Downtown Rotary makes gift to Grandparents As Parents<br />

The <strong>Fuquay</strong>-<strong>Varina</strong> Downtown Rotary presented<br />

framed individual photos of children with Santa taken<br />

<strong>at</strong> the Southern Regional Grandparents As Parents,<br />

(GAP) Christmas party. The FV-Downtown Rotary<br />

don<strong>at</strong>ed the Santa, photography, processing and framing<br />

to provide each grandparent a photo of their child<br />

with Santa.<br />

Southern Regional Grandparents As Parents, (GAP)<br />

<strong>was</strong> founded in 2005 by Bill and Ruth Cole. As of 2012<br />

there are approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 10 families and 30 children<br />

involved in the program. They met <strong>at</strong> the <strong>Fuquay</strong>-<br />

<strong>Varina</strong> Presbyterian Church and are a Christian based<br />

Jan. 15-21<br />

Arrests<br />

Derrick Jarrod Grimsley, 19, of <strong>Fuquay</strong>-<br />

<strong>Varina</strong> <strong>was</strong> arrested Jan. 15 on a failure to<br />

appear on a misdemeanor charge.<br />

Arthur Zachary Davis, 29, of Raleigh <strong>was</strong><br />

arrested Jan. 15 on driving while impaired,<br />

driving while a license <strong>was</strong> revoked and possession<br />

of a controlled substance charges.<br />

Thomas Allen Williford, 34, of <strong>Fuquay</strong>-<br />

<strong>Varina</strong> <strong>was</strong> arrested Jan. 17 on a worthless<br />

check charge.<br />

Steven Doyle Frost, 25, of Durham <strong>was</strong><br />

arrested Jan. 17 on a failure to appear charge.<br />

Walter Lee Daugherty Jr., 42, of Durham<br />

<strong>was</strong> arrested Jan. 17 on a failure to appear<br />

charge.<br />

Robert Louis Kline, 34, of <strong>Fuquay</strong>-<strong>Varina</strong><br />

<strong>was</strong> arrested Jan. 17 on a simple assault<br />

charge.<br />

Kristopher Michael Coville, 18, of <strong>Fuquay</strong>-<br />

<strong>Varina</strong> <strong>was</strong> arrested Jan. 18 on a prob<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

viol<strong>at</strong>ion charge.<br />

co-founder Ruth Cole explained, “GAP provides a place<br />

for grandparents to meet, to cry, to exchange inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

about resources, schools or to just have someone<br />

to talk too, to have a break.”<br />

The organiz<strong>at</strong>ion’s gre<strong>at</strong>est need is for respite for<br />

the grandparents, because most of the grandchildren<br />

have special needs. FV Presbyterian Church provides a<br />

place for GAP to meet, childcare during meetings and<br />

a Christmas Party and gifts.<br />

Mary Bethal is the church’s represent<strong>at</strong>ive and<br />

extends herself on a regular basis.<br />

Wake Academy<br />

students excel<br />

in St<strong>at</strong>e Testing<br />

Faculty members <strong>at</strong> Southern Wake Academy, a<br />

tuition-free charter high school in the <strong>Fuquay</strong>-<strong>Varina</strong>/<br />

Holly Springs area, were overjoyed this week when<br />

they received news th<strong>at</strong> 100 percent of their students<br />

enrolled in Algebra I, Biology, and English I passed<br />

the 2011-2012 <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> End-of-Course standardized<br />

tests. Southern Wake Academy, serving students<br />

in Grades 9-12, is the only charter high school<br />

in the southern Wake County region and specializes<br />

in small classes and community involvement.<br />

Parents and teachers are delighted with the students’<br />

outstanding performance, which can be credited<br />

in part to the extraordinary efforts of Southern<br />

Wake Academy’s committed staff and teachers.<br />

Southern Wake Academy provides extracurricular<br />

activities designed to ensure students’ educ<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

success, such as providing after-school group and<br />

individual tutorial sessions as <strong>well</strong> as encouraging and<br />

facilit<strong>at</strong>ing strong parental involvement in students’<br />

academic progress.<br />

Southern Wake Academy Director Carroll Reed<br />

commended the students’ achievement and the efforts<br />

of the faculty. “We are extremely proud of our students<br />

and teachers for their hard work th<strong>at</strong> resulted in a 100<br />

percent pass r<strong>at</strong>e. This achievement level reflects th<strong>at</strong><br />

our students’ families have given educ<strong>at</strong>ion a high<br />

priority. We also commend our teaching staff for their<br />

dedic<strong>at</strong>ion and willingness to do ‘wh<strong>at</strong>ever it takes’ to<br />

make such a gre<strong>at</strong> accomplishment possible.”<br />

More Southern Wake Academy students will take<br />

the End-of-Course tests again <strong>at</strong> the end of May. With<br />

the second semester beginning this week, the school’s<br />

faculty is already working and making prepar<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

to guarantee the continued success of its students.<br />
