Thanks, Mom, for the love.
Unconditional love fascinates me. Through the
shallows of anxiety and the heights of ego, unconditional
love floats, unwavering. Even with tempers
flaring and insecurity penetrating, those who give
and receive unconditional love take emotional hits
with grace.
I often remind myself: do not take advantage of
your mother’s unconditional love. She, my mother
specifically, has never once made me feel unloved or
as if my random antics were burdensome, although
I’m sure they were.
About two weeks ago, I called my mom in a frantic
rage about fielding rabid Sunday morning phone
calls, city drivers blocking my car into the garage
and subsequently running late for practice. Of
course, no parts of those were her fault. But she

knows how I need her. She knows I need her to listen
to my breakdowns without the fear of causing
some inexplicable and permanent damage.
That’s unconditional love; that’s my mom.
From reading your Mom of the Year submissions,
I’ve learned that your mothers are fighters.
Battling cancer, battling misfortune, battling you.
Your mothers are teachers of life and academics.
They are smart, fashionable and generous. They volunteer,
they minister and they spend a good amount
of time playing chauffeur. They feed you. They tuck
you in. And they are, in your eyes, amazing cooks.
I apologize for my thievery; I’m stealing some of
your quotes for the end of my “I love my mom
because” letter. Your sentiments happily reminded
me of my own mom; ya’ll just say it so well.

She always checks on my family,
making sure we’re happy or if
there’s anything we need. She
knows my symptoms of a bad
mood. She always checks my
homework. You might just think
I’m lying. But I promise, I’m not.
It’s a very big job, and she’s very
good at it.
Sometimes I may just ignore her,
but then I think she has been
through all of this before and she
knows best so I end up doing
what she says.
I would like to follow in mom’s
footsteps and be smart just like
her.
She will let me be what I want.
She is always willing to try
harder.
She lets me have a day where I
pick everything.
My mom takes the time to make
my family a nice dinner, which if
you get to know our family, it is
a big deal!
She has maintained the perspective
that “everything happens for
a reason.”
She buys me toys.
I know it hasn’t been easy.She
raised three children.
I don’t want to disappoint her by
making the wrong choices.
Regardless of my crazy antics,
she always will love and support
whatever it is I do.
One little joke will keep her
laughing for days.
She is always there for me when
I am having a hard time.
I love how my mom tries so
hard to keep us out of trouble.
If I had to write a book about all
the things you have done and
sacrificed for me, I would never
finish.
The world is better because of
her.
She is an amazing person who
laughs and loves without limits.
She is either driving us, and our
friends, picking us up or staying
up till we get home.
My mom is a champion survivor
and she is my mom of the year.
Our mother’s love shown to my
brothers and me was something
that, in childhood, we didn’t see
often provided to our peers and
even now in adulthood still don’t
often see.
This is my mom, Carol.
