Gov. Haley Barbour eyeing top position at North Pole
IN A SURPRISE ANNOUNCEMENT,
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour announced
he is not going to run for president of the
United States. Instead, he plans on running
for the position of Santa Claus.
“As president, I would have to cut a trillion
dollars from the budget. As Santa
Claus, I get to give away a trillion in toys,”
Barbour told the Sun. “This is a no-brainer.”
Special inside sources say there are other
reasons for Barbour’s surprise announcement.
“Marsha had him drinking diet Fresca
in preparation for a presidential run,” the
source revealed. “The real no-brainer was

The 2011 legislative session begins
next month, and lawmakers will have an
opportunity to mull over one bill that will
cut funding for Mississippi Public
Broadcasting (MPB).
The bill is authored by District 58 Rep.
Rita Martinson. She said state funding
needs to be cut because money isn’t
being spent appropriately.
She points to the agency’s budget for
fiscal year 2010 as an example. “They
spent $21,000 on lunches and dinners for

WHAT AMOUNTS to roughly a dollar a
week increase for water and sewer service in
the capital city has the potential to save Jackson
millions of dollars in interest and fines down
the road.
The Jackson City Council recently approved
raising water and sewer rates by 13 percent and
six percent respectively.
Officials say the revenue generated by the
increase will allow the city to hold on to its
superior water and sewer bond rating, which
can be used to float lower interest loans for
infrastructure improvements.
Standard and Poor’s upgraded Jackson’s rating
in the spring, moving it from an A to an A+.
“Because of the rating, if Jackson issues a $76
million bond for the remaining water and sewer
repairs outlined in the 1996 master plan, we
would save about $5 million in interest over the
course of 30 years,” said Director of
Communications Chris Mims.
The rate hikes will take effect on January 1.
Residential customers should notice an $8 to
$10 increase on their bimonthly statements.
The city mails out water and sewer bills every
other month, Mims said.
On November 30, the council voted 5-1 to
raise water rates from $2.20 to $2.48 per hundred
cubic feet. Sewer rates were bumped up
from $2.03 to $2.15 for the same amount of
wastewater that is discharged back into the
city’s system.
Public Works Deputy Director David Willis
said a hundred cubic feet is equal to 748 gallons
of water.
Those voting in favor of the measure included
Ward Seven Councilwoman Margaret Barrett-
Simon, and Councilmen Frank Bluntson,
Charles Tillman, Tony Yarber and Chokwe
Lumumba. Outgoing Ward One Councilman
Jeff Weill voted against it, and Ward Three
Councilman Kenneth Stokes was absent.
The city’s bond rating is based on several factors,
including one that requires Jackson to
maintain 120 percent more than the amount of
its monthly bond payment in cash on hand,
once its day to day operations are met.
The increases will generate about $378,000 a
month in new revenue.
“In the last three years, our costs have
increased and it’s eaten into our 120 percent
coverage,” Willis said.

The governor has proposed cutting

tighten its belt as a result of the economy.
Experts have projected that the state’s
general fund budget will be more than
$300 million less than two years ago.

City better prepared to face
harsh winter weather with
improvements to system

JANUARY IS right
around the corner, and
Northsiders and city officials
alike are keeping an eye on
their thermometers and their
water pressure.
That’s because in January
2010, water mains across the
city of Jackson burst as the
area experienced 10 days of
record-low temperatures.
The breaks crippled the capital
city, causing businesses
to shut down and residents
to be without water or water
pressure for days.
But experts say below
freezing temperatures likely
won’t be a factor in the
coming month.
And Jackson city leaders,
with the crisis about a year
behind them, say they are
better prepared to address
another water crisis, and
cited several steps that are
being taken to prevent more
water system break-downs
in the future.

that being more prepared
doesn’t mean that
water main breaks couldn’t
occur once again, especially
if weather conditions don’t
play in the city’s favor.
“People have been pushing
me to put my hand on the
Bible and say ‘we’re not
going to have a problem,’
and I refuse to do it,”
Johnson said. “If we have
sub-freezing temperatures
and the soil shifts, I can’t
guarantee it won’t happen.”
IN THEIR EFFORT to
prevent another catastrophe,
officials aren’t relying on the
right weather conditions
alone to make it through the
winter.
Johnson outlined several
steps the city is taking to
lessen the severity of breaks
in the future.
During the 2010-11 fiscal
year, the city is set to spend
$29 million on water infrastructure
improvements. A
portion of those funds will
be used to install the last
segment of a 54-inch water
main to connect the J.H.
Fewell to the O.B. Curtis
water treatment plants.
“That should start at the
first of the year and take 18
to 24 months to complete,”
he said.
Johnson said having that
line in place will allow the
city to maintain pressure
during line breaks.
Maintaining some continuous
pressure keeps the city
from having to issue boil
water notices once the leaks
are patched.
Johnson said the city has
also learned more about
addressing a water crisis following
a water main break
in June. “We overcame that
quickly,” he said. “I wish
this was something we could
correct in the next six
months to a year, but it’s
not.”
But luck - and a not so
well-known weather pattern
called La Nina - might be on
the city’s side this year.
“As far as temperatures go
for January, we’re not
expecting a high chance of
seeing prolonged periods of
freezing,” said Daniel Lamb,
a meteorologist with the
National Weather Service in
Jackson.
Lamb said a La Nina pattern
has developed in the
Pacific Ocean. Because of
that, he doesn’t expect the
mercury to dip below the
mid-30s for an extended
period of time.
“What we saw last year
was prolonged lower temperatures.
In a La Nina, we
will likely experience colder
temperatures come in behind
a storm system, but they’ll
only last a day or two.”
“We’ll see a quicker
recovery to warmer temps,
but there will be more rainfall,”
Lamb said.
A La Nina occurs when
the sea surface temperatures
in the Pacific fall lower than
normal. That anomaly causes
winter temps to remain
mild in the Southeast, he
said.
“We had a La Nina in
2000, and the average temperature
was closer to 40,”
he said.
Last year, El Nino conditions
were present in the
Pacific, causing temperatures
to fall dramatically in
the Southeast.
The average temperature
for the first 10 days of
January 2010 was 29.9
degrees. That weather
caused surface water temperatures
to plummet.
That factor, coupled with
the age of the city’s infrastructure,
led to 156 main
breaks, leaving thousands of
people high and dry.

Santa Claus recently took a break from
his busy schedule to sit down and have
some cookies and milk with the Sun staff.
He had dropped by to personally pick up
some of his letters from the Northside Sun.
At his request we publish the letters to save
him time. You see, while he’s reading the
Sun he can also read the letters. While
Santa was here, the staff talked with him
about his hectic journey Christmas Eve.
Gee Santa, it seems like only yesterday we
were here in the conference room drinking
hot chocolate and talking about the same
things. It’s amazing how time flies.
“Well to you and me it seems that way.
We’re old. But to the young ones it seems
forever ago. And today is probably the
longest day of the year for them knowing
that tomorrow is Christmas Eve. I’ve got lots
of things to get done.”
Although you seem to have a great job,
it must be hard, especially around this
time of the year.
“Actually my work is easy. I have so many
great helpers in my workshop. The children
tell me exactly what they want and y’all
make it easy for me by publishing their letters.
All that is the easy part and this is the
most fun time of the year for me. The hard
part of the job comes after Christmas. You
think I’m fat and jolly now. Well on
December the 26th I’m fatter and not very
jolly. HoHoHo. I don’t know if you realize it,
but I consume thousands of calories on my
delivery. So many that from January till
about July, I’m on a very strict diet. That’s
the hard part of my job. Thank goodness
there’re not many swimming pools at the
North Pole because I wouldn’t look too good
in my bathing trunks. HoHoHo.”
Tomorrow’s the big night. Are you
ready? Is the list ready?
“Yes, we are ready. Everything is going
pretty smooth. I will be very busy and I will
not get a break until the day after Christmas.
“But we will pull it off, we always do.
“As far as the list is concerned, it is complete
thanks to our teamwork.”
Are you looking forward to all the milk
and cookies the children leave for you?
“Of course. Wouldn’t you? HoHoHo.
People are always tormenting me about my
weight. You know it’s funny, I see all these
pictures of myself in books and on TV and
I look chubby, like I do now. But if you’ll
notice, I’m always on my way to deliver
presents in the pictures. My sleigh is always
fully loaded. You never see me on my way
home. If you did, you wouldn’t recognize
me.
“I bring gifts to almost 400 million children
in more than 90 million homes around
the world. I have about 31 hours to do it,
thanks to the different time zones and the
rotation of the earth, but I still have to work
at a brutal pace. I have to eat those cookies
and drink the milk or I’d waste away to
nothing.”
Many people have come to know you
by your outfit. How did you choose it?
“Well, that’s really kind of an interesting
story. As you know, I’ve been bringing toys
to girls and boys for well over 1,500 years.
And I’ve been coming to the United States
since before it was the United States.
“I used to be a bishop of the church. Ever
since the fourth century, and up until the
19th century, I wore my bishop’s garb. It
wasn’t very comfortable, but I was proud of
my work as a bishop and liked to wear it.
“Then, in 1823, the poet Clement Clark
Moore wrote ‘The Night Before
Christmas,’ and in the 1860s, Harper’s magazine
started publishing paintings of me by
the artist Thomas Nast.
“Moore and Nast did good work. They
got most of it right, but they missed on the
outfit.
“The poem and the paintings were so
popular, though, people just expected me to
be in the furry red suit and this crazy hat, so
that’s what I started wearing.
“Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind. In
fact, this suit is warmer and I’m a lot more
comfortable now. I just think it’s funny. ‘Art
imitates life,’ they say. Ha!”
Santa, you seem a very educated man.
“Well, I guess I learned a lot on the job.
For instance, I grew up speaking a form of
what is now the Turkish language. As I
began giving gifts to children in larger and
larger areas of the world, I had to learn dif-

ferent languages.
“If I got a letter addressed to ‘Father
Christmas,’ ‘Sinter Klaas,’ ‘Pere Noel,’
‘Julenisse,’ or ‘der Weinachtsmann,’ I had
to be able to understand it. So, I learned
many different languages.
“In the same sense, I have become familiar
with many different cultures. I don’t just
blindly give children gifts they request, I
make it a point to test them first. So, I have
not given a book I did not first read, a CD I
did not first listen to, and so on. I’ve
become very well-acquainted with the different
cultures of the world and I stay up-todate
as they shift and evolve. I guess you
could say I have a pretty good vantage
point. HoHoHo.”
So, how do kids in Jackson stack up to
kids in other places? Naughtier or nicer?
And what about kids today as opposed to
other times in history?
“Good question. The level of naughtiness
in youth remains constant no matter what
point in space or time. Kids in place X are
just as nice as kids in place Y. Kids today
are just as good as ever. The statistics show
it.
“And, to tell you the truth, there aren’t
very many bad kids at all. I’ve been doing
this almost 1,700 years and I can count all
the bad kids I’ve seen on my two hands.
Sure, kids are mischievous, but even most
kids people think are bad aren’t truly bad.
They just make mistakes or they’re sometimes
misunderstood.”
What do you have planned when you
get back to the North Pole after your
rounds?
“Mrs. Claus and I have a little routine. It
has been the same for years. When I get
back, she has a big cup of tea waiting for
me. We sit by the fire and as I drink my tea,
I tell her all about my trip. Usually, some
pretty fun things happen on Christmas Eve,
so she loves to hear about it.
“After my tea, I go to bed and sleep for
about 18 hours. Those next few days is our
only vacation during the year. After a few
days off, the elves, the reindeer, Mrs. Claus
and I have a big New Year’s Eve party and
then, on January 2, we start getting ready
for Christmas all over again.”

Work to start on Lake Harbour Drive

PRELIMINARY work for the Lake
Harbour Drive widening project continues,
with crews expected to begin relocating
utilities in the coming weeks.
The Ridgeland mayor and board of
aldermen recently entered into an agreement
with Entergy to relocate approximately
30 utility poles located within
the footprint of the much-anticipated
widening project.
The agreement will cost the city
approximately $118,000. In addition to
removing the old wooden poles, that
cost will also cover replacing the old
wooden poles with new metal ones.
Mayor Gene McGee said once that
work is completed and the remaining
easements are obtained, the city can
advertise for contractors.
“I hope to have it bid out early in
2011,” he said. The mayor previously
had hoped to have the project bid out
sometime this year, so a contractor
could begin in the spring.
McGee said obtaining the easements
has been complicated for several reasons.
In one case, the city has had to
work with an out-of-state lending company.
The Internal Revenue Service had
placed a lien against another property.
“We’re in final negotiations on the
other one,” he said.
Easements, unlike rights-of-way, are
taken temporarily by governments for
projects to be completed. The properties
are repaired before they’re returned and
residents are compensated for their
inconvenience.
The $16 million project calls for transforming
the two-lane road into a fivelane
thoroughfare from Northpark Drive
to U.S. 51. A bike trail, curbs and gutters,
as well as new signalization will
also be added. In all, about 2.5 miles of
roadway is included in the project.
Work should take about two years to
complete, weather pending.
The project is being funded with an
80-20 matching grant awarded through
the Central Mississippi Planning and
Development District (CMPDD).
Because federal money is being used on
the project, all plans have to be
approved through the Mississippi
Department of Transportation (MDOT).
According to the Ridgeland Area
Master Plan (RAMP), the road would
run south of Freedom Ridge Park and
possibly allow for another entrance into
the popular public facility.
Earlier this year, the city hired
Bulldog Construction for $84,000 to
complete the demolition work for the
project. In all about 14 homes were
identified as needed for the project to be
a success. Residents in each home were
relocated to other spots in the city.
CMPDD identified Lake Harbour as a
top priority for the metro area in its
2030 Jackson Urbanized Area
Transportation Plan. It is one of a few
east-west corridors located in the fastgrowing
southern section of Madison
County. The transportation plan is
updated every five years by the planning
district. It lays out road projects
that ideally should be completed in the
30-year period to meet the demands of
the region’s growing population.

N’sider dragged down North
State Street for $150, purse

CRIMINALS left a
woman stunned and prostrate
in the middle of North
State Street, having been
dragged 100 yards by a car
following a late-night
purse-snatching in Fondren.
The robbers had grabbed
the woman’s purse as they
drove by her as she was
leaving a restaurant. She
was unable to release the
straps from her shoulder and
was dragged behind the car,
her legs simultaneously
bumping the wheel and the
pavement. Fortunately, the
road was recently paved and
the victim had no serious
injuries. A chain e-mail
report claimed the robbers
were laughing as they
dragged the woman up
North State Street. She was
able to free herself in front
of the old Precinct Four
building.
The victim’s husband confirmed
that his wife had
heard laughing. He declined
to comment to the Sun further
regarding the situation.
On Monday afternoon,
Jackson Police spokeswoman
Colendula Green
would neither confirm nor
deny that a suspect had been
named in the case.

The woman was taken to
the University of Mississippi
Medical Center, where she
was treated for minor
scrapes and bruises.
According to e-mails
obtained by the Sun, the victim
suffered no broken
bones and no head or face
injuries. “She did suffer
scrapes to her left shoulder,
back and hands. She was
wearing some tall leather
boots, which protected her
feet and legs during the
attack,” the e-mail stated.
The incident occurred
around 9:30 or 10 p.m. The
woman was released from
the hospital around 2:30 the
next morning.
The suspects got away
with the woman’s purse,
three credit cards and $150
in cash.
The couple is from
Ridgeland. The husband,
who was reached by telephone,
declined to com-

at Lipscomb University.
He has worked in public
accounting and commercial
lending and will focus his
practice on auditing and

multicolored shirt. The passenger
was also a black
male, but no further details
were available. Watts said
video surveillance obtained
from the scene provided little
information as well.

and said she is “doing OK
under the circumstances,”
and was “in unbelievably

Latham said the restaurant

well as a security guard on
duty during business hours.
Cameras also blanket the
inside and outside of the
Latin American eatery.
The security guard was
apparently inside during the
December 11 incident.
“We’ll make sure the security
guard is parked so he
can see everyone when they
leave the restaurant and
walk to their cars,” he said.
“I can assure you, we’re on
top of this.”

Madison accepting bids
to create new town center Bethlehem tree

PLANS ARE still a go for a project that
will create a new retail and recreational hub
in Madison’s downtown corridor.
City officials are slated to open bids for the
Madison square on January 18.
Community Development Director Alan
Hoops said the city has had a good bit of
interest in the project, and expects three or
four bids to be submitted for consideration.
Originally, the city, along with the Madison
Square Redevelopment Authority (MSRA),
was planning to open bids in mid-August.
However, the deadline for proposals was
extended at the request of two or three interested
parties.
Since the deadline was extended, Hoops
said the city has received several new
inquiries into the project. Most of those
showing interest are from out of state. “I had
someone get in touch with me last week, and
I sent him an RFP,” he said. An RFP is a
request for proposals.
The square will be located on roughly 17
acres of land bordered by Madison Avenue,
U.S. 51, Main Street and Magnolia Street.
MSRA purchased the property on behalf of
the city years ago, with plans to develop it in
the future.
Madison city officials recently brought on
Memphis architect Henry Frank Ricks to
draw up a master plan for the property.
According to a copy of the 25-page master
plan, Ricks envisions a project with professional
and retail space, spots for restaurants, a
120-room boutique hotel and a 25,000square-foot
specialty grocery store.
The square will also include a large public
green space, a main street retail and restaurant
district and an area for city government.
Space will be set aside for a 1,600-seat performing
arts center, a public library and an
18,000-square-foot city hall.
Tulane University, which is currently locat-
ed in part of the old Madison Square Center
for the Arts, will be given an opportunity to
build a permanent facility on the square once
its lease expires. Right now, the New Orleans
school is operating a satellite campus in the
city as part of a three-year pilot program.
If the program is successful, the school will
consider opening a permanent satellite campus
in the city.
A MAJOR FOCAL point of the development
will be a grassy area called the town
square.
Ricks states that the spot “is both the geographic
center of the urban core and heart of
the property.” The plan states that it could
include not only green space, but a civic
pavilion and amphitheater, making it perfect
for meetings and outdoor events like concerts,
picnics, and arts and crafts fairs.
Another public park would be located on
the northeast corner of the property near
Main Street.
In addition to green space, Ricks proposes
a new main street district, to run along a
street parallel to Highway 51.
The street would be a pedestrian-friendly
retail and restaurant hub, with large sidewalks,
trees and landscaping, as well as
pedestrian benches, street lamps, directory
kiosks and signage. Ricks said both national
and local retailers and restaurateurs would be
included in the mix.
RFPs were issued by the city in July.
Developers interested in submitting a proposal
are asked to include a statement that says
whether or not they are planning to lease or
buy the property; a description of the development
team; a statement of qualifications;
and details about their vision for the project.
Hoops said the RFPs will give the city an
idea of what types of retailers builders hope
to bring to the area. “We’re not interested in
just any retailer, it has to be a right fit for
Madison,” he said.

In 2008, about $4.9 billion was in the
state’s general fund. For 2011, that amount
will drop to roughly $4.58 billion.
Even with the one-time 20 percent reduction,
Martinson said MPB will receive $6.8
million in taxpayers’ dollars.
MARTINSON has also authored bills to
make it easier for students to obtain the
Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant
(MESG), require residents to pass vision
screenings every other time they get their
driver’s license renewed, as well as a bill
that will allow school districts to include
GED recipients when calculating graduation
rates.
“(Madison County Superintendent) Mike
Kent asked me about this,”she said. “If a
person drops out of school and decides to
go to a community college and get a GED,
the district doesn’t get any credit. But the
biggest portion of their education still happened
in one particular school district.”
She said graduation rates affect a school’s
accreditation, as well as a district’s bragging
rights.
Kent said schools receive star status and
other recognition based on a formula called
the High School Completer Index.
A school will receive 300 points for each
child who graduates high school. If a child
doesn’t graduate, the school loses 300
points. If a student gets a GEDthrough the
district, the district receives 150 points.
However, if a student decides to go to a
community college to obtain their high
school equivalency, the school gets zero
points.
Although Kent said Madison Central and
Ridgeland High both have graduation rates
in the upper 90 percent range, he does
believe the scoring system should be
changed.

points short of graduating. Summer school
is 37 days long and four hours a day, it’s
pretty grueling,” he said. “Instead of doing
that, the student can go over to Holmes
Community College and get his or her
GED.
“We should get credit for those who go
that route. Who got them to the point where
they could get their GED? We did,”he said.
Kent said Madison Central and
Ridgeland High School both have obtained
star status as a result of having a high completer
index.
ANOTHER BILL, if passed, would
remove the GPArequirement for students
seeking the state’s eminent scholars grant.
According to the Mississippi Institutions
of Higher Learning Web site, students can
receive up to $2,500 a year for tuition
through the program.
Eligible students must be a legal resident
of the state for one year prior to high school
graduation; score a minimum of 29 on the
ACT or a minimum of 1280 on the SAT

approved institution in Mississippi; and
have a cumulative grade point average of
3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Martinson believes the GPArequirement
is unfair because grade point averages are
calculated differently at some schools. For
example, she said some high schools have
weighted courses, which count for five,
instead of four points. She also points to the
fact that some students taking advanced
placement courses might have a lower GPA
than students taking regular courses,
because their academic work is more rigorous.
Martinson proposed the bill last year,
but it died in committee.

Suspects arrested in string
of N’side auto burglaries

RIDGELAND police have
captured four suspects
involved in a string of auto
burglaries and thefts on
County Line Road.
And they were caught in
the act. What’s more is police
say the crooks are tied to a
series of burglaries in
Northeast Jackson.
On December 10,
Ridgeland authorities arrested
Jackson residents Eddie
Miller, Alvin Lacey, Patrick
Burnett and Kenyatta Stubbs
in connection with two auto
break-ins and two auto thefts
in the parking lot of Tico’s
Steakhouse, at 1536 East
County Line Rd.
The suspects are being held
at the Madison County Jail.
Miller, Lacey and Stubbs are
each being charged with
three counts of auto burglary,
two counts of motor vehicle
theft, one count of receiving
stolen property and one
count of possession of a
firearm by a convicted felon.
They are each being held on
a $350,000 bond.
Burnett is facing all of the
charges, minus the charge for
possession of a weapon by a
felon. He is being held on a
$300,000 bond.
All charges are felonies,
said Ridgeland Police Lt.
John Neal.

burglaries in North Jackson.
“We called JPD and told
them that we had them in
custody and asked if JPD
would like to send an investigator
up to talk to them,”
Neal said.
The suspects were driving
a 2000 model Chevrolet
Suburban, a vehicle that also
fit the description of the car

items, however, did fit the
description of several things
stolen from North Jackson.
Precinct Four Cmdr.
Wendell Watts believes the
four were involved in eight
or nine burglaries in the
Rolling Meadows, Lake
Trace and Northpointe areas.
On the night of December
9, burglaries were reported
on Rolling Meadows Drive,
Moss Forest Circle,
Northlake Circle, Kristen
Drive, Northpointe Cove,
Plantation Boulevard and
Northpointe Parkway.
“They stole items from
sheds and cars,” Watts said.
Neal didn’t know what the
suspects will be charged with
in Hinds County. The four
were expected to appear in
Ridgeland Municipal Court
on December 21 for their
preliminary hearing.

Obituaries
Byron Kelly Green
Memorial services were held December 15 in
the sanctuary of First Baptist Church for Byron
K. ‘Buck’ Green.
Green, 92, died of heart failure December 12
at the Lake Lorman home of his loving daughter
and beloved son-in-law.
Green, affectionately called ‘Buck’ by all who
knew him, was born in Leakesville July 10, 1918. After
graduation from Leakesville High School, he attended
Mississippi State University until World War II prompted
him in January of 1942 to enlist in the United States Navy.
He served in the Pacific Theatre as Yeoman First Class on a
destroyer, the USS PURDY, and was part of the initial landing
force on the island of Tarawa. He later was awarded the
Bronze Star and Navy Unit Commendation Medal for ‘outstanding
heroism’ during the battle of Okinawa.
After honorable discharge from the Navy, he went to work
for the Standard Oil Company, where he met and married
his wife of 55 years, Martha Kennedy of Magee, who predeceased
him in 2003. In 1954, he founded Central Heating
Company, which he built into one of the top five residential
mechanical contractors in the Southeast, serving as its president
until his retirement in 1978.
Green was a deacon and faithful member of First Baptist
Jackson for more than 65 years, serving on numerous committees.
He was a major supporter of the Revelation Choir
youth music ministry, accompanying them on mission trips
in the United States and Europe. In the realm of civic activities,
he was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Order of
the Jesters, and was cofounder of the Buck and Wing
Hunting Club near Port Gibson. He and his wife, Martha,
were active supporters of the Jackson Symphony League.
Buck Green was blessed with exceptional people skills,
‘never met a stranger,’ and his positive attitude, along with
his quick and unfailing sense of humor, endeared him to
adults and children of literally all ages.
In addition to his wife, Martha, he was preceded in death
by his parents, Hubert Lavender and Edna Killian Green,
brother Frank Green, and sister Mickey Green Brunson. He
leaves cherished loving memories to his only daughter Beth
Green Dean, son-in-law Richard M. Dean, and grandsons
Morgan and Carson Dean, all of Madison; nephews Mark
Green (Sherye) and Bert Green (Rhonda) of Jackson; niece
Darian Gibson of Ridgeland; nephew Bill Brunson (Tricia)
of Austin; niece Cindy Brunson of Madison; nephew
Richard Furr (Robin) of Wesson; niece Ann Tornyos (Karl)
of Houston, Texas; numerous great-nephews and nieces; and
dedicated caregiver Dipti Suthar of Ridgeland.
Pallbearers were Morgan Byron Dean, Carson Kennedy
Dean, Richard Kennedy Furr, Hubert Franklin Green Jr.,
Hubert Franklin Green III, Mark Richard Green, Mark
Richard Green Jr., Lt. U.S. Navy, and Richard Lewis
Ridgway Jr. Honorary pallbearers were the Rev. Larry
Black, William C. Brunson, Gray Hilsman, Charles Hood,
Horace Kerr, Granville Tate, Gene Tolley and the Explorers
Sunday School Class.

Jane Eliza Luter Comfort
Graveside services were held December 17 at Lakewood
Memorial Park for Jane Eliza Luter Comfort of the reservoir
area.
Mrs. Comfort, 51, a longtime Jackson area resident, died
December 15, at River Oaks Hospital.
She grew up in Jackson, attended Duling Elementary
School, and was graduated from Woodland Hills Baptist
Academy.
She was graduated from Mississippi College with a
bachelor’s degree in education and worked in the daycare
field. She participated in Explorers Bible Study at Christ
United Methodist Church taught by her cousin, Becky
Luter Howell of Clinton. She was a member of First
Baptist Church of Jackson.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs.
J.C. Luter Jr.
Survivors are her husband Randy Comfort and son
Randall both of the Reservoir area; brother Jesse (Jay)
Crawford Luter III and his wife Cecelia of Laurel; brother
George Scott Luter and his wife Janie of Jackson; sister
Nell Luter Floyd of Ridgeland; and numerous nieces and
nephews.

Don Grillo
A funeral mass was conducted at St.
Richard Catholic Church December 20 for
Don Grillo of Jackson.
Dr. Grillo, 77, passed away December 16
at Baptist Medical Center.
A native of New York, Grillo was a graduate
of Columbia University and Albany Medical College.
He retired as a colonel from the United States Air Force.
He helped establish the first ob-gyn residency at Keesler
Air Force Base where he taught gynaco pathology and
became chairman.
After retirement, Dr. Grillo worked for 20 years with the
Mississippi Department of Health, where he established
the first statewide ultrasound and mammogram program
for health department patients. During his career in
Jackson, he taught midwives, nurses, UMC Family
Medicine and Ob-Gyn residents. He served as District
Five health officer for many years.
Survivors are his wife of 53 years Lee Grillo; daughter
Frances Hess and her husband Trey of Ridgeland; sons
Kevin Grillo of Houston, Texas, and Thomas Grillo of
Jackson; the light of his life, grandchildren Katie and Beth
Hess; and sister Louise Viola of New York.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and
Mary Grillo; brother Joseph Grillo; and sister Molly
Ciminelli.
Memorials may be made to the American Kidney
Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
Interment was at Natchez Trace Memorial Park
Cemetery.

William Bryant Ridgway
A family graveside service was held at
Lakewood Memorial Park December 16 for
William Bryant Ridgway of Madison. A
Celebration of Life service was held at Galloway
Memorial United Methodist Church.
Ridgway, 91, died December 13 at St. Catherine’s Village.
Ridgway was born in Jackson February 12, 1919, and was
graduated from Jackson Central High School in 1936. He
attended Millsaps College and was a 1940 graduate of the
University of Mississippi. He was a member of Kappa
Alpha Order.
In October 1941, Ridgway joined the United States Army
Air Corps. He was an instructor for advanced pilot training
for two years, then served as a B-24 Liberator pilot attached
to the 467th Bomb Group with the 8th Air Force in
Rackheath, England. He flew 14 combat missions before the
war in Europe ended in May 1945. He was honorably discharged
from active duty in the Air Force in October 1945,
but continued service in the U.S. Air Force Reserves until
October 1968, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel.
After returning to civilian life, Ridgway was graduated
from the Jackson School of Law in 1947, and was admitted
to the bar. He was a real estate broker, a principal in
Ridgway Management Inc., and was active in the oil and
gas, real estate and timber businesses. He was an active
member of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church
for 85 years, where he served on the visitation committee,
delivered meals on wheels, taught Sunday School, served as
lay leader and chairman of the administrative board.
Ridgway was a member of the Monday Morning Bible
Study Group at Galloway for almost 40 years, and served on
the board of the Methodist Children’s Home. He served as
president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Men’s Y
Club, and the Jackson Central Lions Club. He served one
term in the Mississippi House of Representatives as a representative
for Hinds and Yazoo counties.
Ridgway was a charter member of the River Hills Club,
where he enjoyed weekly tennis games until age 80. He was
a member of the Chancellor’s Trust at the University of
Mississippi, and he was a passionate fan of Ole Miss football.
He loved time with family and friends, enjoyed traveling,
hiking, and fishing, and believed serving anyone in need
was a privilege. He felt blessed beyond measure each day of
his life.
Ridgway was the son of Charles Robert Ridgway Jr. and
Hattie Lewis Ridgway. He was pre-deceased by his daughter,
Patricia Ann Ridgway, his parents, sisters Alice Blount
and Ruth Boswell, and brothers Richard Ridgway and
Walter Stevens Ridgway II.
Survivors are Juanita Wallace Ridgway, his loving wife of
60 years; son William Bryant Ridgway Jr., and his wife,
Creed; daughter Ruth Ridgway West and her husband Eric;
son Douglas Wallace Ridgway and wife Deana; son James
Lewis Ridgway; grandchildren William Bryant Ridgway III,
Mary Kathryn Ridgway, Shannon Grace West, and Haley
Elizabeth West; and by his older brother Charles Robert
Ridgway III.
The family would like to thank the caregiving teams at St.
Catherine’s Village and Odyssey Hospice for providing genuine
loving and compassionate care. Dad loved, appreciated,
and treasured your friendship.

Celebrate 60
Bill and Carroll Waller were married November 11, 1950 at
First Baptist Church Jackson. A 60th anniversary reception
was held at the church recently by their children, Bill and
Charlotte Waller, Bob and Margaret Waller, Eddy and Bae
Waller, and Don and Yonnie Waller. Bill and Carroll, except
for his service during the Korean War, have lived their
entire married life in northeast Jackson. Son Eddy could
not be present because he is currently on active duty in
Afghanistan with the 184th TCE, Mississippi Army National
Guard. All 14 grandchildren attended the celebration.
FRANCE BEARD was

County Outstanding Teen
2011. She is the 16-yearold
daughter of Ann and
Clay Beard of Madison.

Gardening Glimpses
Christmas treasures frequently arrive under
the tree in recognizable shape and heft
ALL MY LIFE Christmas has meant
new books. For the last half of that lifetime,
the favorites have been the newest
(or rarest, or oldest, or hardest to find) gardening
books, about plants and by and
about the people who love them and grow
them well, who share their interesting horticultural
adventures and what they have
learned.
I’ve good reason to be confident about
some packages of recognizable shape and
heft already under the tree. But meanwhile,
I’ve been enjoying a brand new gardening
book for two months now - Ray Rogers’
“The Encyclopedia of Container Plants.”
It’s good to sit down regularly for coffee
with a good friend, but usually hard to
manage from New Jersey to Mississippi.
But thanks to the still-potent magic of the
printed page, it can be managed. Most
mornings since the first of October, I’ve
enhanced my first and second cups of coffee
with a dip into this book.
By its nature, any encyclopedic book is
best enjoyed and absorbed in small snatches,
as well as staying handy for answers to
odd or even very basic questions about
plants. I’ve been needing a reliable basic
reference for container plants for many
years, and had never found a satisfactory
one - until now. (I wish I’d had this book,
a few years ago, when my great pleasure
in Allen Lacy’s and Nancy Goodwin’s “A
Year in Our Gardens,” needed only some
knowledge of the new plants they were
sharing to make it perfect.)
FIVE HUNDRED PLANTS, gorgeous
pictures on nearly all of the 340-plus
pages, and in-depth information about all
of the entries. And since to Ray, every
plant on the planet is potentially a container
plant, worlds of useful gardening information
about plants we also grow outdoors
in our climate.
This book is a highly successful team
effort between the author and the photographer,
Rob Cardillo. I asked Ray, “Do you
write the book and then ask Rob to go take
the accompanying pictures, or do you
browse through what he already has in his
vast store of garden pictures and make
choices?”
“Both,” he replied. “Rob is very cooperative
about looking for something, for anything
that I need, or think I need. But he
has a keen eye for the great plant combinations,
the containers placed in just the right
spot.” This isn’t a yearbook collection of
head-on plant portraits, one after another
into the sunset. These are pictures of
plants, in lovely traditional or offbeat containers,
as you could use them.
Cardillo, in the front of the book,
expresses his appreciation to the garden of
Chanticleer in Wayne, Pa., “where poems
are written with plants.” This tribute merely
reinforces the status of Chanticleer as
number one on my list of gardens to visit
which I’ve not yet seen.”
Ray is an excellent writer (you don’t get
published by Timber Press if you are not)
but a thoroughly educated horticulturist,
with not just the requisite school background
but also the assimilated learning
from a lifetime of continuing education
working with plants. He expresses his
appreciation to Ken Selody II, the owner
of Atlock Farm in Somerset, N.J., a unique
specialty nursery, where he lets Ray work
his imaginative magic on the container
plants, and, I suspect, much of the landscaping
in season.
FOR MOST OF US, Christmas or our
birthday is the highlight of the year. For
Ray, it is the week each spring of the venerable
and spectacular Philadelphia Flower
Show. So he knows each year, probably
every month, what’s new and desirable in
the plant world. But he has a good memory,
too, of his own experiences with the
“Grandmother’s garden” plants that many
of us cherish and depend on.
He feels obligated to use the latest
approved garden plant terminology and
botanical classification. Here I mostly
ignore him, and freely tell him so. It took
me 30 years to accept “pothos” as the

proper name for my beloved houseplants
which I’d grown up calling “philodendron.”
I simply refuse to shift over to
“epipremnum.” (Have you noticed that
every time the botanical scholars reclassify
plants, it is always into a category even
harder to spell?)
One thing this book is definitely not -
bedtime reading. It’s much too heavy, but
also it is likely to inspire you to get up and
make lists, or stay awake planning your
own new plant combinations. (I wish Ray
would someday write his own paperback,
non-illustrated book about the gardens and
gardeners he has known in a plant-dedicated
lifetime, one with decades left of active
gardening.)
But if you have a smidgen of the gardening
gene, you will enjoy having this book:
“The Encyclopedia of Container Plants.” It
serves admirably much of the time as the
requisite hefty and lavishly illustrated coffee-table
book we often need to display.
But it’s always handy for you to enjoy and
absorb bits of gardening ideas, especially
valuable in this gloomy, dreary season of
the year.
