Contests, fun for the fair foodie

Professional
Bakers
The second annual
Professional Bakers
Challenge will be held 6
p.m. Monday, Aug. 8. This
contest challenges the
local professional baker to
submit items to be judged
by other professionals.
This year, crumb cake
will be judged.
Criteria:
• Cake must be made
from scratch
• Filling, if used, must
be made from frozen or
canned fruit
• Entry must be half
sheet or larger on disposable
board
• Cake to be presented
at the demonstration area
of the Richard Building by
6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 8
A plaque will be pre-
sented to the first, second
and third-place chefs.

Do you like your cheesecake
plain or with a fruit
topping? Cherry or pineapple?
Graham cracker

preference all will probably
be at the fifth annual
New Jersey’s Best
Cheesecake Contest at
the New Jersey State
Fair/ Sussex County Farm
and Horse Show.
The contest is open to
professionals as well as
non-professionals and will
be held on Friday, Aug. 12
at 5 p.m. at the Richards
Building. Entries must be
submitted by 4 p.m.
Pre-registration should
have been received by
July 25.

Gingerbread
This year marks the
14th year of the
Gingerbread Building
Contest at the New Jersey
State Fair/Sussex County
Farm and Horse Show.
Entries must be a haunted
house. Entries will be
judged on originality, overall
appearance, choice
and use of materials, and
difficulty of design. The
contest is Tuesday, Aug. 9.
at 2 p.m.

Blueberry
The “One and Only”
Blueberry Contest will be
held at fair Wednesday,
Aug. 10, at 5 p.m.
First--, second- and
third-place ribbons will be
awarded in each of the following
categories. • Jam,
jelly or preserves with
blueberries as the main
ingredient.
• Any baked item with
blueberries as a main
ingredient
• Any handicraft item
with a blueberry theme.
The competition will be
judged by the Creative
Arts for Home and Hobby
officials
This competition is open
to all New Jersey residents,
professional and
non professional.
Entry samples will be
distributed after judging.
Entries had to be mailed
by July 25. For

The home-brewed
beer competition
award ceremony
will be held Saturday,
Aug. 13,
at 11 a.m.
A side of veggies
The best of the season’s vegetables find a home in the
greenhouse during fair week. On Saturday, Aug. 6
at noon, the judges pick the winners.
Once they are finished, the show is open to fairgoers.
The Best of Show highlights the top specimens
of each class.
• Those entered into the scarecrow building class
start to assemble their entries on Sunday, Aug. 7.
The judging begins at 10 a.m., so the exhibitors need
to hustle to get their entry into “The World of Harry
Potter” competition. People’s Choice voting goes
on until Friday, Aug. 12 , with the rosette awarded
on Saturday, Aug. 13.
• Children’s Day on Tuesday, Aug. 9 will be
celebrated with the “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad
Veggie?” vegetable tasting challenge at 3 p.m. It is
limited to 10 participants in each group: ages 3-7
and 8-12.
• Stop into the Greenhouse on Aug.7 at 2 p.m. to
see Healthy Cooking by St. Clare’s. A chef will demonstrate
healthy cooking techniques using fresh
vegetables. Samples and recipes will be provided.
• Later that afternoon, the Weigh-in for the Great
New Jersey Zucchini Contest will be held at 5 p.m.
at the Farmers’ Market tent in front of the greenhouse.
Trade your zucchini
for ice cream
Get rid of those endless zucchini by taking
part in “Sneak Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s
Porch” Night Aug 12. Sneak your zucchini
onto the porch located by the Best of Show
Shed and it will be donated to the Salvation
Army Food Pantry. Beginning at 6 p.m. the
first 10 people to “get caught” sneaking zucchini
onto the porch will receive a coupon for
free ice cream at the 4-H Dairy Bar.
