It was a party on Friday, February 1 for all the staff and students of CFLTC who came 

out to celebrate in the former Korea Dome parking lot and Music Cadre. Some students 

arrived in festive attire to show their support of this fun event. The event began 

with an address from school Commandant, LCol Thomson, who spoke from a historic podium 

used in the earlier days of the school, wishing the participants a day of fun through 

activity.

C'était la fête ce vendredi 1er février pour le personnel et les stagiaires du CILFC, 

qui sont venus célébrer dans le stationnement de l'ancien Korea Dome et dans le 

bâtiment du Cadre d'instruction en musique. Certains stagiaires portaient des 

vêtements d'allure festive en l'honneur de cet événement amusant. Le tout a débuté par un 

discours du commandant de l'École, le Lcol Thomson, qui s'exprimait du haut d'un podium 

datant des premiers moments de l'établissement, et qui souhaitait du plaisir aux participants 

tout au long de la journée.

Annual ‘AgKnowledge’ 

Forum to address issues of 

concern to local farmers 

Alliston, ON - The Christian Farmers Federation of 

Ontario (CFFO), The Simcoe County Federation of 

Agriculture (SCFA) and the Holland Marsh Growers 

Association in partnership with Nottawasaga Futures are

hosting the annual AgKnowledge Forum on Thursday,

Pancake Dinner 

Zion Presbyterian Church, in Angus, will be having a 

Pancake Dinner on February 12, 2013, between 

5:00-7:00 p.m. Dinner will include pancakes, sausages, 

beverages and ice cream sundaes. Adults $8; children 

between 6 to 12 years $4; children 5 and under no charge. 

Pine River 

Restoration Project 

Volunteers Needed! 

Volunteers are needed to help create a canoe route in 

the Pine River in Angus to enhance fish habitat, improve 

stream health and to stop erosion. 

More specifically, volunteers and input are being 

sought out for participation in the Township of Essa’s 

Healthy Community Committee’s Pine River Restoration 

Project. Groups will be working together in teams in an 

effort to reposition natural fallen trees and logs in the Pine 

River, plant trees, anchor large, cut trees along erosive 

banks and remove garbage – all in an active approach to 

making our community healthier, together. 

Please consider taking part and contacting a Staff member 

at the Township of Essa, NVCA or the South Simcoe 

Streams Network to become involved with fellow concerned 

citizens throughout 2013, with 3 planned work 

days taking place in June, July and September. Tasks can 

be adapted to suit any skill level and varying physical abilities. 

This project will be implemented with support 

provided by the Government of Ontario.

“This is a celebration of us,” commented 

LCol Thomson. “this is a celebration 

of the Logistics branch and 45 

years as we now appear, though, of 

course, we have existed longer than 

that. What we are trying to do is reestablish 

and re-invigorate some esprit 

de corps in the branch. We were able to 

get everyone out here today. We are 

running some games of strength and 

brawn and brain, we’ll see how everyone 

makes out today.” 

There were two outdoor activities 

offered Friday morning with a lineup 

of people waiting to participate. 

Different trades engaged in some 

friendly competition to the cheers and 

cat-calls of their peers. The first was a 

tug-of-war, which ended with a few 

spills due to slippery, snowy footing. 

The second outdoor activity, which 

was intended to be human curling, due 

to weather conditions became a relay 

race with one partner pulling another 

on an inner tube. This was much enjoyed by the participants. “It’s a lot of fun, a day to have 

fun and be outside and enjoy the nice weather,” commented Mcpl Julie Lehoux. “I am on 

the QL6 course, RMS Clerks. It’s our first week and it’s going really well.

Le souk à la corde faisait partie des activités extérieures... Oups! Attention où vous mettez 

les pieds! 

« Il s'agit d'une célébration en notre honneur », a souligné le Lcol Thomson. « Une 

célébration de la Branche de la logistique et des 45 années qui nous ont menés vers ce que 

nous sommes aujourd'hui, bien que les services de la logistique aient existé avant cela, 

évidemment. En ce moment, nous essayons de rétablir et de revigorer l'esprit de corps de la 

Branche. Nous avons été en mesure de vous réunir tous ici aujourd’hui. Des jeux de force 

et d'esprit vous attendent et nous avons hâte de voir comment vous allez vous en tirer. » 

Le vendredi matin, deux activités étaient prévues à l'extérieur et les participants formaient 

une file pour y prendre part. Des membres des différents groupes professionnels ont 

participé aux jeux dans un contexte amical, aux sons des encouragements et des huées de 

leurs pairs, selon le cas. La première activité consistait au souk à la corde, qui s'est terminé 

avec la chute de quelques-uns en raison du sol glissant et enneigé. La seconde activité, qui 

devait être du curling humain, a pris la forme d'une course à relai en raison des conditions 

météorologiques. Les joueurs devaient tirer leur partenaire sur une chambre à air. Les participants 

ont beaucoup aimé ces activités. « Nous avons beaucoup de plaisir. C'est une 

journée pour s'amuser et profiter du beau temps », a affirmé le Cplc Julie Lehoux. « Je fais 

partie du cours de NQ6 pour les commis SGR. C'est notre première semaine et ça va vraiment 

bien. Nous formons un bon groupe. » 

Pour se réchauffer, les joyeux convives ont traversé la rue pour continuer la fête dans le 

bâtiment du Cadre d'instruction en musique, où un jeu de mini-golf créatif avait lieu le long 

des balcons à l’étage. Les trous avaient été assignés aux différents groupes professionnels 

du CILFC, qui devaient ensuite créer le parcours en utilisant leurs propres outils de travail, 

littéralement. Entre autres, certains trous ont été fabriqués à l'aide de douilles de munition, 

d'outils de cuisine, de fourniture de bureau et d'instruments de musique. Les joueurs 

devaient frapper la balle au moyen de baguettes, d'énormes crayons et d'autres bâtons surprenants, 

ce qui a fait rire et sourire les participants. « Je m’amuse bien. Il y a beaucoup de 

monde ici et c'est vraiment excitant de voir autant de membres de la logistique participer à 

l'anniversaire de la Branche », s'est exprimé le Ltv Ian Cross. « J'aime bien le mini-golf. Les 

différentes équipes ont fait beaucoup d'efforts pour rendre le parcours intéressant. Ils ont 

faire preuve d'une grande créativité, surtout le Cadre des munitions et celui du SGR. Ça 

rend le tout amusant. » En outre, dans le bâtiment destiné à la musique avait lieu un jeuquestionnaire 

basé sur la logistique. Des prix ont été remis à de nombreux participants à 

l'évènement.

To warm up, birthday revelers were able to 

cross the road into the Music Cadre where a 

creative game of mini golf was set up along 

the upper balconies of the building. Each hole 

was assigned to a different trade within 

CFLTC who then created the course using 

nothing but the tools of their trade…literally. 

There were holes made with ammo casings, 

kitchen tools, office supplies and musical 

instruments among others. Mini golfers had 

to putt with drumsticks, oversized pencils, 

and other weird putters causing laughter and 

smiles amongst all participants. “I am having 

a great time. There’s a lot of people out here 

and its really exciting to see so many people 

from the Logistics community out here taking 

part in the Logistics birthday,” commented 

Lt(N) Ian Cross. “I am enjoying the mini golf, 

there was quite a bit of effort put in here from 

the different teams making the course really 

interesting. It’s a lot of creativity, especially 

from the Ammo cadre and the RMS cadre. It 

makes this fun.” 

Also in the Music Building was a trivia 

contest based on Logistics. Prizes were handed 

out to many of the participants of the day’s event. 

Later in the day a beautiful cake was cut and all the revelers ended the day with smiles 

and full bellies.

OP UNIFORMED LUNCH 

Throughout the months of February and March, volunteers around CFB 

Borden will be raising money for Op UNIFORMED LUNCH. Together with 

partners throughout the City of Barrie, we will be using the funds raised to host 

lunches for patrons of the David Busby Street Centre this April. 

“David Busby Street Centre is a community not-for-profit organization working 

from a non judgmental approach to advocate for and improve conditions for 

individuals and families within the County of Simcoe who are homeless or at 

risk of homelessness.” (www.busbycentre.ca) 

Our goal is to raise $1800, so Op UNIFORMED LUNCH can distribute 

lunches to approximately 200 men, women and children who call the David 

Busby Street Centre home. 

How can you help? It’s easy! 

• CFB Borden volunteers will be doing a boot drive in February, so when you 

see us plese give. 

• We will also be selling pizza lunches throughout the base at participating 

Units on Fridays during the month of March.

Pendant les mois de février et mars, des bénévoles de la BFC Borden recueilleront des fonds 

pour une nouvelle initiative à Borden, l’OPÉRATION : DÉJEUNER EN UNIFORME. En collaboration 

avec des partenaires de la ville de Barrie, nous organiserons des activités de financement 

à l’heure du déjeuner, au profit des clients du David Busby Street Centre. 

« Le David Busby Street Centre est une organisation communautaire sans but lucratif qui 

œuvre, sans porter de jugement, à défendre les intérêts et à améliorer les conditions de vie des personnes 

et des familles du comté de Simcoe qui sont sans abri ou à risque de le devenir. » 

Aider les autres à prendre soin d’eux-mêmes . L’opération Uniformed Lunch vise à recueillir 

1 800 $, afin de pouvoir offrir un dîner à environ 200 hommes, femmes et enfants, qui considèrent 

le David Busby Street Centre comme étant leur foyer. 

Vous souhaitez contribuez? C’est facile : 

• Les bénévoles de la BFC Borden effectueront une collecte de fonds en février. Soyez généreux 

quand ils passeront. 

• Chaque vendredi du mois de mars, ils vendront aussi de la pizza à l'heure du dîner dans les 

unités participantes de la base.

Geocaching is a form of high tech treasure hunting 

that has attracted over 5 million people worldwide. 

There are almost 2 million active caches all 

over the world including Greenland and Antarctica, with 20- 

30 right outside the base in Angus. 

“It’s a way to get back out into nature and get out and do 

something for people that are usually stuck around their 

computer, and still do high tech stuff,” says Sgt William 

Vyse, an avid geocacher here at Borden. Vyse is still fairly 

new at geocaching. His fiancé got him started about 2 years 

ago using his car GPS. Since then he has graduated up to a 

hand held GPS and has found 160 caches. 

Geocachers use www.geocaching.com as a home-base, 

posting co-ordinates where they have hidden something, 

and logging when they have found something. The website 

has a map of the world with all the locations on it. You simply 

go to the site, look in the area you want to search and 

then put the co-ordinates in your GPS or smart phone GPS 

app. 

There are 6 different sizes of caches from micro (the size 

of a pencil eraser) to big which are rated by difficulty of the 

search. Some caches contain little cards, pins, dinky cars or 

even Tim Cards, mostly small things that inspire young geocachers 

to participate. However, the rule is that if you take 

something from a cache, you leave something of equal or 

greater value behind for the next treasure hunters. Not all 

caches have something to take away however; many caches 

contain a log where you write your geocaching.com username 

and then return to the site to log your find. If you are 

lucky, you might find a “geo-coin” or “travelbug” which are

La géocache est une forme de chasse au trésor pratiquée par plus de cinq millions 

de personnes à l’échelle planétaire. Il y a environ deux millions de caches actives 

aux quatre coins du monde, notamment au Groenland et en Antarctique. Il y en a 

de 20 à 30 à l’extérieur de la base, à Angus. 

« Pour les gens qui sont habituellement constamment à l’ordinateur, c’est un bon moyen 

de sortir en nature et de faire quelque chose, tout en continuant à utiliser la technologie de 

pointe », souligne le sergent William Vyse, de Borden, un adepte de la géocache. Le Sgt 

Vyse est encore nouveau dans le monde de la géocache. C’est sa fiancée qui lui a fait découvrir 

cette activité, il y a deux ans, à l’aide du GPS de son auto. Il est depuis passé au GPS 

portatif et il a trouvé 160 caches. 

Les géocacheurs utilisent le site www.geocaching.com comme portail, afin d’inscrire les 

coordonnées où ils ont caché quelque chose ainsi que pour enregistrer leurs trouvailles. Le 

site Web comprend une carte du monde où l’on peut voir l’emplacement de toutes les 

caches. Il suffit de se rendre au site, de chercher dans la région où vous souhaitez faire des 

recherches et d’entrer les coordonnées dans votre GPS ou l’application GPS de votre téléphone 

intelligent. 

Il existe six différentes tailles de caches, classées selon la difficulté de la recherche, 

allant de micro (de la taille d’une gomme à effacer sur le bout d’un crayon) à grande. 

Certaines caches comprennent de petites cartes, des épinglettes, des petites autos ou même 

des cartes de Tim Hortons. Il s’agit surtout de petits objets qui inspirent les jeunes à participer. 

Par contre, conformément aux règles, lorsqu’on retire quelque chose d’une cache, 

on doit laisser un autre objet de valeur égale ou supérieure pour les prochaines personnes. 

Cela dit, toutes les caches ne contiennent pas un objet; nombreuses sont celles qui contiennent 

un registre où l’on inscrit son nom d’utilisateur du site geocaching.com pour confirmer 

sa trouvaille. Si vous êtes chanceux, vous pourriez trouver une « géopièce » ou un « 

objet voyageur » qui peuvent être suivis à l’aide du site Web. Ils contiennent un numéro de 

suivi unique qui peut être utilisé pour suivre sa progression en ligne d’une cache à une autre. 

Lorsque vous trouvez un de ces objets, vous avez le choix de le laisser ou de l’emporter et 

de le laisser dans une cache que vous visiterez à une date ultérieure. N’oubliez pas qu’il faut 

enregistrer vos trouvailles sur le site « geocaching.com ». « J’ai trois objets voyageurs qui 

se promènent, souligne le Sgt Vyse. L’un d’entre eux a commencé son trajet en Nouvelle 

Écosse et il est maintenant en Californie. » 

Si on souhaite poser une nouvelle cache, on doit obtenir la lecture GPS de l’emplacement 

et demander à un autre géocacheur d’en vérifier l’exactitude. Si les coordonnées sont 

bonnes, elles peuvent être publiées sur le site Web. Lorsque vous avez placé une cache, vous 

êtes tenu de l’entretenir. Les caches peuvent être dans des contenants de pellicule de 35 mm,

inscribed with a unique code that can be used to log its 

movements from one cache to another. When you find one, 

you can choose to leave it, or you can take it and leave it in 

another cache that you visit at a later date. Again, all of this 

should be logged on geocaching.com. “I have 3 travelbugs 

out and moving around,” commented Vyse, “One I started in 

Nova Scotia and it is now in California.” 

If a geocacher decides to start a new cache, they get a 

GPS reading of the cache site, have it tested for accuracy by 

another geocacher and then it can be published on the website. 

Once you place a cache, you are responsible for maintaining 

it. Caches can be hidden inside anything from a 

35mm film canister or Tupperware box camouflaged with 

green tape, to the popular military style ammo canister. 

They can be cleverly hidden in plain sight in a city, or 

tucked away at the base of a tree in the wilderness. Caches 

can be made into a series with a clues creating a puzzle that 

leads you to the final cache, or they can ask you to simply 

take a photo of the location. There are many different 

options. 

“On New Year’s eve we actually went and found a cache 

at midnight here in Angus,” stated Vyse, “it was a new one. 

I dropped off a geo-coin that had come from the UK with a 

picture of the red phone booths in London. It has been traveling 

around since 2009.” Due to the popularity of geocaching, 

many travel destinations now advertise the geocaches 

in proximity to draw in potential tourists who help 

the coins and bugs along their journeys.

interested in meeting others who share your passion for an 

exchange of ideas, techniques or nifty stories, please feel

Uni qui se promène depuis 2009, avec une photo des célèbres cabines téléphoniques rouges 

de Londres. » 

En raison de la popularité de cette activité, bon nombre de destinations touristiques 

annoncent maintenant des géocaches qui se trouvent à proximité afin d’attirer des touristes 

potentiels. Ces derniers aident alors les géopièces et les objets voyageurs à poursuivre leur 

parcours.

COPE Service Dogs visit Base Borden Fire Department 

On the evening of 22 January 2013, the Base Borden Fire Department was host to 

a night of training involving the newest puppies from COPE Service Dogs, an 

organization that provides service dogs to people with disabilities. 

The aim of this evening was to expose the puppies to the firefighters and their equipment 

as part of their socialization phase of training. The puppies were introduced to the firefighters 

in their day-to-day uniforms and their personal gear after which the firefighters were 

asked to dress in their bunker gear and breathing apparatus. As each piece of gear was put 

on, the puppies were allowed to approach the firefighters and receive a treat from them. 

This method of training continued until eventually the firefighters were dressed in all of 

their gear and the puppies could now see how a firefighter would appear in the event of an 

emergency. The training session ended with the Fire Department bringing out one of their 

fire trucks and allowing the puppies to become familiar with the lights and siren. This type 

of exposure is intended to alleviate any fears that would arise in the event that the COPE 

dog and its life-partner were in an emergency situation requiring the intervention of the Fire 

department. 

One of the COPE puppies is no stranger to the Base Borden Firefighters. Bobby has 

been spending many of his days at the Fire hall with his puppy raiser Heather Bruyere, 

Admin Assist to the Fire Chief. 

This evening was made possible with the cooperation of the entire Base Borden Fire 

Department, and in particular, the Base Fire Chief, Skip Reid. A special thank you goes out 

to Firefighters Dave Bly and Don Manser as they patiently withstood the onslaught from 

the many highly inquisitive COPE puppies.

On Friday the 25th of January, RVH held the 26th annual 

MASH BASH at Snow Valley Ski Resort. As always, CFHSTC 

Staff and Students showed our support to the local hospital by 

setting up modular tents and medical equipment. This years 

MASH BASH raised $16,000 in support of RVH. Right, is a 

picture of the members from CFHSTC who helped set-up and 

make the day a fun-filled event for everyone.

Le 22 janvier 2013 en soirée, le service d’incendie de la BFC Borden a organisé une soirée d’entraînement 

avec les nouveaux chiots de race de l’organisme COPE chiens de service, qui fournit 

des chiens d’assistance aux personnes handicapées. 

L’objectif de la soirée était de permettre aux chiots de se familiariser avec les pompiers et leur 

équipement, dans le cadre de l’étape de la socialisation de leur dressage. Les chiots ont été présentés aux 

pompiers en uniforme de tous les jours avec leurs articles personnels. Puis, les dresseurs ont demandé 

aux pompiers de revêtir leur tenue de feu et leur respirateur. À mesure que les pompiers revêtaient une 

partie de leur équipement, ils laissaient approcher les chiots et leur donnaient une gâterie. Ce type d’entraînement 

s’est poursuivi jusqu’à ce que les pompiers soient en tenue de feu complète, afin que les chiots 

puissent voir de quoi aurait l’air un pompier en situation d’urgence. La séance d’entraînement s’est terminée 

par la sortie d’un des camions de pompiers afin de permettre aux chiots de se familiariser avec les 

phares et les sirènes. Ce type d’exposition est conçu pour alléger les craintes si jamais un chien du programme 

COPE et son partenaire de la vie se retrouvent dans une situation d’urgence qui exige l’intervention 

du service des incendies. 

L’un des chiots du programme COPE connaît déjà bien les pompiers de la BFC Borden. Bobby a 

passé beaucoup de temps à la caserne avec son éleveuse, Heather Bruyere, l’adjointe administrative du 

chef du service d’incendie. 

La soirée a été rendue possible grâce à la collaboration de tout le service d’incendie de Borden, et en 

particulier le chef du service de la base, Skip Reid. Des remerciements tout particuliers aux pompiers 

Dave Bly et Don Manser, qui ont patiemment enduré le troupeau de chiots archi-curieux du programme 

COPE.

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee awarded 

Sharron Beaton was nominated 

as a recipient of the 

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee 

Medal as a result of her 

dedication and involvement 

in supporting international 

students. Sharron was a 

dedicated volunteer who 

assisted countless 

international students with 

acclimatizing to Canadian 

culture, and in this process 

she assisted them with a 

variety of needs, from cold 

weather wear to religious 

needs to social activities 

such as opening her own 

kitchen and home for 

preparation in support of 

the formerly held 

international TGITs. 

Sharron retired from the 

RCAF, and was a food 

service officer, a registered 

dietician holding a Masters 

Degree in Food and 

Nutrition.

Bilingual meetings 

In keeping with the spirit of the official languages program, federal institutions support 

the creation of an environment conducive to the use of English and French, 

where appropriate. 

Meetings are excellent opportunities to foster a bilingual environment. Bilingual meetings 

can take a little longer, but there are no short cuts to making everyone feel truly welcome. 

We know from experience that when a meeting is held in both official languages, we are 

more willing to participate, speak with greater ease and feel respected because our first official 

language is being used. 

Here are ten tried and true tips for chairing bilingual meetings: 

1. Send a bilingual invitation. 

2. Convey all material simultaneously (before, during, after) in English and French. 

3. Remember that the presence of some unilingual participants does not prevent a 

bilingual meeting. 

4. Use a bilingual co-chair if you cannot chair in your second language. 

5. Open with a bilingual greeting. 

6. Announce right away that everyone can use the language of their choice. 

7. Provide on-going summaries if needed and alternate between English and French 

throughout the meeting. 

8. Invite participants to ask for clarification when needed. 

9. Treat all ideas equally, whether voiced in English or in French. 

10. Ask for feedback on how the bilingual meeting went. 

We all win when we work together in our official language of choice!

It costs less to save energy,

Alarge percentage of our population tends to think of global warming as a phenomenon 

that will take place progressively over long periods of time, therefore 

allowing us to adapt to extreme changes in our planet’s weather patterns. It 

is interesting to note that in the past three decades, the Arctic ice has contracted 

by roughly 30%. Due to the increasing climate change impact, many 

exclusive Arctic habitats have begun to disappear. For example, we 

can already see tundra ecosystems being replaced by species 

that are typically situated in more southern locations, such as 

evergreen shrubs. Some recent studies have confirmed that 

surface temperatures over most of the Arctic, have 

jumped 5 to 10 degrees C above normal in recent years. 

One of the main reasons for this phenomenon is the 

loss of reflective sea ice which causes more solar radiation 

to be absorbed by the dark water, therefore further 

heating surface layers. Many studies have confirmed 

that a large number of Arctic glaciers are currently 

experiencing accelerated melting, which 

many experts believe is the triggering mechanism 

for rising sea levels worldwide. Statistics show that 

in the summer of 2008 for the first time in recorded 

history, both the northwest and northeast passages 

were free of ice. Global warming is no longer a problem 

that requires long term solutions, it is a right here 

and right now situation, that we are all responsible for 

doing what we can to curtail any additional negative 

impacts.

Below are some energy conservation tips that you can immediately take advantage of to 

curtail the Base’s energy consumption and reduce strain on the electrical grid: 

• If you have a vestibule at the main entrance of your building please make sure that both 

sets of doors are closed. This way the air gap that is created by the two sets of 

doors acts as an insulator. 

• On sunny days during the winter, if your office has windows, it is 

good practice to keep the blinds open in order to receive free 

space conditioning. By keeping the blinds open during sunny 

days, your office space will be partially heated by the sun’s 

energy, this in return cuts down on CFB Borden’s utility 

consumption due to free space heating. 

• If applicable, at the end of the day it is recommended 

that CFB Borden personnel close their window 

blinds before going home. This is a very simple 

action that only takes a few seconds and reduces 

significant heat-loss during the night when the 

building is not occupied. 

Below are some home energy conservation tips 

that you can immediately take advantage of to 

conserve energy and keep money in your pockets: 

• On average, water heaters use the most energy in 

the home after heating. A 175-litre tank can use up 

to 5000 kWh per year, a cost of almost $500 at 

today’s prices. 

• Drain a pail of water from your natural gas hot water 

tank every 3 months, or as recommended by the manufacturer 

in order to remove sediment that prevent heat 

transfer which lower the unit’s efficiency. 

• When you are going to be out of town for an extended period 

of time use the vacation setting or turn off your water heater.

Une grande partie de la population a tendance à croire que le réchauffement climatique 

est un phénomène qui s’échelonnera sur une très longue période, ce qui 

nous permettra de nous adapter à des changements extrêmes dans les régimes climatiques 

de notre planète. Fait intéressant, au cours des trois dernières décennies, la glace 

de l’Arctique a diminué d’environ 30 %. En raison de l’incidence grandissante des changements 

climatiques, plusieurs habitats uniques de l’Arctique ont commencé à disparaître. Par 

exemple, on peut déjà voir des espèces typiques de la toundra être remplacées par des 

espèces telles que les arbustes à feuillage persistant, qu’on retrouve normalement plus au 

sud. Des études récentes ont confirmé que les températures de surface dans presque tout 

l’Arctique ont grimpé de 5 à 10 °C au dessus des normales depuis quelques années. Ce 

phénomène est dû principalement à la perte de glace de mer réfléchissante, qui entraîne 

davantage d’absorption du rayonnement solaire par les eaux sombres et, par conséquent, un 

réchauffement accru des couches de surface. Bon nombre d’études ont confirmé qu’un 

grand nombre de glaciers de l’Arctique subissent actuellement une fonte accélérée, ce que 

beaucoup d’experts considèrent comme l’élément déclencheur de la hausse du niveau de la 

mer à l’échelle de la planète. Les statistiques montrent que, à l’été 2008, pour la première 

fois de l’histoire, les passages du Nord Ouest et du Nord-Est ont été libres de glace. Le 

réchauffement climatique n’est plus un problème qui exige des solutions à long terme; il 

s’agit d’une situation avec laquelle il nous faut composer dès maintenant. Nous sommes 

tous tenus de poser les gestes que nous pouvons pour réduire tout effet négatif supplémentaire 

sur l’environnement. 

N’oubliez pas : « IL COÛTE MOINS CHER D’ÉCONOMISER L’ÉNERGIE 

QUE DE L’ACHETER! » 

Voici quelques conseils utiles à mettre en œuvre dès aujourd’hui pour diminuer la consommation 

d’énergie de la base et réduire la pression sur le réseau électrique : 

• S’il y a un vestibule à l’entrée principale de votre bâtiment, assurez-vous de bien fermer 

les portes, car l’air se trouvant entre deux séries de portes sert d’isolant. 

• Lors des jours d’hiver ensoleillés, si votre bureau a des fenêtres, laissez les stores 

ouverts afin de bénéficier de la chaleur du soleil, qui contribuera gratuitement à chauffer 

les locaux. En gardant les stores ouverts pendant les journées ensoleillées, le bureau sera 

partiellement chauffé par les rayons solaires, ce qui permettra de réduire la consommation 

d’électricité à la BFC Borden, et ce, gratuitement. 

• S’il y a lieu, fermez vos stores avant de quitter le bureau durant l’hiver. Il s’agit là d’un 

geste très simple et rapide qui permet de réduire considérablement la perte de chaleur 

durant la nuit, lorsque le bâtiment est inoccupé. 

Voici quelques conseils que vous pouvez mettre en pratique à la maison dès maintenant 

pour économiser énergie et argent : 

• En moyenne, le chauffe eau consomme beaucoup d’énergie; il arrive bon deuxième 

après le chauffage. Un réservoir de 175 litres peut consommer jusqu’à 5 000 kWh par 

année, ce qui représente environ 500 $ aux tarifs d’aujourd’hui. 

• Drainer l’équivalent d’un seau d’eau de votre chauffe eau alimenté au gaz naturel tous 

les trois mois, ou selon les recommandations du fabricant, permet d’éliminer les sédiments 

qui empêchent le transfert de chaleur de s’effectuer correctement et qui réduisent 

l’efficacité de votre appareil. 

• Si vous devez vous absenter pendant une longue période, baissez le thermostat au plus 

bas réglage ou fermez votre chauffe eau.

No battery changes needed in newest smoke alarms 

(NC)— There is now a way to simplify your family's fire protection as some smoke 

alarms ring in 2013 with major improvements. 

The safety product market leader Kidde is introducing entire line of 'worry-free' smoke 

alarms. Featuring new 'sensing technology' and 'sealed lithium batteries', these latest models 

can be installed throughout the home and eliminate common smoke alarm complaints. 

The first issue to be addressed is nuisance alarms. These new products, according to 

Kidde, feature smart-sensing photoelectric technology that minimizes, if not eliminates, 

cooking and shower steam-related false alarms.

DECISIONS IN THE MIST 

After his wife of 50 years died, 

John Park suffered a stroke and 

never entirely recovered. While 

he seemed more alert after his morning gin 

and enjoyed talking about golf, he was 

dejected and indifferent. His associates 

doubted whether he understood the financial 

details of his successful shipping business. 

He was keen on remarrying, proposing to 

his late wife's friend, Lady Greer, who 

declined, and to a cashier at his club, who 

accepted. About a year after his stroke, on 

May 30, 1949, he wed Blodwen Park. He 

died less than 3 weeks later. 

The fight over the estate resulted in two 

trials with contradictory results. Initially, a 

jury decided the will prepared by Mr. Park 

on the day he was married was invalid 

because he was not of sound mind, memory 

and understanding. 

Losing the first case, the family tried to 

invoke a will Mr. Park made earlier that 

was revoked by the marriage. They argued 

the marriage was invalid because Mr. Park 

did not have the mental capacity to wed. 

Although the jury found him incapable of 

making the new will, the judge in the second 

trial decided that he had the mental 

capacity to get married. The earlier will 

was revoked and Mrs. Park was granted 

authority to administer the estate (Park v. 

Park, 1953). 

Do you need more competence to make a 

will than marry? The judge thought so. 

The court of appeal agreed that the marriage 

was valid, but said the conflicting 

decisions resulted from the different evidence 

proven at each trial; there is no 

increased capacity requirement.. 

Ultimately, a new trial would have clearly 

settled the question.
