
however, the Tar Heels (5-1) will
be challenged to regroup from the
surprising loss.
“I’m sure they’re disappointed
— I don’t know if I would say
angry,” Williams said. “I think
they were disappointed greatly
in losing. I think they were also
disappointed greatly in how they
played. And that’s what we’ve got
bid to the Football Championship
Subdivision playoffs. But
fi nishing 7-4, the program’s best
record since 2004, with the mere
hope of a playoff spot was the
next best thing, especially considering
where the Racers started
when coach Chris Hatcher took
While Friday’s Pac-12 championship
game is one of the
outgrowths of league expansion,
the conference’s dramatic
makeover will really take shape
next season.
That’s when the Pac-12’s $3
billion television deal takes off.
Because of equal revenue sharing,
each of the league’s schools
will eventually reap more than
$20 million apiece annually
from the 12-year contract with
Fox and ESPN.
The infl ux means that the
conference’s athletic departments
that depend on fi nancial
help from their universities
should someday soon be able to
pay their own bills.
But for programs with smaller
budgets, like Oregon State,
Washington State and Utah, it
also means a more level playing
fi eld with schools like Oregon,
which has a generous booster
in Nike co-founder Phil Knight,
and USC, which has a self-suffi
cient athletic department and
lots of national TV exposure.
Utah’s athletic budget is $35
million — less than half of Oregon’s
— with about $6 million
coming from the university and
student fees to make ends meet,
according to athletic director
Chis Hill.
Before joining the Pac-12, the
Utes were taking in less than
$2 million from the Mountain
West Conference’s television
The 10th-ranked Cardinals scored the first 16
points of the game Tuesday in Louisville and Murray
State could not recover from its slow start. Five Cardinal
players reached double figures on their way to a
Shumpert return
buoys Tilghman
BY JOEY FOSKO
jfosko@paducahsun.com
Chelsey Shumpert made a triumphant
return to the basketball
court, and it appears that
Paducah Tilghman’s status as a
First Region contender is back as
well.
Shumpert, who missed much
of last season with a knee injury,
tossed in 23 points, handed out
six assists and had fi ve steals as
the Lady Tornado thumped defending
regional champion Calloway
County 69-57 in both teams’
season openers on Tuesday night
at Otis Dinning Gymnasium.
“I think I’m back to 100 percent,”
said Shumpert, playing
her fi rst offi cial game since mid-
December, when she tore her
ACL in a loss to district rival Lone
Oak. “It’s a big win for us. We’ve
been trying to beat them for a
while, and it has to give us a lot
of confi dence to start the season.”
But in the words of Tilghman
coach Rod Thomas, the sweetest
part of the victory was how his
team held on in Shumpert’s extended
absence. She fouled out
at the 5:16 mark with Tilghman
holding a 57-47 lead but pushed
the lead to as much as 14 points
in the fi nal two minutes.
“It’s always great to get the
win, but it’s the way we did it,”
said Thomas, who was making
his debut as a head coach after
taking over for former boss Josh
Barnett this fall. “To extend the
lead without her in there ... that’s
something we couldn’t have done
last year.”
Surprisingly, Tilghman looked
entirely comfortable with much
Hatcher and the Racers are 13-9.
The season had its ups and
downs. The Racers won fi ve out
of their last six contests, though
they played much of the season
with injuries at key positions,
greatly affecting a roster already
Please see RACERS | 3B
Television deal boosts
Pac-12’s have-not teams
deal. As part of the agreement
to join the conference, they’ll
get about 50 percent of what
the other schools receive in the
fi rst year of the media deal but
they’ll eventually pull even.
Utah has some immediate
plans for the money. A football
center, modestly planned at
around $16 million, will now
have a few extra touches, bringing
the cost to $30 million. Hill
said that overall the Utes will
focus on closing the gap in facilities,
for student support services
and for attracting — and
keeping — quality personnel.
If there’s any downside, it’s
that Utah’s overall athletic budget
will have to go up now that
the school has joined a BCS
conference.
“And the real difference for us
has been that week in and week
out, the games are really tough,”
Hill joked.
Oregon State President Edward
Ray said in an interview
with The Associated Press this
fall that the Pac-10’s members
were insistent on equal revenue
sharing. But, at the same time,
they didn’t want schools with
media deals already in place to
lose money. He cited USC as a
program that could have been
hurt by revenue sharing — but
ultimately wasn’t.
“At the end of the day, we really
feel good where we are as a
result of the ESPN-Fox agree-
Ndamukong Suh is going
hoping for some leniency.
The league suspended
games Tuesday, punishing
the second-year player for
roughing up a Green Bay
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello
the league and NFLPA. As of
late Tuesday afternoon, the
Suh appeals NFL’s 2-game suspension
the Saints or in the Dec. 11
home game against Minnesota.
He would return Dec.
12 ahead of a road game
If the NFL turns rejects
the appeal, Suh will watch
the Lions (7-4) scramble to
league said was his fi fth violation
It was a festive, capacity
crowd of 18,809 at Value City
Arena. One female student held
up a sign meant for Sullinger
that said, “Jared, will you marry
me?” When Rivers — the son of
Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers
— had a turnover, the Ohio
State student section chanted,
“Daddy’s boy! Daddy’s boy!”
The half was a shocker, with
Ohio State setting the pace
early, shrugging aside a Duke
comeback and then pulling
away for a gaping 47-28 lead at
the break.
Buford had 13 points (on
5-of-9 shooting) and so did
Thomas (6 for 8). Sullinger was
just a notch back with 12 points
(5 of 7) as the Buckeyes shot 61
percent (20 of 33) to the Blue
Devils’ 44 percent (12 for 27).
Louisville women
rout Murray State
Associated Press
LOUISVILLE — After
Louisville scored the
game’s fi rst 16 points, Murray
State coach Rob Cross
said his team did the one
thing they couldn’t afford
to do: play scared.
Monique Reid scored 18
points, Shawnta’ Dyer and
Shoni Mitchell added 14
each, and the 10th-ranked
Cardinals cruised to a 105-
62 win over the Racers on
Tuesday night.
“The disappointing
things is we came out
scared,” Cross said. “When
you step up in competition
against a team like Louisville
in the Big East, you
can’t play scared.”
Murray State missed its
fi rst nine shots and started
the game 1 for 18 from the
fl oor before Mariah Robinson’s
3 cut the defi cit to
20-5 with 12:23 left in the
fi rst half. Louisville held
the Racers to 17.9-percent
shooting (7 of 39) in the
fi rst half.
“We didn’t make any
shots. When we attacked
we changed every shot we
took, we’d double pump.
RACERS: MSU led conference in
almost every offensive category
CONTINUED FROM 1B
suffering from a lack of
depth. The team pulled
out come-from-behind
victories and one-point
wins, but also lost the “big
games,” as Hatcher called
them, to Eastern Kentucky
and Jacksonville State.
The Racers also matched
2010’s offensive fi reworks,
leading the OVC in nearly
every offensive category
under new offensive coordinator
Mitch Stewart.
Junior quarterback Casey
Brockman set more school
and OVC passing records
despite throwing to a group
of younger receivers beset
with injuries at times.
“We’ve gotten a step better
each season,” Hatcher
said. “And hopefully this
upcoming season, our goal
hasn’t changed, but maybe
reaching the next level of
the conference will become
more realistic for our team.”
Hatcher anticipates a renewed
offseason workout
focus beginning after Christmas,
but in the meantime,
he and his staff are on the recruiting
trail, one of the most
important factors in creating
a program able to achieve
sustainable success.
The recruiting philosophy
for the staff is to woo
Then we weren’t able to get
our defense set,” he said.
The slow start took away
what Cross said was the
only approach his team had
to knocking off the Cardinals.
“The only chance we had
was to come in here and hit
about 20 threes and play
fast and then get our defense
set.”
Five Cardinals players
reached double fi gures and
all 12 who played scored.
Louisville’s 105 points
eclipsed its previous season
high of 86 set last Saturday
at Florida A&M.
Robinson scored 22
points, including 5 for 9 on
3s, to lead the Racers (2-5).
Kayla Lowe scored added
13 points and Erica Burgess
had 10.
Murray State fi nished its
road trip 0-4, losing the
fi nale in its fi rst matchup
against a ranked opponent
since the 2008-09 season.
The Racers will next host
Saint Louis on Dec. 3 in
their only December home
game. Murray State lost on
the Billikens’ home court,
59-49 last Saturday.
the best available at any
given position, with Hatcher
saying a focus is always
put on defensive linemen
and defensive backs.
Coaches are also looking
for receivers as well as the
one spot on the roster with
the least depth right now:
running back.
“We only got one coming
back and that’s Duane
Brady,” Hatcher said. “You
talk about depth, we have
Mike Harris, Duane Brady,
Tyler Lavea, those are the
only three running backs in
the whole program. That’s
going to be a big area for
concern, is getting some
quality running backs in
here, as well.”
But every step has been
one in the positive direction
for the program, and
Hatcher remains optimistic
about the very near future
of Racer football.
“We’re trying to get it to
where we’re a consistent
contender for the championship,”
Hatcher said.
“And I say contender, you
wish you could win it every
year, but as long as you’re
competing for that championship
every year, you’ve
got the program where it
needs to be. We took another
step in that direction
this season.”
HEELS: Struggles are bad omen
CONTINUED FROM 1B
to change.”
North Carolina has plenty
of things to improve. And
that list has changed.
Michigan State outrebounded
the Tar Heels
by 15 in the Carrier Classic
opener. Two games later,
North Carolina continued
last season’s outside shooting
struggles against Mississippi
Valley State. The
next game, UNC’s shooting
improved only to see the
defense struggle for a half
against Tennessee State.
After fl ying west for the
Las Vegas Invitational, the
Tar Heels were outrebounded
against both South Carolina
and UNLV — a surprise
considering the Tar Heels’
potential NBA talent on
the front line. And UNC
struggled to contain dribble
penetration or defend the
perimeter in the 90-80 loss
to the Runnin’ Rebels.
The struggles against
UNLV could be a bad omen
against the Badgers (6-0),
who have outrebounded opponents
by an average of 14
per game and are shooting 47
percent from 3-point range.
But Wisconsin coach Bo
Ryan said there wasn’t any
disappointment about not
getting a shot at the No.
1-ranked team anymore.
TORNADO: Tilghman’s quickness, pressure made life tough for Calloway
CONTINUED FROM 1B
of the ballhandling in
Shumpert’s stead being
handled by two freshmen,
Alex Kohler and Karlee
Humphrey, even against
the Lady Lakers’ fullcourt
pressure. Kohler led the
Lady Tornado with 24
points and Humphrey
turned in a solid effort
with 11 points and eight
rebounds.
“A lot of these girls had
to handle the ball a lot
more after we lost Chelsey
last year — not just those
two, but Ngodoo Itiavkase
and Destiny Skinner,”
Thomas said. “It’s made
them better players and
us a better team. It was a
blessing in disguise.”
Tilghman’s quickness
and intense pressure, in
the fullcourt and halfcourt
varieties, made life tough
for a Calloway squad that
will need time to adjust to
the loss of all-stater Averee
Fields, now playing college
ball at West Virginia.
The Lady Lakers had 26
turnovers, 11 in the fi rst
quarter, as Tilghman took
a 35-22 halftime lead and
extended the lead to 52-32
DEAL: Television revenue to help some of conference’s at-risk programs
ment. It will provide substantial
resources, and for
a school like Oregon State
University, it will literally
mean — all the numbers
haven’t settled down —
but my expectation is that
over the next half-dozen
years, we’ll be in a position
where whatever accumulated
debts our athletic department
has will be paid
off, and it will not require
support from the (university’s)
general fund,” said
“They really got into us
defensively,” Calloway
coach Scott Sivills said,
“and caused a lot of havoc.
They scored 69 points, and
it seemed like 80 percent
came out of transition.”
Kohler was on the fi nishing
end of much of that and
Oregon State’s athletic
budget is currently at $56
million, about $4 million
of which comes from the
university. Like most of
the other programs in the
league, the Beavers will get
about $16 million in television
revenue next season
and the amount will
increase over the length of
the contract.
Oregon State will fi rst
pay off debt, according to
Steve Fenk, the Beavers’
associate athletic director
for communications. The
department borrowed for
projects that included the
expansion of Reser Stadium.
2-pointers (12) in its win
and seven treys. Reed (15)
and Blake Vaughan (14)
also put up big points for
St. Mary. Marcus Burnett
looks poised to become quite
the running mate at guard
for Shumpert, a junior who
has been starting since she
was an eighth-grader.
“With her back, everything
just runs faster now,”
Kohler said. “She can take
care of the ball and she
passes the ball and gets us
est, by far, athletic department
in the conference;
the additional funds will
help build our infrastructure
in terms of personnel
— such as athletic trainers,
compliance offi cers, etc.,”
Fenk outlined in an email.
“Also, the cost of tuition
continues to rise, thus the
increased television dollars
will help offset that.”
There’s speculation in
track-crazy Oregon that
the Beavers may be able
to revive a full track program
with the additional
funds. Dick Fosbury, the
high jumper who created
the “Fosbury Flop,” is
Oregon State has already
brought back a women’s
team and is building a
new track. Some football
players have competed in
meets. But the reinstatement
of a full track program
won’t happen until
the sport can be fully endowed,
Fenk said. Still,
proponents are hopeful it
will happen by 2014.
“I think ultimately that
boils it all down to what
this is all about. Going
from a situation from
where some of our sports
were at risk — I think that
has all changed,” said Pac-
12 Commissioner Larry
Scott, who brokered the
TV deal.
Guess earnings
The clothing retailer’s stock
has sunk because it gets
much of its revenue from
Europe – some 43 percent
in the three months ended
July 30. Those sales may
be threatened by Europe’s
debt crisis. But when Guess
reports third-quarter results
today: Sterne Agee analysts
say the company could
announce another special
dividend, similar to last
year’s special $2 dividend.
Krispy Kreme earnings
The doughnut maker’s stock
may be returning to form. In
2001, it more than doubled and
analysts worried it may be a
bubble. The stock then
dropped in five of the next
seven years as low-carb diets
dulled demand. But Krispy
Kreme rose 76 percent in 2009
and another 137 percent last
year. Its revenue is also grow-
ing again, and analysts expect
it to report a sixth straight quar-
ter of gains today.
ADP payroll report
Investors get a sneak pre-
view of Friday’s jobs report
today. Payroll processor
ADP will give an update on
job growth at private com-
panies. Economists expect
it to show private employ-
ers added 130,000 jobs.
ADP’s accuracy in predict-
ing the government’s job
report has been erratic. But
last month, it overesti-
mated private payroll
growth by just 6,000 jobs.
Looking for promising retail stocks? Aim high, or
go low.
On Black Friday, holiday sales rose
7 percent to $11.4 billion, the largest
amount ever spent, according to
research firm ShopperTrak. That may
make retail stocks generally look more
attractive, but financial analysts say
you should focus on retailers who cater
to the high or low end of consumer
tastes.
That’s because upscale retailers have been
doing well this year as a result of shoppers looking
for handbags and other items they see as
“affordable luxuries”.
At the same time, consumers aren’t
taking home much bigger paychecks.
Personal Income is only rising gradually.
Many consumers are still struggling, which
makes discount chains more appealing.
A trio of strong retail stocks on both
ends of the spectrum:
Tiffany (TIF)
Tuesday close: $67.22
52 week range: $54.58 - $84.49
Price-earnings ratio: 20
(based on past 12 months)
Market value: $8.6 billion
Profits at Tiffany & Co. rose 63
percent in the third quarter. The
luxury retailer also raised its
full-year forecast to $3.70 to $3.80
per share, from prior guidance of
$3.65 to $3.75. But alarm over a
fourth-quarter earnings forecast
below expectations sent the stock
down 8.7 percent Tuesday. Still,
Tiffany’s results show the luxury
shopper is spending freely and
the stock’s price decline is a good
buying opportunity.
Dollar General (DG)
Tuesday close: $39.93
52 week range: $26.65 - $40.71
Price-earnings ratio: 21
(based on past 12 months)
Market value: $13.6 billion
Wall Street expects positive
news from Dollar General when
it reports third-quarter earnings
next week. The massive
discount chain of more than
9,500 stores in 35 states, is
poised for more growth: online.
This year, the company offered
online shopping for the first
Coach (COH)
Tuesday close: $60.20
52 week range: $45.70 - $69.20
Price-earnings ratio: 20
(based on past 12 months)
Market value: $17.6 billion
Coach is expanding in China
and Credit Suisse analyst
Christian Buss says the
company still has plenty of
room to grow at home. The
luxury handbag maker plans to
open around 100 U.S. stores in
the next four years. Its revenue
rose 15 percent in its latest
quarter, exceeding analyst
expectations.
three new exhibits will open next year at Graceland in
The exhibit, which opens Jan. 5, will include jewelry and
“Elvis ... Through His Daughter’s Eyes,” which opens
Feb. 1, will highlight Elvis’ relationship with his daughter,
Lisa Marie Presley. It includes family photos and home
movies that show her growing up at Graceland.
The third exhibit, opening March 1, is called “Icon:
who were influenced by Elvis.
Elvis Presley died Aug. 16, 1977.
Parsons plans a Broadway return in ‘Harvey’
NEW YORK — Jim Parsons seems to have gotten a
big bang out of Broadway and wants to return.
The star of “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS is set to
star this summer in a Roundabout
Theatre Company revival of the Pulitzer
Prize-winning comedy “Harvey” by
Mary Chase.
Performances of “Harvey” will begin
May 18 at Studio 54 with an opening
A two-time Emmy winner, Parsons
Kramer’s play “The Normal Heart” ear-
Parsons
lier this year.
He’ll be joined in “Harvey” by Jessica
Hecht and Charles Kimbrough.
The play is about a man who gets into trouble over his
friendship with a 6-foot-tall, invisible white rabbit named
Harvey.
Broadway’s ‘Ghost’ will have a familiar feel
NEW YORK — The Broadway-bound casting of the musical
“Ghost” will have be hauntingly familiar.
Producers said Tuesday that Richard Fleeshman and
Caissie Levy will reprise their starring roles as Sam and
Molly that they originated in London.
The musical is based on the 1990 movie in which Patrick
Swayze played a ghost trying to communicate with
his girlfriend through a fake psychic in hopes of saving
her from his murderer. Demi Moore played the girlfriend.
“Ghost” has new songs by Grammy Award winner
Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard. Stewart is half of the
pop duo the Eurythmics. Ballard helped put together
Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill.”
Previews will begin March 15 at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne
Jackson doc gets 4-year sentence
BY ANTHONY
MCCARTNEY
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — The
doctor who was convicted
in the overdose death of
Michael Jackson was sentenced
to the maximum
four years in prison Tuesday
in a fi nale to the tormented
saga of the King of Pop.
Dr. Conrad Murray sat
stoically with his hands
crossed as Superior Court
Judge Michael Pastor repeatedly
chastised him for
what he called a “horrifi c
violation of trust” while
caring for Jackson.
“Dr. Murray created a
set of circumstances and
became involved in a cycle
of horrible medicine,” the
judge said. “The practice
of propofol for medicine
madness, which violated
his sworn obligation, for
money, fame prestige and
whwatever else may have
occurred.”
Pastor said one of the
most disturbing aspects
of Murray’s case was a
slurred recording of Jackson
recovered from the
doctor’s cell phone.
“That tape recording
was Dr. Murray’s insurance
policy,” Pastor said.
“It was designed to record
his patient surreptitiously
at that patient’s most vulnerable
point.”
Michael Jackson’s family
told Pastor they were
not seeking revenge but
want the doctor who killed
the superstar to receive a
stiff sentence that serves
as a warning to opportunistic
doctors.
“The Bible reminds us
that men cannot do justice,
they can only seek
justice,” the family said in
a statement read by attorney
Brian Panish. “That is
all we can ask as a family,
and that is all we ask for
here.”
The statement went on
to say, “We are not here
A man shouts with joy after hearing the sentencing of Dr. Conrad Murray, the doctor
convicted in the overdose death of Michael Jackson. Murray was sentenced to
the maximum four years behind bars Tuesday.
to seek revenge. There is
nothing you can do today
that will bring Michael
back.”
Murray was convicted
of involuntary manslaughter
after a six-week trial
that presented the most
detailed account yet of
Jackson’s fi nal hours but
left many questions about
Murray’s treatment of the
superstar with an operating-room
anesthetic as he
battled chronic insomnia.
WEDNESDAY, NOV. 30, 2011
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Don’t
take anything you have for granted.
Problems at work will surface if you
are a know-it-all. Listen and be attentive
both at work and home and
you will end up getting what you
want. Arguments are for losers.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20):
Someone will try to take advantage
of you. Don’t offer cash or your time
to an organization claiming to help
those in need. Work toward your
own goals and help those you love.
Charity begins at home. Love is on
the rise.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Trust
your instincts when it comes to
partnerships, business deals and
getting ahead professionally. There
is a window of opportunity if you are
imaginative in the way you present
what you have to offer.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): You’ll
fi nd it diffi cult to make a decision
based on what you know or hear
from others. Until you have all the
facts straight in your head, don’t
make a move that could leave you
in a precarious position. Don’t take
a risk.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Put your
money into something that will
help you save. Budget wisely now
and you will look like a genius in
months to come. You can have fun
with friends and make new acquaintances
without overspending or of-
Horoscopes
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Don’t
let anyone upset you. You need
to have a clear view of what’s expected
of you at work in order to
do your best. Ask questions and
get involved in whatever will help
you get ahead. Forget about petty
arguments.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Put a
little pizzazz into whatever you do.
Get out of the house and socialize
with people who have something to
offer in return. Communication and
mingling will lead to an opportunity
you won’t want to miss.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Get
Legal guardianship may be path
for concerned grandparents
Dear Annie: We are the
grandparents of a beautiful
4-year-old girl. We have
been watching her for the
past three months because
her parents had their water
service shut off due to lack of
payment. A month ago, they
had their gas and electricity
shut off, as well. They are living
off of the welfare system
with no other means of support.
In the past, my wife and I
have paid a lot of money to
keep their utilities on, but
this time we took a stand and
decided not to. Instead, we
opted to assist in taking care
of their daughter until they
can fi x this situation, knowing
it will probably happen
again.
We want our granddaughter
to have a shot at normalcy,
and we feel she will never
get that if we return her to
her parents. Unfortunately,
my wife and I lack both the
fi nances to raise a child and
Ask Annie
the vitality necessary to keep
what to do. If we decide to
seek custody, how do we go
Dear Los Angeles: Instead
of seeking custody,
you might want to apply
