at the Kelly-Kelton Fire 

Department substation has 

led Union County Sheriff 

David Taylor to ask the State 

Law Enforcement Division 

(SLED) to take over the 

investigation. 

In a statement released 

Monday morning, Taylor said 

he’d called in SLED because

when a fire destroyed 

their home at 1216 Sardis 

Road, Union, shortly before 

midnight Friday. Betenbaugh

This house at 1216 Sardis Road, Union, was 

destroyed by fire late Friday night leaving a family 

of five homeless. Johnny Betenbaugh, his son 

Michael, and granddaughter Cile were able to 

escape the blaze without injury but lost everything 

to the fire. They and Cile’s siblings Skylar and 

Cody will now be staying at a house provided by Ed 

and Nina Greer and their family. The Sardis community, 

particularly the congregation of Sardis 

United Methodist Church, is working to provide the 

Betenbaughs with clothing, shoes, and furniture.

JONESVILLE — The Potter’s 

Storehouse continues to grow as its 

food distribution program begins its 

biggest year yet. 

Pastor Don Moore reported nearly 

800 families were served over the 

weekend through home deliveries 

on Friday and traditional distribution 

event at The Potters Storehouse 

(TPS) on Saturday. Moore said he 

won’t know the official number of 

individuals in those families until he 

receives a report at the end of the 

month. During the month of January, 

TPS supplied food to 5,959 people in 

Union County. 

Saturday’s event was the first to be 

held at the new start time of 10 a.m. 

“We’ve been encouraging them 

not to come so early and have to 

wait outside so long in the winter 

months,” Moore said, explaining that 

the response has been a positive one. 

“They’re beginning to realize that 

even if they get there at 11 a.m., they 

are still going to get food.” 

Moore also said many of the items 

distributed Saturday were donated by 

Dollar General. 

“Dollar General really loaded us 

up,” he said. “We had one section of

Wednesday to give the university 

a voice during the annual Carolina

wife, mother and grandmother.

Sis has her drink taken by a bully 

Sis was sitting at the bar, just looking 

at her drink. She just keeps staring 

at the drink for about an hour. One of 

the great big local bullies comes up 

and takes her drink and chugs it down. 

Then Sis started to cry. “Come 

on woman, I don’t like to see a 

grown woman cry. I’ll buy you 

another drink,” says the man. 

Sis said, “No, it’s not that, this 

has been the worst day of my 

life. First, I get to work late and 

my boss fired me. When I leave 

the building to go to my car, it was 

stolen. The police advised me to get a 

cab home. Well someone had stolen my 

wallet and my credit cards. When I get 

home I find Hoyt in the bed with the 

maid. I leave home and come to this 

bar, and when I was thinking about putting 

an end to my life, you come up and 

drink my poison!!”

Gaffney, S.C. Anyone interested

filing the Free Application for 

Federal Student Aid (FAFSA),

Obama can stop Israel 

from attacking Iran 

Israel’s highest officials tell 

American journalists their air 

force may attack Iran’s nuclear 

facilities this spring, although 

Israeli and American intelligence 

agencies say the

The officials 

might be bluffing, 

but the threats pose 

a problem for the 

Obama administration. In recent 

weeks there has been much inperson 

contact between the 

governments. U.S. officials have 

reportedly asked Israel to give 

harsh economic sanctions (and 

perhaps covert warfare) a chance 

to take effect. 

The problem is that an attack 

could bring Iranian retaliation 

against American military 

forces in the region, including 

Afghanistan, wreak havoc with 

the U.S. economy if Iran closes 

or mines the Strait of Hormuz 

(through which much oil passes 

daily), and create pressure for 

U.S. intervention if Iran strikes 

Israel. 

The Obama administration 

appears unenthusiastic about a 

war with Iran in this election 

year. An oil disruption would 

shake the fragile economy and 

jeopardize President Obama’s 

One major problem with writing 

political commentary is that 

it’s often difficult look at something 

that seems … well, crazy … 

and find a rational explanation 

for it. It’s easier to 

just write off what 

looks like craziness 

as craziness and 

move on. But in the 

real world, there is 

in fact method to 

most people’s mad- 

ness. This applies even to politicians 

who have apparently gone 

off their badly-needed psychiatric 

meds. 

So, when a global empire 

which has come to grief in Asian 

land wars twice in one decade 

appears to be going all-out to get 

itself into a third such war — this 

time with a country more militarily 

advanced than, and with three 

times the population of, either of 

the locations of the previous two 

debacles, and at least tentatively 

allied with three world powers 

(Russia, China and India) — one 

must resist the temptation to 

reelection. The administration 

seems to be betting that the 

American people are war-weary, 

which explains its announcement 

of an ahead-of-schedule mid-2013 

combat troop drawdown from 

Afghanistan. Obama is taking 

flak from Republicans for declaring 

that deadline, but his political 

strategists surely have calculated 

that more voters will be relieved 

than concerned. 

Seen in that light, war with 

Iran is the last thing Obama 

would want this year. 

But there is a complication: 

Israel and its powerful American 

lobby. Israel’s political leaders, 

though apparently not its military 

and intelligence chiefs, want 

to bomb Iran, not because they 

fear an attack should it acquire a 

nuke — which would be suicidal 

for Iran, since Israel has hundreds 

of nuclear weapons — but rather 

because Iran, now close to Iraq 

thanks to the U.S. regime change 

there, could inhibit Israel’s ability 

to have its way with its neighbors 

and the long-suffering, occupied 

Palestinians, especially in the 

blockaded Gaza Strip. 

Obama’s political problem 

is that it would be ill-advised, 

particularly in an election year, 

for an American president to be 

at odds with the Israeli government 

and its lobby here, which 

jump to a conclusion along the 

lines of “okay, so, US President 

Barack Obama has gone completely 

off the deep end. Fruit 

loop. Nutter. To the booby hatch 

with him.” 

The difficulty in avoiding such 

a conclusion should be obvious: 

Open war between the US and 

Iran is a crazy idea, and not just 

mildly so. It goes well beyond 

“dumb as a box of rocks” and 

easily pings the “murderously 

insane” range. Not only is it crazy 

at the level of military strategy, 

it’s completely disconnected from 

reality in terms of putative casus 

belli: Every even semi-objective 

assessment of Iran’s nuclear program 

indicts the claim that Iran’s 

government is either close to 

producing a nuclear weapon or 

especially interested in doing so. 

In order to explain Obama’s 

indisputably insane actions without 

concluding personal insanity 

on his part — that is to say, in 

order explain a sane man’s insane 

position — we have to place him 

in the iron grip of an institutional 

is pushing Congress to adopt the 

harshest measures against Iran’s 

economy. 

Thus Obama can’t openly tell 

the Israelis not to strike Iran, 

though his subordinates are 

doing this behind the scenes. 

Reporter Gareth Porter has disclosed 

that 

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of 

Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey told 

Israeli leaders Jan. 20 that the 

United States would not participate 

in a war against Iran begun 

by Israel without prior agreement 

from Washington. … 

But the Israeli government 

remains defiant about maintaining 

its freedom of action to make 

war on Iran, and it is counting 

on the influence of right-wing 

extremist views in U.S. politics 

to bring pressure to bear on 

Obama to fall into line with a 

possible Israeli attack during the 

election campaign this fall. 

The big questions are (1) Does 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin 

Netanyahu think this warning 

is a bluff? and (2) What would 

Obama do if the prime minister 

calls it? In other words, if 

Israel strikes Iran in April or 

May and Iran retaliates against 

Israel, would Obama stick to his 

word and stay out? Or would he 

try avoid the Israel lobby’s and 

Republicans’ inevitable charges 

insanity reaching back more than 

half a century. 

And hey … that’s something we 

can do. 

Since World War Two, that 

segment of America’s political 

class which we’ve since come to 

know (thanks to Eisenhower) as 

“the military-industrial complex” 

has been in the driver’s seat. The 

military exigencies of that war 

put it there; the post-war national 

security state was created to keep 

it there. 

The primary activity of the US 

government since 1941 — first 

due to those military exigencies, 

and later as a matter of policy — 

has been to ongoingly transfer as 

much wealth as possible from the 

pockets of America’s productive 

class to the “defense” establishment. 

And it’s a big business. The 

direct transfers, not counting the 

stuff hidden in line items other 

than “defense,” are the US government’s 

single biggest budget 

item, coming to about 25% of 

federal spending. Big business 

 

 

 

of “appeasement” by intervening? 

It would take courage hitherto 

uncharacteristic of this president 

to withstand that pressure and 

stay out. 

An important consideration in 

all this is the widely held assessment 

that Israel alone couldn’t do 

enough damage to Iran’s nuclear 

facilities, major parts of which 

are deep underground. As the 

Washington Post’s David Ignatius 

reports, “The Israelis are said 

to recognize that damage to the 

nuclear program might be modest, 

requiring another strike in a 

few years.” 

So while Israel insists on its 

freedom of action, it realizes it 

would need America’s help. This 

means that the Obama administration 

holds the upper hand: it 

is in a position to stop Israel from 

igniting a catastrophic war in the 

Middle East simply by declaring 

publicly that it will not back 

Netanyahu if he orders an attack 

— or covertly provokes Iran into 

firing the first shot. 

Americans who oppose war 

with Iran can best serve peace 

by demanding that Obama make 

such a declaration.

easy order to serve up: Korea, 

Vietnam, Grenada and so forth, 

with “Cold War” filling the gaps. 

But since 1990, the “defense” 

establishment and its political 

shills have had to drum up new 

bogeymen on an ad hoc basis to 

keep the government contracts 

coming in for new guns, new 

bombs, new aircraft, new bases 

to build and newly destroyed cities 

to re-build. 

Their approach comes down to 

a prescription attributed to neoconservative 

“foreign policy specialist” 

Michael Ledeen: “Every 

ten years or so, the United States 

needs to pick up some small 

crappy little country and throw it 

against the wall, just to show the 

world we mean business.”

Therapist” does not need 

a refresher course. You are 

mistaken when you say 

that the “vast majority” of 

older women lose interest 

in sex. 

The Harvard Women’s 

Health Watch newsletter 

reported that in a survey 

of 27,000 women enrolled 

in the Women’s Health 

Initiative (WHI), more 

than 60 percent of women 

in their 50s, 45 percent 

of those in their 60s and 

28 percent of women in 

their 70s reported that 

they were sexually active, 

and almost two-thirds 

said they were happy with 

their level of sexual activity. 

Of those who were 

dissatisfied, more than 

half said they would prefer 

having sex more often. 

Even these numbers may 

be misleading, because 

when healthy women stop 

having sex, it is not necessarily 

due to a lack of libido. 

Often it’s because they 

lack a partner or because 

topical treatments have 

not resolved the common 

problem of vaginal dryness, 

which can cause 

pain during intercourse.

not take issue with the 

fact that post-menopausal

in sex. In fact, we 

encourage it. We do, however, 

disagree with “Sex 

Therapist’s” comment that 

losing interest is a myth. 

We are delighted the 

study showed that 28 

percent of women still 

have an active libido into 

their 70s (and presumably 

beyond). But it is hardly 

a myth that hormones are 

depleted as we age, and 

many post-menopausal 

women lose interest for 

a variety of reasons. 

According to our readers, 

those who have a healthy 

sex life are generally using 

some form of hormone 

replacement. We need to 

acknowledge this reality 

and not make women feel 

freakish or inadequate if 

they experience a drop in 

libido and hormones are 

not an option.

Beef and Broccoli 

1 ½ lbs beef roast, sliced into thin 

strips 

1 cup beef broth 

1/2 cup soy sauce 

1/3 cup brown sugar 

2 Tbsp sesame oil 

3 garlic cloves, minced 

2 Tbsp cornstarch 

2 Tbsp water 

Fresh broccoli florets (as many as 

desired) 

Place beef in slow cooker. Mix the 

soy sauce, brown sugar, oil, and garlic 

together. Pour over beef. Cover 

and cook on high for 3 hours or on 

low for 6 hours. Stir cornstarch and 

water in a cup until smooth. Add to 

slow cooker. Stir well to combine. 

Add blanched broccoli. Stir to combine. 

Cover and cook for 20 minutes 

longer on high or until thickened. 

Serve over rice. Serves 6

Pear Salad 

1/3 cup ketchup 

½ cup white vinegar 

¾ cup sugar 

2 tsp salt 

1 cup canola oil 

2 heads romaine lettuce, chopped 

4 ounces blue cheese, crumbled

chopped 

½ cup toasted chopped walnuts 

½ red onion, chopped 

In a small bowl combine first four 

ingredients. Gradually pour in oil, 

stirring constantly until well blended. 

In a large bowl combine remaining 

ingredients. Pour dressing over all ad 

toss to coat well. Serves 6. 

Kool Aid Pie 

¼ cup warm water 

1 small pkg Kool Aid (your choice 

of flavor) 

1 can condensed milk 

1 8-oz carton whipped topping 

2 8-inch graham cracker crusts 

Dissolve Kool Aid in warm water. 

Stir in milk and whipped topping 

stirring until thoroughly combined. 

Pour into graham cracker crusts and 

chill at least four hours.

Supermarket tricks that increase cost 

I’ve always thought of myself 

as pretty sharp when it comes to 

spotting supermarket trickery. 

I’m not even fazed by an end-cap 

display announcing, “Special.” 

I know their ways. They 

hope we’ll just assume that 

“special” means “super 

cheap sale.” But we’re so 

much smarter than that. 

Which is why I was taken 

aback by a recent article 

by our friends over at 

TLC Discovery Channel. 

They revealed ways grocery 

stores trick us into 

spending more that I’d not 

considered. Some of these 

really made me stop and think. 

1. TVs at checkout lines. I 

have not seen this yet, but I 

hear it’s coming. The trick is 

to distract us from the checkout 

scanner while exposing us 

to product ads for items that 

are coincidentally within easy 

reach, or that we’ll encounter on 

our next shopping trip.

2. Rearranging the store. 

There’s a reason they do this: To 

get you out of your rut so you’ll 

start to notice things you never 

saw before. While searching for 

what you need, you’re apt 

to toss a few new things 

into your cart that you 

hadn’t planned. The store 

wins again. 

3. Strategic placement. 

There’s a psychology in 

the way stores are laid 

out. Milk, bread and eggs 

(common items) are located 

miles from one another. 

They know you’ll have to 

traverse the store from one 

end to the other. That increases 

the likelihood you’ll buy more 

things than you planned. Tricky! 

4. Pricey things at eye level. 

Human nature says, apparently, 

that humans are more likely 

to pick up things at eye level 

than when placed higher or 

lower. So where do they put the 

most expensive options? Bingo!

premium to have their items 

placed at eye level. 

5. Unit pricing. It’s a good 

thing that stores now have 

labels showing the per-ounce 

or per-pint price, right? Sure, 

as long as all of the options 

are broken down in the same 

way. But what happens when ice 

cream is shown as per ounce for 

one brand, per gram for another 

and per pint for that one over 

there? Not easy to compare. The 

trick is to confuse us so we’ll 

just grab the one at eye level. 

6. Diluting liquids. Items like 

liquid laundry detergent, cleaners 

and fruit juices can be difficult 

to price compare. While one 

brand may be priced cheaper 

than its name-brand competitor, 

it may be watered down considerably 

and therefore cheaper. 

Become a label reader to avoid 

getting tricked. 

7. Grouping complementary 

items. You have tortilla chips on 

your list, but not fresh gourmet 

salsa, sour cream and grated 

premium cheese. But hey, they 

just happened to be arranged so 

beautifully right there with the 

chips, so why not? Or you grab 

the sale-priced eggs, but then 

see the hash browns, milk and 

premium brand English muffins 

right in the same bin. How 

thoughtful. The only problem: 

All those accessories are fullpriced. 

Yet another tricky way 

the store gets you to spend 

more.

the field 

Deciding on a topic for my first 

sports column turned out to be easier 

than expected. What better way to 

start a sports column than to explain 

why I believe sports are important? So 

here goes… Sports do 

not simply entertain. 

They teach. Lessons 

learned through 

playing sports go 

well beyond those 

of shooting, passing, 

pitching, hitting, tack-

We are taught to show sportsmanship 

by congratulating opponents 

after a game and being respectful of 

that same opponent during the game. 

Rules are set in any athletic event and 

any violation of said rules results in 

a foul or penalty. As with life, when 

rules are not followed, there are repercussions. 

As athletes, we are taught to strive 

for success on the court/field, set 

goals and work to achieve those goals. 

Perseverance is imperative. An athlete 

who truly wants to better himself will 

be on the field after the rest of the 

team leaves practice, working on their 

game, dedicated to doing whatever he 

can to improve. 

There is no I in team. With any 

team sport one must learn to work 

well with others. Being a part of any 

team means relying on other players, 

trusting and sharing. In basketball, 

point guards know to look for the 

open man and get that player the ball. 

It’s called an assist for a reason. There 

is no room for selfishness in team 

sports. 

Sports can build character and 

teach confidence. If you practice free 

throws long enough, you can step 

to the line at any time and feel good 

about your chances of making them. 

Character is built during all those 

hours of working on the shot, pushing 

yourself to be better. 

Athletes are taught to show class 

in victory and in defeat and to pride 

themselves not only on ability, but 

also on humility. Taunting, excessive 

celebrating, arguing with a referee or 

opponent will earn a player nothing 

more than a penalty that not only 

hurts themselves, but also the team, 

and in the Grady home, had myself or 

one of my brothers committed such a 

violation of the rules, we’d surely have 

earned ourselves a serious scolding 

and an appropriate punishment. 

An athlete may fall, physically or 

mentally. It could be getting knocked

down during a game or having a poor 

performance. The important lesson 

that comes with falling is to get back 

up, not to sulk or give up. 

To quote one of my favorite movies, 

A League of their Own, “There’s no 

crying in baseball!” Well, sometimes 

there is. Coming off the field after losing 

a championship or rivalry game, 

especially when you feel you should 

have done more. Or how about when 

you win that game, and pride for the 

school and family you represent overwhelms 

you? I’d say that may warrant 

a few tears. 

Pride comes with being a part of a 

team, logging the hours to contribute 

to the team, and being a part of that 

team’s success. An athlete should be 

proud of himself, but never boastful, 

always humble. If you’re good, you 

don’t need to tell people you’re good. 

These are things that athletes are 

taught. A good coach instills these 

things into their players. Not all good 

players always remember these things, 

as is life…the tools are there nevertheless. 

Tools for success on the field, 

and tools for success in life are one in 

the same. Sports absolutely teach life 

lessons. Use the tools, follow the rules, 

and enjoy “the game.”

game, getting ankles taped, loosening 

limbs, praying the Lord’s Prayer, preparing 

to play the game. 

Stepping into the batter’s box with 

nothing but a need to hit 

The crack of the bat connecting on 

a good pitch, the feeling of catching 

that pitch on the sweet spot of the 

bat and seeing it shoot like a rocket 

into center field. 

What could be better? 

Standing on the pitcher’s mound, 

running dirt through palms clammy 

from excitement while your teammates 

rally behind you, 

The smell of a leather glove. 

The pop of the catcher’s mitt after 

you’ve thrown a perfect pitch and 

hear the umpire cry out, “Strike!” 

Watching the opposition approach 

the plate and knowing she can’t touch 

you…It’s war between the two of you. 

The intensity, the desire, the passion 

for the game, 

Could there be anything better? 

The pride that overcomes you after 

a well-earned victory, 

Celebrating with these girls who 

through camaraderie have become
