INDUSTRy PERSPECTIVE
A portfolio of CHALLENGES
We live today in a
world that is very
different from the
Cold War era, yet
one set of threats to
the undersea sector
has in effect been
complemented by
another.
The ever broadening portfolio
of challenges that face all
concerned with security and
safety in the subsea environment
will have a significant impact on
the development and operation of
the key maritime platforms. These
platforms are having to respond to
change at an unprecedented rate
through technological innovation
and the adoption of new operating
concepts. Inevitably these involve
cost at a time when many defence
and security budgets around the
world are being squeezed.
One thing that
does not change is
the hostile nature
of the undersea
environment. A
highly corrosive
medium that
exerts enormous
pressures, it
demands the very
best in technology
and practices,
which will always drive costs.
However, there is no escaping the
fact that much of the infrastructure
on which our modern society is
increasingly dependent - especially
communications and energy - are
located on the seabed. Protecting
them against man-made and
naturally occurring threats is a
duty that cannot be shirked.
The sea floor is also an increasingly
important source of extractive
energy production which, as the
media constantly reminds us,
can lead to increased tension
704
There is no escaping
the fact that much of
the infrastructure on
which our modern
society is increasingly
dependent are located
on the seabed
and potential conflict between
nations. Sub-sea mining is now
becoming a reality, adding a
further layer of complexity. Then
there is the threat of destruction
or disruption by terrorist attack.
The submarine has its origins as
an asymmetric weapon. Modern,
advanced submarines are very
potent weapons, but we have to
be equally prepared to counter
their less sophisticated asymmetric
brethren: mines, divers and
unsophisticated subsea vehicles,
either manned or unmanned.
Looking into the
future of the global
defence and security
manufacturing
industry, it is well
known that those
countries that have
traditionally bought
platforms and
equipment from the
established provider
nations are now
seeking to develop their own
indigenous capability. Where the
undersea sector is concerned
this will almost certainly create
opportunities for Western nations
to license the construction and
upgrade of submarines and
equipment in the emerging
economies.
““
That said, it should not be forgotten
that the United States and some
major European nations are
replacing their submarine fleets.
Despite the challenges, this is
still a time of opportunity.
tHE NEED for INFORMED DEBATE
HAS NEVEr BEEN GrEAtEr
It is with great pleasure
that I welcome you to UDT
2013. For more than a
quarter of a century UDT
has been the seminal
international forum for
preeminent individuals
across the maritime
community to discuss the
evolving challenges that
dominate the undersea
defence agenda.
Primarily I extend our thanks
to all UDT exhibitors, from
System Integrators to
the small specialist suppliers,
for their continued support of
UDT. With 85 exhibitors on the
floor this year, we’re expecting
a busy show. I’d particularly
encourage visits to the First Time
Exhibitor Zone where we have 8
companies joining us for the very
first time. Along with over 20
new or returning
exhibitors
across the floor.
The exhibition
floor features
everything from
missiles and
diver detection
devices, EOD
products, mini
ROVs, to Surface
Abandonment
Suits.
WELCOME - EVENT DIRECTOR
The flexibility
to fulfil a range
of roles is central to the future
capability of undersea fleets. At
the same time the pressures of
cost and technical complexity are
driving increased collaboration
between nations and companies,
while modularity and commercial
off-the-shelf technologies are
high on many agendas. UDT’s
exhibition and conference reflects
715
“
The UDT conference
will examine
how innovation
and engineering
expertise can help
meet the growing
portfolio of threats
to the underwater
environment
the demands on this sector.
Over three days the UDT
conference will examine how
innovation and engineering
expertise can help meet the
growing portfolio of threats to the
underwater environment. The
agenda comprises four streams
covering: future operational
and strategic issues; innovative
solutions; flexible technologies;
and advanced research.
I would like to
extend thanks to
the UDT Conference
Committee, with
particular reference
to the Conference
Chairman, Raimund
Wallner, for their
continued dedication,
valued support
and hard work
which has gone in
to the production
of such a high
quality conference
programme. We are also indebted
to our speakers and I would like
to thank them for bringing their
much valued knowledge and
experience to UDT 2013.
UDT 2013 is an exciting event
for challenging times. I very
much hope you will benefit from
your visit, and I look forward to
meeting you at the show.
NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND
EMERGING CHALLENGES
Maintaining its focus
on the vital issues
challenging the
undersea sector, this
year’s UDT conference
covers a broad portfolio,
including underwater
warfare and the
contemporary threats
facing civilian subsea
infrastructure.
Last year’s introduction of
plenary sessions to provide
an overall context for the
conference themes was a great
success and we are repeating it
this year. Our overarching theme
is ‘Consolidating Progress: Flexible
Technologies and Innovative,
Cost-effective Solutions in the
Underwater Environment’ and I am
delighted to tell you that our panel
includes Vice Admiral Axel Schimpf,
Chief of Staff of the
German Navy;
Vice Admiral Andreas
Krause, Deputy
Commander of
NATO’s HQ Maritime
Command Naples;
Rear Admiral Morten
Jacobsen, Chief
of Procurement
Staff Norwegian
Defence Logistics Organisation;
and Commodore Richard Stokes,
Head of Deterrent and Underwater
Capability, Royal Navy.
The plenary sessions will be
followed by specialised sessions
featuring presentations from
leading experts drawn from
the international underwater
community. Our four conference
themes will focus on Future
Operational and Strategic Context;
Innovative Solutions; Flexible
Technologies; and Advanced
Research. To ensure delegates
obtain maximum benefit from
their attendance, each session is
organised by its field of speciality.
706
a highly influential
forum for everyone
with an interest in the
future of the dynamic
undersea sector
These are: Anti Submarine
Warfare; Mine Counter Measures;
Submarine Warfare; Maritime
Security; Platforms; Weapons;
Sensors; and C4I.
Days 2 and 3 will also begin with
plenary sessions, one of which
will examine what the future holds
for the world’s most inhospitable
environment. The topics under
review include new technologies,
contested areas, emerging
challenges and
opportunities for
the security of
the underwater
domain, with
contributions from
senior NATO
representatives,
top civil servants
and industry chiefs.
The final plenary will address
the important issue of crossover
technologies, with industry and
private sector panelists discussing
how an arena which was once
dominated by submarine and mine
warfare is now of fundamental
importance to key commercial
sectors, such as communications
and energy.
The UDT 2013 conference has
been designed to uphold the proud
tradition of 26 years of providing
a highly influential forum for
everyone with an interest in the
future of the dynamic undersea
sector. I very much hope that you
find your participation interesting
Cross-over technologies in the expanding underwater domain
The underwater arena, once dominated by anti-submarine and mine warfare, has rapidly evolved
to include new stakeholders from energy to communications and maritime security. In some
instances, agents from these sectors are developing concepts and capabilities that outstrip those
traditionally employed by the defence community.
This session will discuss current innovation in cross-over technologies from the non-military
Interoperability and Innovation in Unmanned Undersea Systems; Staying
Ahead of the UUV Rush in MCM
New and Evolving Defence Applications for Autonomous Undersea Systems.
As autonomous maritime vehicles systems are experiencing a boom in
commercial use, there has been an attendant rise in the discovery of new
defence applications. As confidence in the use of these systems continues
to grow, those missions that have long been relegated to the realm of the
unlikely, are now seen as feasible and relatively cost effective.
Pegasus Thruster - Hands Free Diver Propulsion
Pegasus Thrusters provides a hands free, lightweight propulsion unit (DPV)
for underwater missions ranging from port security and combat missions to
various inspections, to ship husbandry.
CAT Surveyor: USV Solution for Harbour and Inland Waters Surveillance and Search
CAT-Surveyor is a novel USV solution for harbour and inland waters
surveillance and search. It is based on a small catamaran type USV,
supporting side scan and multibeam imaging sonars, combined with a
mini-ROV which allows to make real time visual contact on acoustic targets.
SeeTrack Neptune: An Adaptive Planning Tool for Optimising the Execution
of AUV Operations
SeeTrack Neptune supports high-level, goal-based, mission descriptions and
the matching of mission requirements against vehicle capabilities. SeeTrack
Neptune includes behaviours capable of adapting the mission, based on changes
in the environment, in asset status, availability and in mission objectives.
VideoRay CoPilot Reacquire Identify (RI) by SeeByte ROV
The CoPilot RI ROV with Doppler Velocity Logging (DVL), Multi-Beam Forward
Imaging Sonar, GPS and SeeByte autonomous software provides simple
on-screen click navigation and vehicle control to go to underwater locations
using geodetic coordinates or run preset search routes.
Technical Packaging Solutions
In mission critical operations the failure of the equipment is not an option.
Everything starts with the right protection of that mission critical equipment,
being the packaging. Therefore one needs a proper understanding of packaging
concepts and specifications. Every facet of the hole packaging engineering
and customisation process will be explained by definition and by examples
(supplied by Peli-Hardigg in the military market).
Cogging Torque in Marine Propellers
71 37
INNOVATION SHOWCASE
Cogging torque in marine propellers bigger than 1 MW, as a phenomenon
associated with Permanent Magnet machines, additional oscillatory
components, methods for reducing specially in low speed.
TRDI Doppler Navigation. Looking Back and Moving Forward
TRDI DVLs enable maritime navigation and allows for underwater vehicle
autonomy. With a need to maintain long range, small size and low power,
TRDI’s sonar development allows for virtually every underwater platform to
integrate a DVL.
The Challenges of Low Order Disposal
Low-order disposal is a highly effective form of explosive ordnance disposal
(EOD) and conventional munitions disposal (CMD), however, achieving a
successful low-order can be difficult to achieve due to the number of variables
involved in the task; additionally, the complication of initiating a high-order
event is also a significant risk to operations.
New Underwater Threats in an Asymmetric World: A Concern?
The present work addresses the principles behind underwater explosions
and the resulting shock load which may impose a threat commercial civilian
structures are not designed to resist even in small intensities. It also addresses
how differences in design affect the response of marine structures to
underwater shock, which also contrasts with current design options for
marine structures. It does not aim to answer the problem but to instigate a
critical thinking about it.
The MarCE Initiative
Enterprise welcomes small to medium sized enterprises, academic
organisations and larger companies. We aim to engage innovative defence
and non-defence organisations based in the UK and overseas.
