Changes in the LMC Multimedia Studio, 651 PH
The LMC Multimedia Development Studio was created
to serve the multimedia development and training
needs of language faculty and graduate students
and continues to be a popular place to do video and
Web-based projects.
This year we have two new Dells and two new Apple
computers with lots of power for video editing
and compilation. Greg Johnson, our computer guru,
set them up over the summer, and many graduate
students and instructors are using them for projects,
for example, students in the Multimedia and Second
Language Acquisition class taught by Sue Otto.
Mariana Colombo (mariana-colombo@uiowa.edu)
is our graduate Student Assistant this year and is
http://www.uiowa.edu/lmc
ready to help with software questions. Her hours
are posted in the Studio and on the LMC home Web
page.
Some instructors are noticing that there are fewer
videocassette players on campus and would like to
transfer video clips to DVD. We have equipment in
the Studio to help with that and with editing short
clips for presentations in the classroom under Fair
Use Guidelines. Mariana will be able to help with
most questions you might have.
If you need to borrow video camcorders, laptops,
external hard drives, and data projectors for special
projects and presentation, please come to the LMC
office in 116 Phillips Hall to consult with us. The
Studio is located in 651 Phillips Hall, and keys may
be checked out from Sue Otto.

There were many acquisition requests in the past year.
Here are a few examples of the variety.
Questione di cuore (A Matter of Heart) (i0261, DVD,
100 min., 2009) A tale of the unlikely friendship
between a workingclass
mechanic and a
film industry windbag
in Italy brought together
by heart attacks, the
story follows Alberto
and Angelo, who find
themselves in adjacent
beds in the cardiac unit
of a Roman hospital.
Reveling in shared
adolescent behavior, the
two men continue to see
each other after their release. Angelo’s pregnant wife
Rossana doesn’t understand why her husband is so
keen to push Alberto onto the family, but as Angelo’s
condition deteriorates and his preoccupations increase,
it’s clear to the audience he’s ensuring his family will
have support after his death.
Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) (g0468,
DVD, 138 min., 2006) Oscar-winner for Best Foreign
Language Film. Before the collapse of the Berlin Wall,
East Germany’s population was closely monitored by
the State Secret Police or Stasi. Only a few citizens
were above suspicion, like renowned pro-Socialist
playwright Georg Dreyman, and were permitted to
lead private lives. But when a corrupt government
official falls for Georg’s
stunning actress-girlfriend,
Christa, an ambitious Stasi
policeman is ordered to
bug the writer’s apartment
to gain incriminating
evidence against the rival.
What the officer discovers
is about to dramatically
change their lives – as well
as his – in this seductive
political thriller.
Fingers that Tickle and Delight (e0550, DVD, 32 min.,
1995) Teacher, storyteller,
and comedienne, Evelyn
Zola (1924-2003) was
known as “America’s
First Lady of Deaf Senior
Citizens.” Using American
Sign Language (ASL), and
wearing her trademark
toga, she presents personal
recollections as well as deaf
humor, providing insight
from her perspective as a
successful deaf adult.
Against the Tide (f0642, DVD, 60 min. 2003) “The
Story of the Cajun People of Louisiana” is the epic
tale of an ethnic community
in North America. French
peasant farmers left western
France in the 17th century
to establish a new homeland
in Nova Scotia. After
deportation by the British,
the ancestors of the Cajun
People were able to reunite
their families in Louisiana.
They have maintained their
identity and language and
created their own unique musical and culinary
traditions, which are known worldwide.
We Built this City: Paris (f0638, DVD, 45 min.,
2004) Engineering has played a crucial role in
the 2,000-year history of
Paris. Eugene Houseman
spearheaded the evolution of
Paris in the late 18th century,
producing the infrastructure,
wide boulevards, and grand
buildings that give the city its
singular charm. Top French
historians, engineers, and
archaeologists analyze his
work in this video.
Quotable Quotes
v“The limits of my language mean the limits of
my world.”
Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889 – 1951)
v“You can always tell a Midwestern couple in Europe
because they will be standing in the middle of a
busy intersection looking at a wind-blown map and
arguing over which way is west. European cities,
with their wandering streets and undisciplined alleys,
drive Midwesterners practically insane.”
