Handovers Project Funded 

Dr. Jeff Taekman was awarded unrestricted medical 

education grants totaling $750,000 from Pfizer and 

Abbott to support a project focused on improving 

clinical handovers. A broad range of departmental, 

institutional, and extramural collaborators will 

work together to improve healthcare professional 

competence and performance. The simulationbased 

initiative features a multi-modal educational 

strategy (including the use of virtual environments 

as well as in-situ observation / coaching). Key 

collaborators include Ryan Fink, Noa Segall, Jonathan Mark, and David 

Turner (Pediatric Critical Care).

Dream Campaign Fiscal Year 2012 Goal 

The DREAM Innovation Grant (DIG) supports innovative 

high-risk, and potentially high-reward investigations 

to accelerate anesthesia and pain management 

research. Our goal is to raise $90,000, which will allow 

us to fund three $30K DIG recipients in 2013. The winners 

of this grant will be announced in October 2012.

2012 State of the School Address

The fourth annual AAMC Integrating Quality Meeting has been planned in 

partnership with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), 

the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), the American 

Dental Education Association (ADEA), the Association of Schools of 

Public Health (ASPH), and the Physician Assistant Education Association 

(PAEA). This unique program will focus on strategies for implementing 

interprofessional and integrative approaches to quality improvement and 

patient safety across the continuum of health professions education and 

clinical care in academic health centers. 

Abstracts for poster presentations, interactive workshops, and a small 

number of panel presentations are sought in the following areas: 

• Integrating the Academic and Clinical Quality Missions 

• Team-Based Interprofessional Approaches to Quality Improvement 

• Student and Trainee Initiatives in Quality Improvement and Patient

Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia Preceptorship Course
