explorati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gulf coast<br />

and Oman has provided informati<strong>on</strong> about<br />

chr<strong>on</strong>ology, city plans, diet, burial practices<br />

and much else, which is <strong>on</strong>ly slowly becoming<br />

available in <strong>the</strong> west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Penin-<br />

sula. Never<strong>the</strong>less, even accepting this,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are clear differences between <strong>the</strong> two<br />

regi<strong>on</strong>s, and <strong>the</strong>se are worth exploring.<br />

To <strong>the</strong> epigraphist, <strong>the</strong> most striking c<strong>on</strong>trast<br />

between <strong>the</strong>m is in <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> art<br />

<strong>of</strong> writing. In northwest <strong>Arabia</strong> <strong>the</strong>re was<br />
