Page 10 New Jersey State Fair/Sussex County Farm & Horse Show New Jersey Sunday Herald, July 31, 2011 Brick oven pizza, fried Kool-Aid among new treats at the fair By STEVEN REILLY sreilly@njherald.com A new visitor hospitality tent will provide a spot for fairgoers to bring their yummy concoctions and sit down at picnic tables to enjoy them. The section is just off the corner of Main Street and Vendor Road on the fairgrounds. (All of the pathways in the fairgrounds have street names), behind Al’s sausage. The 20-foot-by-40-foot hospitality tent will be open into the Carnival Area. and Vendor Road. And there is plenty of food to choose from to bring to your table or enjoy while strolling the midway or watching a show. The fried-food fad has a new entry on the midway with the addition of Shelby’s Fried Kool-Aid dessert. The sweet, crunchy treat is just one of the new delicacies at this year’s extravaganza. Shelby’s will also have red-velvet funnel cakes and cinnamon buns on its menu for avid munchers. According to Joyce Buerkle, the director of concessions for the fair, a number of new stands will grace the midway with tasty treats. Dutch Valley Confections will be frying up frozen peanut butter balls to go along with succulent fried mac-and-cheese bites. And everything tastes better on a waffle. Just ask the chefs at Royal Waffle, which offers hot waffles with whatever you want inside, from the classic waffle ice-cream combo, to a daring waffle sandwich. The only limit is the customer’s imagination. Fair fans will also be treated to a classic with a re-creation of the 1965 World Fair’s favorite food, homemade Belgium waffles with farm fresh sliced strawberries and whipped cream. Tastefully British, which has been featured at many local fundraisers, will offer fish and chips dinners for sale. And, when it comes to big-boy foods, die-hard fair followers will have a bounty of new dishes to taste from to fill their cravings. At the Maison Crepe stand, fresh falafel, a fried chick-pea and parsley treat, will compete with fried mozzarella in corn flour and classic Arepas, popular Columbian dish made of ground corn dough. Carly’s Seaside Grill will bring the beach to the farm with trendy fish tacos and hearty lobster roll sandwiches. Roasted corn can be found behind the greenhouse. Some fan favorites from last year’s fair will also make a return. The Thai- Thai stand will be packing their pad-thai with noodles as well as the ever-popular chicken-on-a-stick kabob. Woods Wings will be featuring their award-winning wasabi pixi-dust sauce on their chicken wings and fried shrimp items. And classic fair fundamentals such as the German knockwurst and Polish pierogies will be on the plate for many visitors. Newton Rotary will continue to offer the “Wurst” sandwich at the fair, Knights of Columbus will feature steamed clams, breakfast sandwich, hamburgers and hot dogs, and the agriculture area food booth also offers breakfast, hamburgers and hot dogs. Roast beef sandwiches can always be found at the Branchville Rotary booth. “Of course, the gyros are always good,” Buerkle said.
