Handovers Project Funded<br />

Dr. Jeff Taekman was awarded unrestricted medical<br />

education grants totaling $750,000 from Pfizer and<br />

Abbott to support a project focused on improving<br />

clinical handovers. A broad range <strong>of</strong> departmental,<br />

institutional, and extramural collaborators will<br />

work together to improve healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

competence and performance. The simulationbased<br />

initiative features a multi-modal educational<br />

strategy (including the use <strong>of</strong> virtual environments<br />

as well as in-situ observation / coaching). Key<br />

collaborators include Ryan Fink, Noa Segall, Jonathan Mark, and David<br />

Turner (Pediatric Critical Care).<br />

Dream Campaign Fiscal Year 2012 Goal<br />

The DREAM Innovation Grant (DIG) supports innovative<br />

high-risk, and potentially high-reward investigations<br />

to accelerate anesthesia and pain management<br />

research. Our goal is to raise $90,000, which will allow<br />

us to fund three $30K DIG recipients in 2013. The winners<br />

<strong>of</strong> this grant will be announced in October 2012.<br />

The fourth annual AAMC Integrating Quality Meeting has been planned in<br />

partnership with the American Association <strong>of</strong> Colleges <strong>of</strong> Nursing (AACN),<br />

the American Association <strong>of</strong> Colleges <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy (AACP), the American<br />

Dental Education Association (ADEA), the Association <strong>of</strong> Schools <strong>of</strong><br />

Public Health (ASPH), and the Physician Assistant Education Association<br />

(PAEA). This unique program will focus on strategies for implementing<br />

interpr<strong>of</strong>essional and integrative approaches to quality improvement and<br />

patient safety across the continuum <strong>of</strong> health pr<strong>of</strong>essions education and<br />

clinical care in academic health centers.<br />

Abstracts for poster presentations, interactive workshops, and a small<br />

number <strong>of</strong> panel presentations are sought in the following areas:<br />

• Integrating the Academic and Clinical Quality Missions<br />

• Team-Based Interpr<strong>of</strong>essional Approaches to Quality Improvement<br />

• Student and Trainee Initiatives in Quality Improvement and Patient<br />
