MUSIC SEMINAR ABROAD<br />

The <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> occasionally <strong>of</strong>fers a seminar abroad for students who<br />

desire to broaden their understanding and appreciation <strong>of</strong> foreign culture while<br />

earning college credit. The curriculum <strong>of</strong>fered is based on the interests <strong>of</strong> the<br />

students who are chosen to participate.<br />

MUSIC THEATRE<br />

The <strong>Music</strong> Theatre program produces a fully staged musical each year. As a collaborative<br />

effort between the <strong>Department</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> and Theatre, the musical is a major arts<br />

attraction on the Peninsula and has won numerous awards. All non-repeat performances<br />

are open to the public and may be counted toward MUSC 012 credit.<br />

NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE<br />

The New <strong>Music</strong> Ensemble is a pr<strong>of</strong>essional ensemble in residence comprised <strong>of</strong> CNU<br />

music faculty and students. In conjunction with the Conversations with a Composer<br />

lecture series and the Contemporary <strong>Music</strong> Forum, this ensemble presents concerts<br />

featuring selected works <strong>of</strong> student, faculty, and guest composers and masterpieces<br />

from the contemporary music repertoire. The concerts are free and open to the public<br />

and may be counted toward MUSC 012 credit.<br />

OPERA CNU<br />

Opera CNU is a member <strong>of</strong> the National Opera Association and Opera America.<br />

Founded in 1985, it began as an opportunity for students to learn and perform<br />

scenes from the standard operatic repertoire. It produces each year a fully-staged<br />

production from the standard opera repertoire. Opera Workshop presents material on<br />

performance preparation, stage movement, and audition strategies. All performances<br />

are open to the public and may be counted toward MUSC 012 credit.<br />

STUDENT RECITALS<br />

Student recitals presented by the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> are either junior or senior<br />

recitals (in partial fulfillment <strong>of</strong> degree requirements) or general recitals usually held<br />

on weekdays. In addition, the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> presents faculty recitals, guest<br />

artist recitals, and scholarship benefit recitals. Many <strong>of</strong> the applied music instructors<br />

present studio recitals comprised <strong>of</strong> their own students. Sigma Alpha Iota and Phi<br />

Mu Alpha Sinfonia also present recitals throughout the academic year. All degree<br />

recitals, faculty and guest artist recitals, general student recitals, and fraternity recitals<br />

are free and open to the public.<br />

THE VIANNE WEBB MEMORIAL LECTURES IN MUSICOLOGY<br />

This prestigious lecture series in musicology was founded in the spring <strong>of</strong> 1996 in<br />

honor <strong>of</strong> the late Vianne Webb, one <strong>of</strong> Hampton Roads’ leading music scholars and
