New Grant Awarded to Veterans Division
Research Group
Drs. Tom Buchheit,
Andrew Shaw and
Tom Vandeven have
received notice of
award of a $2.9
million Department of
Defense Grant over 4
years to study the role
of epigenetics in the
transition from acute
inflammatory pain to
chronic neuropathic
pain. The grant
entitled “PT110575 -
“Regional Anesthesia
and Valproate Sodium for the Prevention of Chronic Postamputation
Pain” uses a clinical trial, and nested metabolomics, epigenomics and
gene expression analysis to dissect mechanisms that may prevent the
development of chronic pain.
The VA research group will partner with their collaborators at Walter Reed
to run a clinical trial at both the Durham VA and Walter Reed in active duty
and veteran amputee patients. “This is full justification of our decision
to focus on amputation as a model system for understanding persistent
postoperative pain states, and we look forward to expanding our current
amputation pain clinic to handle the increased workload this grant will
bring” said Dr Buchheit.
Dr Shaw noted that this is the second large federal grant the VA group
has been awarded in the past 18 months, and said: “We are delighted to
continue our existing highly successful relationship with DOD, and fully
support their goal-oriented approach to funding important translational
medical research. Understanding how we respond to environmental
trauma and stress is a key component of our research program, and
this award fully cements our group at the cutting edge of inflammatory
epigenomics.”
The award brings the group’s total federal active support to $4.4 million
dollars, and will be conducted in their laboratory in GSRB1, the Duke
Epigenetics and Epigenomics Program (of which all three are faculty
members) the Durham VA and at Walter Reed National Military Medical
Center, in collaboration with Col Chester “Trip” Buckenmaier.
Megan Foureman Wins
1st CRNA Service Award!
Her peer wrote, “Megan Foureman is a
great candidate for the CRNA Service
Award. Megan has distinguished herself
on our staff by taking the leadership role
on the Duke CRNA Global Health Travel
Committee, by becoming the first chair of
the committee and establishing its policies.
She also, on her own accord, traveled to
Haiti and represented the Duke CRNA Department
while providing volunteer anesthesia services at the
Albert Schweitzer Hospital. Megan is a team player
and deserving of this award as she exemplifies what
it means to be a Duke CRNA.”
Presented in July 2012, a $25 donation will be made
in her name to the Duke Children’s Hospital Fund.
Please know that Megan’s peers both nominated
and selected her for this award.
Grant Overview
The DREAM Innovation Grant (DIG) supports
innovative high-risk, and potentially high-reward
investigations to accelerate anesthesia and pain
management research.
Research deemed innovative may introduce a new
paradigm, challenge current paradigms, look at
existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit
other uniquely creative qualities. The DIG promotes
new ideas; therefore, proposals need not include
preliminary data. However, a solid rationale for the
work must be provided. Proposed work should not
be the next logical step of previous work, but should
have a high probability of revealing new avenues
of investigation. This program aims to provide pilot
funding that will lead to successful competition for
additional funding beyond the pilot period. The
research concept, scientific team, and explicit plans
for how this work will lead to follow-on funding will be
the primary criteria for judging. These points should
be specifically addressed in the application.
The principal investigator (PI) is responsible for
clearly and explicitly articulating the project’s
innovation and the potential impact on anesthesia
and pain management research.
Eligibility: Faculty level appointment with in the
Department of Anesthesiology
One of the grants will be reserved to support a
beginning scientist (within 5 years of completion
of residency or fellowship) by encouraging and
adequately funding projects that can contribute to
bridging the gap between training and progression to
independent investigator status. The other award(s)
will be used as a seed grant to help investigators with
promising science obtain preliminary data to support
follow-on funding applications.
by the DREAM Innovation Grant Committee after all
Research Data Security Plans
Part 2 Storage of Electronic Information
When submitting the Research Data Security Plan (RDSP), it is strongly
recommended that electronic files are stored on a departmental server,
not locally on any individual workstation’s hard drive and never on non-
Duke owned computers. Storage on devices other than a server is
expected to have a business justification.
SSNs are never to be stored electronically without the approval of the
Department, CRU, University IT Security Office, Chief Information Officer
and Executive Vice President.
The software product and version that will be used for analysis must be
listed.
Please note that if you use REDCap for data entry and also obtain an
export from REDCap, you should include both the REDCap server
information and the information for where the export will be stored.
Thank you and Farewell from Lauren E. Marcilliat
My husband has recently accepted a position as an attorney at a small
law firm in Sparta, North Carolina, and I will be leaving my position as
Duke Anesthesiology Program Coordinator on August 9th. With legal
jobs at an all time low, we feel incredibly fortunate to have this opportunity.
We are just sorry that we have to leave Duke and Durham to take it! As
many of you know, this was my first job out of college, and I want to thank
all of you for your kindness, patience, and teaching over the past two
years. You made my time here a true pleasure! I plan to keep in touch,
and cannot wait to see what the future has in store for this department.
Leaving the department soon? Let’s keep in touch! Please contact Lauren
Marcilliat at lauren.marcilliat@duke.edu with your new mailing and email address
prior to your departure so that we can add you to our database!
