MUSIC SEMINAR ABROAD
The Department of Music occasionally offers a seminar abroad for students who
desire to broaden their understanding and appreciation of foreign culture while
earning college credit. The curriculum offered is based on the interests of the
students who are chosen to participate.
MUSIC THEATRE
The Music Theatre program produces a fully staged musical each year. As a collaborative
effort between the Departments of Music and Theatre, the musical is a major arts
attraction on the Peninsula and has won numerous awards. All non-repeat performances
are open to the public and may be counted toward MUSC 012 credit.
NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE
The New Music Ensemble is a professional ensemble in residence comprised of CNU
music faculty and students. In conjunction with the Conversations with a Composer
lecture series and the Contemporary Music Forum, this ensemble presents concerts
featuring selected works of student, faculty, and guest composers and masterpieces
from the contemporary music repertoire. The concerts are free and open to the public
and may be counted toward MUSC 012 credit.
OPERA CNU
Opera CNU is a member of the National Opera Association and Opera America.
Founded in 1985, it began as an opportunity for students to learn and perform
scenes from the standard operatic repertoire. It produces each year a fully-staged
production from the standard opera repertoire. Opera Workshop presents material on
performance preparation, stage movement, and audition strategies. All performances
are open to the public and may be counted toward MUSC 012 credit.
STUDENT RECITALS
Student recitals presented by the Department of Music are either junior or senior
recitals (in partial fulfillment of degree requirements) or general recitals usually held
on weekdays. In addition, the Department of Music presents faculty recitals, guest
artist recitals, and scholarship benefit recitals. Many of the applied music instructors
present studio recitals comprised of their own students. Sigma Alpha Iota and Phi
Mu Alpha Sinfonia also present recitals throughout the academic year. All degree
recitals, faculty and guest artist recitals, general student recitals, and fraternity recitals
are free and open to the public.
THE VIANNE WEBB MEMORIAL LECTURES IN MUSICOLOGY
