Acadesine Does not Improve Outcomes
of Open Heart Surgery, Though Safety of
Operation has Improved
(July 10, 2012 - Insidermedicine)
A drug designed to protect the heart
during heart bypass surgery does
not reduce risk of serious events,
stroke or death, though the surgery
itself has become much safer,
according to a report published
in the Journal of the American
Medical Association.
Committee and Investigators.
Effect of adenosine-regulating
agent acadesine on morbidity
and mortality associated with
coronary artery bypass grafting: the RED-CABG randomized
controlled trial. JAMA. 2012 Jul 11;308(2):157-64.
Here is some information about coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG):
• It is used to treat severe coronary heart disease, in which plaque has
built up inside the arteries and blocked blood flow to the heart
• During the operation, a healthy artery is attached to the blocked one,
creating an alternate route for blood to reach the heart
• It is the most common type of open heart surgery in the US
Researchers from Duke University Medical Center studied over 3,000
CABG patients randomized to receive either the regulating agent,
Acadesine, or a placebo during their operation. Acadesine was designed
to improve blood flow and perfusion and protect the heart during bypass
surgery.
After one month, researchers found that patients taking Acadesine had
no reduced risk of stroke, serious events or death: 5% of patients had
a severe event following the procedure, regardless of if they took the
drug or placebo. The researchers note, however, that a 5% complication
rate was significantly lower than what was expected, an aspect that
demonstrates great improvements in the surgery safety.
We spoke with Dr. Mark Newman, PI of the study, who offered some further
insight. “Today’s research finds that the regulating agent Acadesine does
not improve outcomes for CABG patients, though the surgery itself has
become much safer.”
Grant Overview
The DREAM Innovation Grant (DIG) supports
innovative high-risk, and potentially high-reward
investigations to accelerate anesthesia and pain
management research.
Research deemed innovative may introduce a new
paradigm, challenge current paradigms, look at
existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit
other uniquely creative qualities. The DIG promotes
new ideas; therefore, proposals need not include
preliminary data. However, a solid rationale for the
work must be provided. Proposed work should not
be the next logical step of previous work, but should
have a high probability of revealing new avenues
of investigation. This program aims to provide pilot
funding that will lead to successful competition for
additional funding beyond the pilot period. The
research concept, scientific team, and explicit plans
for how this work will lead to follow-on funding will be
the primary criteria for judging. These points should
be specifically addressed in the application.
The principal investigator (PI) is responsible for
clearly and explicitly articulating the project’s
innovation and the potential impact on anesthesia
and pain management research.
Eligibility: Faculty level appointment with in the
Department of Anesthesiology
One of the grants will be reserved to support a
beginning scientist (within 5 years of completion
of residency or fellowship) by encouraging and
adequately funding projects that can contribute to
bridging the gap between training and progression to
independent investigator status. The other award(s)
will be used as a seed grant to help investigators with
promising science obtain preliminary data to support
follow-on funding applications.
DREAM Innovation Grant (DIG)
Funding
A maximum of $30,000 will be awarded to each
recipient. None of the funds awarded are to pay for
faculty salary or overhead expenses. The number of
grant recipients and grant amount will be determined
by the DREAM Innovation Grant Committee after all
applications have been received.
Application and Deadline
Applications and questions should be submitted to
David S. Warner, M.D. at david.warner@duke.edu.
A Statement of Intent (Deadline July 16, 2012):
a. Abstract (150 word max)
b. Budget (Budgets should not include salary
support for a faculty, resident, or fellow)
c. NIH formatted Biosketch for PI
2. NIH R03-like Application Format (Hard Deadline
September 7, 2012): i.e., up to 1 page for Specific
Aims and up to 6 pages for the research plan
(background, preliminary data and/or rationale,
experimental plan, description of roles of scientific
team members, timeline for milestones and
completion, and definition of plans to advance work
beyond this funding interval). All pages are to be
single-spaced in 11 point Arial font. Appendices will
not be considered.
Final applications must be submitted in a pdf format
and include the final abstract, budget, biosketches of
key personnel, specific aims, and research plan.
3. Winners will be announced October 14, 2012
during the ASA Alumni Reception.
