Celebrate ‘The Year of Faith’ - Sacred Heart’s Pilgrimage 

to Canada on August 5 th to 9 th , 2013 

Join Fr. James Starasinich & Deacon Stephen Rodack of Sacred Heart Church, 

Lyndhurst on pilgrimage to Canada. The shrines we will visit will include St. 

Joseph’s Oratory Shrine in Montreal, Our Lady of the Cape in Three Rivers and 

Saint Anne de Beaupre Basilica Shrine in Quebec City.. There will be time for 

private devotions and sightseeing. The cost of $535.00 per person includes 4 

nights hotel (double occupancy), 8 meals, and bus transportation. Passports are 

required. A deposit of $300 per person is required as soon as possible and the 

balance of the payment will be due on July 12th.

Serrans to Celebrate 59 th Annual Archbishop’s Vocation Fund Dinner 

On Tuesday, May 21, 2013, the Archdiocesan Clubs of Serra International, 

District 22 will celebrate the Archbishop’s Vocation Fund Dinner at Nanina’s in the 

Park, Belleville, NJ following a reception at 6:00 pm. the funds raised at this event 

are used by the Vocations Office to help young men and women in the pursuit of 

their vocations to the priesthood and religious life. 

Tickets for the event are $80.00 per person. Tables will be arranged for eight

The Boston Bombings: the Devastating Reality of Evil 

One moment, people were cheering, anxiously 

anticipating their friends crossing the finish line in the 

Boston marathon. The next moment, stunned and 

bloody, they were fleeing in fright from harms’ way. 

Chechen-born Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, and his 19- yearold 

brother Dzhokha had turned their would-be victory 

shouts into victims’ screams of horror and pain. The 

bomb blasts of these two young terrorists killed 3 persons 

and wounded over 180 other innocent bystanders. The 

instant and continuous media coverage of the bombing 

left the rest of us shocked and unsettled. 

With well-calculated cruelty, the two brothers devised 

their bombs to seriously maim or kill as many people as 

possible at the Boston Marathon of April 1, Patriots’ Day. 

The shrieks of horror. The bleeding and dismembered 

individuals strewn on the street. The deaths. Bodily pain 

and emotional grief: these were the weapons that the 

brothers used to create a scenario of fear and chaos. 

With the older brother dead and the younger brother in 

custody, there began the long, tedious process of 

searching out motives and examining links to other 

individuals or groups. 

Terrorism in any form and in any place makes us feel 

insecure and vulnerable. And this feeling is not new. We 

have suffered through this before. In 1995, Timothy 

McVeigh bombed the Murrah Federal Building in 

Oklahoma City, killing 9 people. In 1996, the bombings at 

the Atlanta Olympic Games killed two people and injured 

111 others. In 1999, two students killed 12 of their fellow 

students and one teacher in a shooting rampage at 

Columbine High School in Colorado. In 2012, Adam 

Lanza killed 20 students and 6 adults in Newtown, 

Connecticut. Who could ever forget the untold harm and 

incredible suffering inflicted on thousands of Americans 

on 9/11 in 2001? The Boston bombs are not unique. All 

these murderous attacks rob us of our peace and 

tranquility. 

When we begin to list the growing number of violent, 

terrorist acts at shopping malls, movie theaters, schools 

sporting events, political rallies and religious gatherings, 

we question. Why would anyone want to harm or kill 

others for any reason? Why kill and injure on such a 

large scale? Why so much hatred, violence and disregard 

of life? 

These questions torment us because they bring us 

face to face with the problem of evil. How can there be 

evil, and of such a great magnitude, in a world created by 

an all-loving God? Has our world actually come from the 

hands of God who cares about us and watches over us? 

How can the world be really good if there is such 

darkness lurking in unexpected places ready to rob us of 

life itself? 

These questions are so perplexing and so painful that, 

if left unanswered, they lead more individuals to abandon 

their faith than any other reason. If God is real, if God is 

all-good, how could he ever allow evil to exist? 

Philosophy and theology can provide an answer. But, in 

the end, that answer may not heal broken hearts.

God has created us with the frightful gift of freedom. 

We are not puppets on a string. We are not predetermined 

in our actions. We have the freedom of 

choice to do good and to avoid evil. The reason? God 

has created us for love. God who is perfect love wills to 

give himself to us. 

God loves us and he wills that we love him in return. 

Not because he is selfish, but because he is generous 

and wants to fill us with love. Love cannot be coerced. 

Love must be free. And so God gives us the freedom to 

love him by doing the good that leads to him. But, this 

also means he leaves us free to do the evil that turns us 

away from him and our true happiness. 

“When freedom does not have a purpose [of love], 

when it does not wish to know anything about the rule of 

[love] engraved in the hearts of men and women, when it 

does not listen to the voice of conscience, it turns against 

humanity and society” (Blessed John Paul II). But, he 

allows it to happen because he respects his own gift of 

our human freedom. because God is infinitely wise and 

all-powerful as well as all-loving, he can bring to in this 

world an even greater good when evil happens. 

The immediate and heroic actions of those who rush to 

aid the victims of violence and terrorism. The first 

responders. The police. The medical personnel. The 

casual bystanders who immediately get involved. Their 

heroic goodness gives us comfort. But the greater 

question still remains. Why did the evil have to happen in 

the first place? 

No rational or intellectually accurate answer to the 

question of evil will ever suffice. Someone whom we love 

dies through sickness, an accident or violence. Hundreds 

of people lose their lives in an event of catastrophic 

devastation. We shed tears that cannot wash away the 

pain. Evil does more than confound the mind. It tugs at 

the heart. It leaves us empty and longing for relief. 

As God’s logic is beyond our rational explanations, so 

also his goodness is greater than all the evil in our world. 

God does not ignore our pain and sorrow. God loves us 

so much that he sent his Son and allowed him to suffer on 

a cross the cruel effect of all evil. Evil contradicts the 

goodness of God. That is why God’s answer is the Cross! 

Christ on two beams set against each other. 

Our human, finite reason alone will never answer the 

question of evil. But faith can. For faith is much more 

than an intellectual assent to the goodness of God. It is 

the heart trusting in God even in the moments of 

darkness. What we cannot see by reason, we can 

experience in faith. On the Cross, God took our suffering 

to himself. He is with us always, even in our pain and 

grief. He does not abandon us. The heart that knows his 

presence through faith will always find the way to love.

Silna i odważna niewiasta. Przełożona i dyrektor 

pielęgniarek w szpitalu, oficjalnie protestowała przeciw 

antyreligijnym zachowaniom reżimu nazistów i stawała w 

obronie biednych, słabych i chorych, mówiła o pokoju i 

demokracji. Siostra była schwytaana przez SS, uwięziona, 

skazana na śmierć i ścięta we Wiedniu 30 marca 1943 r. 

Zabito ją razem z komunistą, któremu pomogła spokojnie 

przygotować się na ten moment w przeddzień ich śmierci. 

Ofiara błogosławionej Marii Restituty (z domu: Helen 

Kafka) – jedynej zakonnicy skazanej przez reżim 

Narodowego Socjalizmu i osądzonej na śmierć- została 

wspomniana w bazylice św. Bartomeusza na wyspie 

Timber. Kardynał Chrispopher Schonborn, Arcybiskup 

Wiednia celebrował 4 marca Mszę św., w której wzięły 

udział Siostry Franciszkanki Chrześcijańskiego 

Miłosierdzia, one to ofiarowały bazylice krzyż, który 

Siostra Restituta nosiła przy pasku swojego habitu. 

Relikwia została umieszczona w ołtarzu poświęconym 

męczennikom Narodowego Socjalizmu, relikwię tę 

przyniosła kobieta, która urodziła się w 1941 r. w szpitalu, 

w którym przez wiele lat pracowała ta siostra. W 

następnym roku po Wielkim Jubileuszu 2000 r. Jan Paweł 

II zdecydował, że bazylika św. Bartymeusza na wyspie 

Tyber stała się pomnikiem "nowych męczenników" i 

świadków wiary XX i XXI wieku. 

Siostra Restituta urodziła się 1 maja 1894 r. w Brnie- 

Husowice w kraju dziś zwanym Republiką Czech, w 

ubogiej rodzinie. Helen Kafka wzrastała w stolicy Austrii 

Wiedniu tam też potem pracowała w szpitalu Lainz z 

siostrami Franciszkankami Chrześcijańskiego 

Miłosierdzia. w 1914 roku wstąpiła do tego Zgromadzenia 

i przyjęła imię Maria Restituta. Od 1919 roku do 1942 

pracowała w szpitalu we Wiedniu w Modling, gdzie była 

pielęgniarką posługującą przy operacjach i jako 

anestozjolog była wielce poważana za jej profesjonalizm, 

uwielbiana za jej za wrażliwość społeczną, za jej 

energiczny charakter także w końcu zasłużyła sobie na 

żartobliwe imię "Siostra Rezoluta". 

Po włączeniu Austrii do Niemiec siostra Restituta wiele 

mówiła i czyniła na polu sprawiedliwości i ochrony 

godności człowieka. Broniła wolności religijnej przeciw 

nazistom i sprzeciwiała się zdejmowaniu krzyży z sal

szpitalnych. Nie godziła się na wieszaniu obok siebie 

swastyki i krzyża. Krytykowała także "wojskową pieśń", 

która mówiła o demokracji, pokoju i wolnej Austrii. 

Śledzona była w końcu przez dwie kobiety, a jeden z 

lekarzy, który współpracował z SS doniósł na nią i po 

jakimś czasie zwolnił ją ze szpitala. 

Po aresztowaniu przez Gestapo w Środę Popielcową, 18 

lutego 1942 r. została skazana na śmierć 30 marca 1943 

r. Przed śmiercią prosiła, aby kapelan położyl znak krzyża 

na jej czole. Jak wyznał jej współwięzień: "Ona była 

świętą ponieważ w tej sytacji w jakiej była podnosila na 

duchu każdego,dodawała odwagi, miała pozytywna 

postawę i zaufanie wobec Boga". 

21 czerwca 1998 r. została beatyfikowana we Wiedniu 

razem ze sługą Bożym Jakubem Kernem i Antonim Maria 

Szwartzem przez Jana Pawła II, który w dniu beatyfikacji 

powiedział: " Patrząc na błogosławioną S. Restitutę 

możemy dostrzec do jak wielkiej doskonałości 

wewnętrznej może dojść człowiek, który ufa Bogu". Ona w 

obronie krzyża zaryzykowała własne życie. Ona w swoim 

sercu nosiła krzyż i dała temu świadectwo w dniu 

egzekucji, gdy prosiła kapelana więziennego aby na jej 

czole położył znak krzyża". I dałej Jan Paweł II 

kontynuował: " Wiele rzeczy może być od nas chrześcijan 

zabrane ale krzyż jako znak zbawienia nie może nam być 

od nas wzięty. Nie pozwólmy aby krzyż usunięto nam z 

życia publicznego". Musimy słuchać naszego sumienia 

które mówi: "Musimy słuchać bardziej Boga niż ludzi " 

(Dz.Ap. 5,29 ). 

Błogosławiona Restituta Helen Kafka była kobietą, która z 

odwagą dawała świadectwo i była w zgodzie z własnym 

sumieniem nawet w okolicznościach bardzo trudnych. " 

Nie ważne jak daleko jesteśmy od tego kim jesteśmy, nie 

ważne co jest nam zabrane" pisała z więzienia "nikt nie 

może nam zabrać wiary z naszych serc. W ten sposób 

możemy budować ołtarz w naszym sercu".
