Acknowledgement
Without the support of many people the thesis would never have been completed. For
me, the thesis represents not only a significant part of my study, but also a milestone in
my life. I would like to mark the occasion by expressing my gratitude first and foremost
to my Heavenly Father for His blessings of the knowledge and strength.
To my family members, my husband Filimone Latu who has encouraged me to press on
for almost five years and my children Timona, Tita, Ati, Mo’unga and Silia Latu who
are my compatriots in the field of study. I also thank the extended family and caring and
loving friends who have helped me in many ways. Mālō ‘auptio for all your support and
understanding during my years of study.
A supervisor is responsible for leading students through the challenges to final
achievement. I am fortunate and greatly blessed to have two excellent supervisors. I
would like to thank Dr. Linitā Manu’atu and Mary Russo for the important role they
made in the development of the thesis. Their invaluable support and encouragement
guided me through the challenges of carrying out the research and writing the thesis. I
appreciate their patience in walking me through the process and their sincerity which
meant never accepting less than my best efforts.
As one of the leading universities in New Zealand, AUT has offered me the opportunity
to pursue my work and study in a supportive academic environment. I appreciate all the
constructive feedback that has been continuously given to me by my postgraduate
colleagues and lecturers during the course of my study.
A special fakamālō (gratitude) to the eleven participants, without whom the thesis
would not exist. Also a condolence is extended to the family of one of the participants
who passed away during the writing of the thesis. Your contribution of sharing the daily
