Animals delight and educate every day at the fair
You may not see as many big red barns as there
have been in the past in Sussex County, but
agriculture is still an important part of life in the
county. That importance is mirrored by the
agricultural area of the fairgrounds.
There are five pole barns full of animals during
the 10-day run.
Dairy cows and beef cattle, swine, goats, sheep
and alpacas rotate through the livestock pavilion,
with breed and showmanship classes. The small
animal building is packed with chickens, geese,
pigeons, turkeys, rabbits, and cavey.
Fairgoers can visit the Farmland Dairies’
Milking Parlor to watch cows being milked and
listen to an explanation of the trip from cow to
store shelf.
Also, stop by the livestock pavilion and watch a
show being judged. The judges explain what the
criteria are, and how each animal conforms to
that criteria They seek to educate and inform the
public.
Education is also a function of the Rare Heritage
Breeds Educational Center. A member of the
American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, the
center’s mission is to “protect the past to protect
the future.” Information about breeds that are
disappearing and real live examples of some of
these breeds are displayed.
