Dr. Merel H. Harmel to Receive Honorary<br />
Doctor <strong>of</strong> Science Degree<br />

Dr. Merel H. Harmel will be awarded an<br />
Honorary Doctor <strong>of</strong> Science degree during<br />
the Graduation Ceremony <strong>of</strong> SUNY/<br />
Downstate Medical Center in Carnegie Hall<br />
on the 27th <strong>of</strong> May this year.<br />
In 1952, Dr. Harmel joined the staff <strong>of</strong><br />
SUNY/Downstate Medical Center as<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>Anesthesiology</strong>.<br />
He immediately proceeded to recruit and<br />
train outstanding attending staff members,<br />
and introduced many new and innovative<br />
techniques. Dr. Harmel left SUNY in 1968.<br />
Dr. Harmel joins a sterling group <strong>of</strong> past recipients <strong>of</strong> the Honorary<br />
Doctor <strong>of</strong> Science degree, Clarence Dennis, Louis Hellman, Perrin<br />
Long, William Dock, Chandler Brooks.<br />

Participants in the <strong>Duke</strong> Preceptorship will spend three days in the regional block area, operating rooms and on the floor with post surgery patients observing ultrasound<br />
guided single shot nerve blocks and catheter techniques in a wide variety <strong>of</strong> clinical scenarios. They will learn how to set up the block area for maximum<br />
efficiency in the OR environment, improve their decision making ability and make choices in the performance <strong>of</strong> regional anesthesia. A one-on-one discussion<br />
with the <strong>Duke</strong> Faculty member reviewing cases, scanning techniques and the image library as well as covering handout materials will augment the preceptorship<br />
experience.<br />

Participants in the <strong>Duke</strong> Intraoperative TEE Preceptorship spend one three-day session in the cardiac operating suites, observing techniques <strong>of</strong> intraoperative TEE<br />
and interpretation <strong>of</strong> images. Preceptors will participate in active discussions with cardiothoracic anesthesia faculty and fellows, and learn the basic TEE exam.<br />
They will also learn how to troubleshoot difficult cases and enhance their decision-making skills in the operating room. Cases will be reviewed with fellows and<br />
faculty and images from pathology libraries will be used to augment the preceptorship experience.<br />
