OXIDIZERS<br />

Although CNTs are <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> vital importance in terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir unique properties in<br />

applicati<strong>on</strong> areas today, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir exact growth mechanism is not fully understood. It is<br />

comm<strong>on</strong>ly argued that mild oxidants (CO2, O2 and H2O) play a significant role in CVD<br />

process. In this chapter, an extensive literature search d<strong>on</strong>e in order to investigate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

growth mechanism and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> role <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>oxidizers</str<strong>on</strong>g> during CNT growth is given.<br />

3.1. Importance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Oxidizers <strong>on</strong> Catalyst<br />

Oxidizers keep catalyst particle functi<strong>on</strong>ing in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> growth process by removing<br />

amorphous carb<strong>on</strong> coverage <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m. Moreover, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y can etch away amorphous carb<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> outer walls <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> CNTs. Hence, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y keep catalyst particle functi<strong>on</strong>ing for a l<strong>on</strong>ger<br />

time during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> growth and c<strong>on</strong>sequently increase <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> length, yield and quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> CNTs.<br />

They can also be utilized to c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> size <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> catalyst particle during pretreatment<br />

time. The purpose <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this study was to understand <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> role played by <str<strong>on</strong>g>oxidizers</str<strong>on</strong>g> during<br />

both pretreatment and growth time in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> catalyst size, which c<strong>on</strong>sequently<br />

lead to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> CNT <strong>diameters</strong>.<br />

3.2. Literature Search<br />

The CVD c<strong>on</strong>cept was expanded by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> additi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a growth enhancer into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

growth ambient <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> normal hydrocarb<strong>on</strong> CVD. As a result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d ingredient, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

growth efficiency increased to unprecedented levels (Hata, et al. 2004).<br />

It is generally believed that water vapor cleans and reactivates <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> catalysts by<br />

removing amorphous carb<strong>on</strong> coverage, and as a result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this reactivati<strong>on</strong>, it was seen<br />

that catalyst activity increased in a direct way (Yamada, et al. 2008, Hasegawa and<br />

Noda 2011a, Huang, et al. 2009), using water vapor can promote <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> syn<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>sis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> CNT<br />

forests, prol<strong>on</strong>gs <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> catalyst particle lifetime, prevents <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sintering <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ir<strong>on</strong> particles<br />
