6A – Fuquay-Varina Independent, Wednesday, February 1, 2012 Carolina Bead celebrates 5 years in Varina In our troubled economy, it is always exciting when a community business gets to celebrate a milestone. And this is no different for Cliff and Colleen Deming, owners of Carolina Bead Company located in the beautiful downtown Varina retail district. “It’s very exciting that we have been able to weather the recession and keep Carolina Bead open and thriving,” says Colleen, “We are the oldest remaining original tenant of Varina Station, which gives us some longevity in the community, and we are very proud of that.” Carolina Bead Company opened on February 7, 2007 as a collaborative partnership for two families. One family was the creative entrepreneur-minded side of the business, and Colleen and Cliff went into the operation as an investment. The Demings were working full-time in other career fields, but wanted to open a business for extra income and the long-term potential of a successful retail opportunity. In pre-recession 2007, this was quite common. The operation was a hands-on, familyoriented project from the start. Doing most of the upfitting themselves, the Demings and their partners painted, built cabine- Kipling - Max Dayton Smith, Sr., 90, died Tuesday, January 24, 2012. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 27, at Kipling United Methodist Church with interment following at the Smith Family Cemetery in Kipling. Mr. Smith was the son of the late Reid and Maggie Senter Smith. He was born in Kipling in Harnett County on April 30, 1921. He graduated from LaFayette High School in 1939 and attended Elon College. After school he held several different jobs but came back to Kipling to work with his father and brother in the family’s general merchandise store. He married Evelyn Ashworth of Fuquay Springs in 1943. He later became Postmaster at Kipling and retired in 1987 after 33 years of service. During this time he also began a successful photography business, Dayton Smith Photography, Inc. He photographed more than 1600 weddings before closing the business in January 2007 after 37 years. Dayton Smith try, strung beads for display, and decorated everything themselves. They had not expected to open in February of 2007, but their potential customers kept coming to the door and asking when they were opening, so they finally decided to respond to public pressure and open a couple of weeks early. Their customers have been very faithful ever since. “It takes a lot to run a business,” explains Cliff. “But we love Fuquay-Varina and our customers make it worthwhile. Without them, we couldn’t have made it work.” The partners hired their first employee, Kylene Boerner, in September 2007 when she turned 14. “Kylene’s brother was one of our first customers,” Colleen laughs. “He bought her a gift card and she wanted to work for us immediately, but we had to wait until she was of legal age to hire her. She’s been with us ever since!” Then 2008 and the economic fallout that followed it changed the landscape quite a bit. The troubles that hit other businesses didn’t hit Carolina Bead Company at first. People were trying to save money, so the store stayed busy with customers who were making Christmas and birthday He was a long time member of Kipling United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Ashworth Smith in 2003; a son, Mark S. Smith in 1969; brothers, Howard C. Smith and Hoke Smith and a sister, Margaret R. Smith. He is survived by sons, Max Smith and wife, Bonnie and Dan Smith all of Kipling; grandson, Dustin Smith and wife, Betsy of Cary; great grandsons, Braden and Lukas Smith; brother, Robert DAYTON SMITH Lee Smith and wife, Rose of Wilmington; sister, Helen S. Fisher of Liberty, Missouri. The family received friends from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26 at Thomas Funeral Home, 401 N. New yoga class begins Feb. 14 Linda Wishart believes that “community is stronger than willpower.” That is why the yoga teacher is joining ranks with Yoga On Main in Fuquay-Varina. Linda has a passion for yoga and wants to share that with others. While she enjoys practicing yoga on her own, she said it is enjoyable within a class. “I’m hoping we can all grow together,” she said. Linda moved with her family to Fuquay- Varina from Arkansas in August. She has trained in the Kripalu style of yoga. The owners worked hard to create opportunities to drive customers into the store, such as creating teacher appreciation gifts for local schools and offering events that combined socializing and beading, like Ladies Nights and “The Bead Bar,” where customers could bead and chat or eat at the same time. It wasn’t until about 2010 that the business started to feel the effects of the unpredictable retail market. With the bottom line becoming trickier to manage, the Demings bought out their partners in late 2010 and took over the nuts and bolts of running the business. “It’s been tough running a business on top of our full-time jobs and raising active kids,” Colleen admits. “We have to trust and rely on our staff to run things while we’re at work or out with the kids, but we have wonderful employees like Kylene and our store manager, Anna Hobgood, who is very techsavvy and keeps our webpage updated and keeps us active on Facebook.” And with the improvements in online banking and social media marketing, Colleen and Cliff find it much easier to run the store than in years past when bookkeeping and marketing had Sarah Bell Clark, 80 of Bunnlevel died Sunday, January 29, 2012 at E. Carlton Powell Hospice Center in Lillington. A native of Harnett County, she was the daughter of the late Colin and Dovie West and was preceded in death by her husband Elbert Clark. Wake Academy students excel in State Testing Rosa Fattahi Correspondent Faculty members at Southern Wake Academy, a tuition-free charter high school in the Fuquay-Varina/ Holly Springs area, were overjoyed this week when they received news that 100 percent of their students enrolled in Algebra I, Biology, and English I passed the 2011-2012 North Carolina End-of-Course standardized tests. Southern Wake Academy, serving students in Grades 9-12, is the only charter high school in the southern Wake County region and specializes in small classes and community involvement. Parents and teachers are delighted with the students’ outstanding performance, which can be credited in part to the extraordinary efforts of Southern Wake Academy’s committed staff and teachers. Southern Wake Academy provides extracurricular activities designed to ensure students’ educational success, such as providing after-school group and individual tutorial sessions as well as encouraging and facilitating strong parental involvement in students’ academic progress. Southern Wake Academy Director Carroll Reed commended the students’ achievement and the efforts of the faculty. “We are extremely proud of our students and teachers for their hard work that resulted in a 100 percent pass rate.
