assemblages have been identified as pertaining to the Tobique Complex, or<br />

where components <strong>of</strong> the site were assigned to the transitional period in<br />

question by the report's author or authors. All sites were pr<strong>of</strong>essionally exca­<br />

vated, so provenience data are, for the most part, available. These sites are<br />

listed in Chapter 4.<br />

A "chronological gap· appears at a pivotal point in the region's chronology<br />

that has complicated the in-depth examination <strong>of</strong> cultural development for Maine<br />

and the Maritime Provinces. In this chapter, a series <strong>of</strong> hypotheses were<br />

presented lor testing. This may lead to clarification <strong>of</strong> this time period.<br />

Chapter 2 represents a description <strong>of</strong> the region's culture history during the<br />

lale and Terminal Archaic and Early Ceramic Periods. The environmental<br />

context for these time periods is described in Chapter 3. Artifact descriptions<br />

ar,d analyses are presented in Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 describes the<br />

conclusions <strong>of</strong> the research.
