Talking about the past 2 Vous avez sans doute remarqué dans cet Explore que nous avons
parlé au passé. Pour parler au passé en français, on utilise plusieurs temps. Pouvez-vous indiquer
lesquels ?
...............................................................................................................................
...............................................................................................................................
En anglais, le principal temps au passé est le prétérit. Il s’utilise pour décrire une action qui est terminée
au moment où on la raconte. Ainsi par exemple :
6Scribes noted down the pharaoh’s messages.
Les scribes prenaient en notes les messages du pharaon.
Defi nition: ‘Fairy tale’ is an English/French/German term for a type of short narrative corresponding to
the French phrase conte de fée/histoire de lutins/conte fantastique. In fairy tales, you can fi nd folkloric
characters like fairies, goblins, trolls, giants or gnomes and usually magic or enchantments.
History: A lot of English/French/Italian tales became famous like Alice in Wonderland, The Three Little
Pigs and Jack and the Beanstalk. But you also know French/German/English tales like Beauty and the
Beast, Little Red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots. Pinocchio is Italian and Snow White has got German
origins. The most famous fairy-tale writers are the English Lewis Carroll and Joseph Jacobs, the French
Charles Perrault/Charles Dickens/Richard Perrault, the German Brothers Grimm/JohnGramm and the
Danish Hans Andersen/Petersen/Hansen. They fi rst published their work in the 18th and 19th/16th and
17th/20th and 21st centuries. In the 20th and 21st/16th and 17th/18th and 19th centuries, Walt Disney,
Warner bros, and others adapted a lot of tales into television series, fi lms or cartoons.

Transparent words 2 Transparent words can help you understand a text. How many can you
fi nd? Be careful: there are ‘faux-amis’ too! (Faux-amis are words that seem to be identical to the
French word but in fact have a very different meaning!)
I read magazines when I am at the self-service. I go jogging and afterwards I listen to jazz. My favourite
snacks are popcorn and chewing gum. I wear sweat shirts and jeans. I play tennis, and last week I played
