This afternoon at 3 p.m. our 2 nd graders will be receiving their First Holy
Communion. I pray that their excitement and enthusiasm will spread like a virus
throughout our parish in the coming weeks. It was a most sacred moment for each
of us when we received our First Holy Communion. That is, however, no less true
about every Holy Communion we have received since then. Throughout our lives, there
should remain in our minds and hearts a kind of wonder and awe at what we are doing as
we receive the very body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus into our souls.
Receiving Holy Communion worthily brings about a “holy union” with our Lord. This holy
union was the grace our first parents knew in the Garden of Eden, lost by original sin.
When we receive our Lord at Holy Mass, he is uniting us once again with the Blessed Trinity
– Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are being sanctified by this supreme gift of the very life
and person of Jesus. At the same time, we enter into a holy communion with everyone else
at the Mass we are attending. We enter into a holy communion with Catholics throughout
the world who are also at Mass that day. Furthermore, we enter into a holy communion with
the angels and saints of every time and place who are gathered around the throne of God,
giving him honor and praise. As you receive our Lord at Mass, let your imagination see the
full communion of minds and hearts with whom you are united in that moment.
At the same time, let your heart yearn for everyone to be drawn into this holy communion
with God. Imagine what it is like for those who no longer attend Mass and receive our Lord
to be outside of this communion. Jesus said, “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man
and drink His blood, you do not have life within you.” (John 6:55) The act of receiving Holy
Communion signifies that I believe all that the Church teaches. It means that I believe in the
real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It means that my moral life is free from grave
(mortal) sin. This is one of the greatest longings for non-catholic people who join us for
Mass here. But because they do not share our faith and believe all that the Church
teaches, they are not able to receive Holy Communion.
Furthermore, if you and I don’t believe all that the Church teaches, we should not be
receiving Holy Communion either. If we do not believe in the real presence of Jesus in the
Eucharist, we should not be receiving Holy Communion. And if there is serious, grave sin in
our lives, we ought not to be receiving Holy Communion. St. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians
11: 27-29 “Therefore whoever eats the bread and drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will
have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. A person should examine himself, and
so eat the bread and drink the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the
body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.” And St. Paul goes on to say something even
stronger in the following verses.
Inside every missalette published in this country – in our missalettes note the inside of
the front cover – there are “Guidelines for the Reception of Communion.” It is required by
the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) that this information is
published so that all of us might know these guidelines and share them with our non-
Catholic guests who may join us for Mass. It is important that we all become familiar with
this teaching. Often times our non-Catholic brothers and sisters will invite us to join them for
what they offer as “communion” in their churches. Of course this is a gracious gesture of
hospitality, but for us the reception of Holy Communion is an act of faith. Since we do not
believe their “communion” is a participation in the Body and Blood of Christ, it is not our
practice as Catholics to receive “communion” in other churches.
There is so much more I would like to teach with regard to the Eucharist, but on this day,
let us rejoice with our children who are receiving our Lord for the first time in Holy
Communion. Let us be for them good examples of the value of the Eucharist and how to
receive our Lord with great reverence. And let today be for us all an occasion to examine
our own Eucharistic practice and open our hearts to a holy communion of life with the
Blessed Trinity, with the Communion of Saints and with one another in this parish.
This Thursday, May 9, is the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord, a
Holy Day of Obligation. Masses for the Feast will be on Wednesday
evening, May 8 at 6:00 p.m. and on Thursday, May 9, at 6:30 and 8:15
a.m. and 12:10 p.m.
SPICE
June 6, 2013
Christ the King parish was founded nearly 60 years
ago. In 1979 our parishioners had the vision to
establish the Christ the King Educational Trust
fund that has grown to over $4.5 million dollars.
The Trust was established with the intention of insuring the
availability of a Catholic education to all children of the parish.
The Trust supplements the school and religious education
programs. In 2012 it covered $262,500 in tuition assistance and
school operating expenses. Additionally, the Trust funds over 32
scholarships for current CTK students, as well as for graduates
attending local catholic high schools. The Trust is completely
separate from the general parish budget and relies solely on the
participation and generosity of all CTK parishioners. It represents
the future of our parish and our school.
In an effort to sustain our founding parishioners’ mission and
continue to secure our future, we invite you to join us on June 6, at
6 p.m. and prepare to be enchanted! In celebration of the 25th
Anniversary of Broadway’s longest running musical, Phantom of
the Opera, you will be treated to music of the night far beneath
the majesty and splendor of the Paris Opera House, where hides
the Phantom. In a shadowy existence you will have the chance to
bid on wonderful items from our live auction including; a dinner
hosted and prepared by Msgr. Joe Hanefeldt, vacation packages
to Okoboji and Broadway and much more. You will enjoy a
fabulous dinner and an evening of fun and friendship as we
celebrate and support our commitment to Christ the King Parish
and Catholic education. In your midst, we will honor our 2013
Regnum Dei award recipients Jerry and Mary Ries who have
shown selfless dedication and numerous years of service to Christ
the King. So, watch for your invitation in the mail, talk to your
friends and plan to attend SPICE. Support Parish Investment in
Catholic Education. This is an evening you won’t want to miss!
Event cost is $100 per person with a $50 tax deduction. For
further information contact the rectory at 402-391-3606.
Looking for additional sacristans!
For many years Trudy Tighe generously served our
parish as our sacristan. Trudy is no longer able to
serve in that capacity and will be truly missed. While
we already enjoy the help of a couple of volunteers,
we are in need of additional help in the sacristy.
Sacristans set out the sacred vessels and see that the
hosts, water and wine are ready for Mass. They set
out the books and change altar candles. Additionally,
they help organize the sacristy. If you are interested in
serving our parish in this position, either for a daily
Mass or on weekends, or if you would like more
information about serving as a sacristan, please
contact Msgr. Hanefeldt here at the parish office 402-
sessions on the subject of Faith and the New
Evangelization. Sessions begin at 7 p.m. in
16 and 23rd. Come and enjoy this weekly time of
prayer, reflection and conversation about living and
sharing our faith in the third millennium.
This week the RCIA will be discussing
one of Matthew Kelly’s Seven Spiritual
Pillars of Catholicism, Spiritual
Reading. First and foremost is Holy Scripture and the
Catechism. Other suggestions might be the Church
Fathers, Documents of Vatican II, Lives of the Saints,
Catholic Magazines and Newspapers. There are
DVD’s of a spiritual nature that also are helpful.
Matthew Kelly says, “the goal of spiritual reading is to
ignite the soul with a desire to grow in virtue and thus
become the best version of oneself. Spiritual reading
encourages us to live a life of holiness.” Let us
continue to pray for our neophytes as they truly begin
their journey along with all of us towards eternal life.
Hail Mary! May is the month we honor Mary.
“...do not let your hearts be troubled or
afraid.” (John 14:27)
When we let the daily pressures of life
trouble us, we begin to believe that we are responsible
for taking care of everything. This causes us to
frantically cling to our time and treasure. Yet, Jesus
tells us not to be troubled or afraid. Take a deep
breath, pray and place your trust in God. When you
do, you will be a better steward of all that God has
placed in your care.
