Sir :-1 beg to submit the following annual report, covering
the inspections of uniformed men of the Police Department held
during the year 1912.
The total number of inspections held during the year was
three, being the spring and fall dress coat inspections and the
overcoat inspection. The regular summer blouse inspection was
not held, owing to the fact that so many of the uniformed men
were detailed on the newspaper and other strikes during the
summer.
The system of inspection now in use has resulted in a marked
improvement in the general appearance of uniformed officers and
men. A comparison with the inspection records of previous years
shows fewer condemnations for clothing each year.
The absentees. as shown at the various inspections, are men
who were unable to be present at inspection, for different reasons.
Those marked "Excused," are men who have been detailed in
plain clothes for the past three years or over or who have been
detailed on special duty at various places. The drivers at the
several stations· were also excused from the regular spring and
fall inspections, as they are not required to wear dress coats.
The attached table shows the final order of merit of uniform
inspection for the year 1912.
